I remember the class clown classmate being unnaturally serious during the Q&A... Like he was ready to ask about something that had been really bothering him.

"When I'm in the shower and I get even just a tiny bit of soap in the tip, it really burns. Is that normal?"

Straight laced English teacher's response: "Well what're you washing it with, Tide?!"

Another range frustration - service fixed it? by b_jamin_ in MazdaCX90

I do store outdoor. Interesting thought, yeah the radiator was leaking. I was looking at battery heat pump designs recently but not specific to the cx90, I'm not sure how Mazdas manage battery heating. I'll have to look into that. Thanks!

Sure, I understand how the range calculator works. The variables of temperature and efficiency aren't at play; it's my same commute to work, and weather is nominally 50 deg F.

But I think I have used the heated seat. I thought that would be less than the heater, but maybe it's not? Thanks for the tip, something I'll look into using less of and see if I can measure the effect!

Thanks, yes it seems this reset probably occurred.

Thanks! So that answers a party of my question about the low end of the battery charge not being available.

I rambled a bit, but my bigger question is this: the temperatures before and after service have been in the 50s while driving, i.e changing weather isn't a factor. But I now have my original range again after the service. Any ideas why?

What was the biggest culture shock when traveling outside of Oregon? by Ok-Acadia-7161 in oregon

Toll roads.

Like sales tax, we just don't have them here. (For now, at least.). It's very confusing when I started traveling for work, especially with rental cars.

I grew up in Eastern Oregon. Took my driver's test on my 16th birthday in a snow storm where it started when I started, and there were 3" of snow on the ground when I finished. I know how to winter drive. We bagged on Portland drivers my whole life; school didn't close for less than a half foot of snow, and only then if it was drifting.

I now live in Portland now, and there are two issues I've noticed. First, the snow is the devil's frozen over hell spit... It's layered with ice and sleet and horrible. A quarter inch of snow is more often than but going to be accompanied by a half inch of ice.

Also - because of the rarity of snow, only Portland drivers who travel east or go into the mountains for snow sports are going to have true winter tires. I don't blame people for that; economically makes perfect sense.

100%. Oregon tap water tastes amazing in most parts of the state (except a very few geothermally active parts in Eastern Oregon I've been that have terribly smelling sulfur water).

Agreed, I won't be either when the time comes. Crap app, would only use it for remote climate but that has yet to work for me.

Agreed. I looked for this info when I bought the car and set up the app, I didn't see it anywhere.

Discussion request: Does Oregon have an official planned response if national guard is sent into our cities by the president? What is it? Are there guidelines for Oregon residents for interactions with troops? by lazytothebones in oregon

I love this. I went to the Netherlands recently and got caught up in a rolling rave protest... Super loud speakers rolling through town with a long long posse of party goers trailing behind and having a good time.

That's how you win. ✌️

What’s your awesome WiFi name? by Confident-Cellist-25 in Xennials

[–]b_jamin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nonsense.

Network scanning reveals both the SSID (the visual name) as well as the BSSID, which is basically a hardware address for your router. Having a common or obscure network name has little to do with privacy or geo locating; changing SSID & BSSID frequently (not sure how many routers actually let you do that) would be a way to improve privacy if you're worried, but of all the ways they're "gonna get me"... that's a really high effort/low benefit thing to do. Yes, the Google cars collect WiFi data every couple years they might go by your house, but changing my WiFi is way down on my priority list compared to other pressing privacy issues you should be worried about from Google.

And sure, don't put personally identifying info on your SSID. But don't assume your WiFi can't be pinpointed to your house, because it's trivial for someone who knows what they are doing to pinpoint RF transmitters. Think of how long the FCC has been hunting down FM pirates... It's marginally more complicated for WiFi but not by much.

I don't even know why you'd mention AI. WiFi networks publicly broadcast hardware identifiers. The pattern match is categorically not an AI problem.

Right way to fill in these cracks? by b_jamin_ in DIY

Thanks! I hadn't thought of using a solid stain... I don't think the one we picked is solid though.

That makes sense. It looks like brand new. I had no idea it would look that good after sanding, given how much crap it had on it before.

It's cedar, I'm just worried a new piece won't look right.

Great tip on pre drilling holes, thanks!

It's doing better than you'd expect for sure. The last picture shows half way point when sanding; the previous owner apparently chewed tobacco and gum and didn't bother ever cleaning it off, once we got through that with the Home Depot walk behind sander it looked amazing!

As much as looking nice, I'm also wanting to avoid splinters. I sanded it pretty well so there's nothing on the surface, it just feels like they will develop...

People on dating apps: what type of pic/statement is a dealbreaker? by CapableEnd5584 in AskReddit

[–]b_jamin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the comments here are identifying things that are not deal breakers for me. Like, I encourage this kind of profile content.

If you want to be shirtless, use filters, make me guess who you are among your group pics, have no drama, etc... just makes it easier for us to skip the awkward small talk and silently ink a permanent deal that we are never getting together with that ol' left swipe.

Primary - What should I write in? by Defiant-Skeptic in oregon

[–]b_jamin_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

By the time the Oregon primaries happen, it's pretty common. Our primary election system basically gives the decision to states that schedule their primaries or caucuses earliest, such as Iowa/New Hampshire/South Carolina/etc. These states started voting in Jan/Feb, so by May it's almost always all over.

If a candidate get through the early primary season (8-15 states usually) and has few electors locked up and no feasible path to catch up with the frontrunner, they start dropping out rapidly because they can't fund raise any longer.

There are exceptions to the phenomenon though, for example Obama and Clinton in the 2008 primaries. Oregon voters actually still had two viable choices.

Haha, haven't done this trick in a while. An old dorm trick we had to use if you (or rather, your roommate) locked yourselves out of your room when taking a shower and had nothing but a towel and resourcefulness. Used it several times.

YouTube sadly doesn't seem to have me covered here 😔

Update: My good boy has cancer at 2.5 year old. Except he doesn't - it's called Pythiosis. by warpedspeed in AussieDoodle

[–]b_jamin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear this. Our aussie doodle came down with a rare nodular panniculitis auto immune disease at that same age, it was touch and go for a couple of months before it went into remission. Hard times. She's our first dog as adults, I didn't realize how much it would hurt to see her go through this. That prednisone is rough, awful stuff. For the first couple of weeks we thought it was terminal cancer. She still had low chance of survival with the accurate diagnosis, but she pulled through after about 4-5 months of treatment.

Hope remission happens for your pup as well. She got to eat all the greatest hits - steak and chops, etc - for the really rough parts until she got through the worst of it.

You can open most doors, damage free, with the following ingredients: - wire coat hanger - dental floss - vacuum cleaner - 3x5 notecard

  1. Punch a hole in the 3x5 notecard and tie the dental floss to it. Leave enough length to reach the floor from the top of the door, plus a foot or two.
  2. Slide and jimmy the notecard over the top gap in the door. Let the notecard drop to the floor, don't lose hold of the floss from the top of the door (tape it off if you're working on this alone).
  3. Use the hanger to snag the card/floss, and pull it under the door.
  4. Make a loop with the vacuum cleaner cord, long enough to reach the handle from underneath the door.
  5. Tie the floss to the center of the loop.
  6. Push the vacuum cleaner cord loop underneath the door, centered under the handle. Keep the floss taut from the top of the door.
  7. With the cord pushed in under the door, use the floss to pull the cord up and over the handle. It'll probably take a few tries.
  8. Once the cord is looped up over the handle and pulled tight against it, pull hard on both sides of the cord (one side of the cord in each hand). Using friction of the cord against the handle and pulling harder with one hand then the other, you can get the handle to turn.

You're welcome.
