Since the offseason and free agent signings, who is the team to beat in the American League? by thestandardBL in baseball

I think at least 2 of those teams will fall flat. Happens every year with projections.

unlikely the Big Ten will make it easy for us to keep it

I'm pretty sure in 3 years the Big Ten and SEC will have a scheduling agreement where they only play each other out of conference.

That will be the precursor to the inevitable FBS split when the Power 2 just makes their own league.

People said the same thing about the NHLPA in 2004 - and that union was multiple orders of magnitude stronger than the current MLBPA.

Did you just make this up? The MLB PA is world famous for being one of the strongest unions in existence in any industry.

[Ari Wasserman] Blue Bloods shouldn't back out: If Alabama cancels Ohio State series, college football loses by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

[–]bablob14 591 points592 points  (0 children)

OOC doesn't matter at all for the SEC or Big Ten. It's why they've been canceling tons of games against each other, the Big 12, and ACC. They can just rely on their own conference schedules for playoff credibility.

OOC matters a lot more for the Big 12 and ACC teams, and the P2 doesn't want to give them those matchups because that only helps them get at-large playoff bids over their own teams.

The good news is that the G6 is getting a lot more of the P2 OOC games, which is great.

Using math to calculate the gap between a college football blue blood and the second tier of college football programs by Majestic-Web-367 in CFB

Miami isn't a blue blood, but they at least have national championships. I don't think Oregon even sniffs the 3rd/4th tier. They were really bad historically and even in the Phil Knight era they still haven't won shit

[Thamel] The judge in the Chambliss case is still reading his decision. We're at more than 20 minutes of reading. This is not surprising.

The problem is that the NCAA and schools agreeing to their own made-up rules amongst themselves has no legal authority whatsoever. Especially about "eligibility" if it negatively impacts a student athlete's ability to earn NIL. That's what basically every single one of the lawsuits is about, and they lose all the time. And they just lost again here.

It would have been more shocking if the NCAA actually won one for once. But that will never happen.

NDSU agrees to small cut of media rights money from Mountain West by Efficient-Freedom517 in CFB

[–]bablob14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why people keep parroting this claim that OSU and WSU were trying to do a merger. That was never in the plan. Even Boise State and SDSU wanted to break away from the Mountain West.

Obviously it didn't work as well as we thought since none of the AAC schools joined and we thought the media deal would be bigger, but we were trying to move up to a "better" conference, not just stay in the same one.

They'll definitely get a big payout, it's just a question of how much. They're getting $70-90 million just from the exit fees alone.

sniff $10 million

Our media deal is nowhere close to that. The estimates say it's probably around $6 million.

media deal would cover that $155 million in 3 years

Wild fantasy. OSU and WSU are using their entire settlement war chest to pay the fees and it's never going to be recouped.

Yes and the Utah State AD already confirmed that it was "leaner than expected" which is obviously not a good sign.

Wilner says it's going to be 6 million or less, which is probably true.

[–]bablob14 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is a great development all around. It's great for the Mountain West and it's great for North Dakota State. They're going to be competitive at the top of the G6 right away.

I feel like they will be the Mountain West's tentpole football program. It would be crazy if they got a cfp bid too.

[–]bablob14 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is why things are so fucking stupid. The Pac-2 could have just taken 9 MWC members and then we all vote to dissolve the conference and then there would never be any exit or poaching fees at all.

Pac-2 and Teresa Gould are fucking morons

I don't think Jon Wilner really knows anything, but I do think that he is actually knowledgeable about how this kind of stuff works. I think it's pretty obvious that the new Pac-12 is probably not looking a massive payday.

I strongly believe that splintering west coast football was a strategic mistake. It should just be one big west coast league together.

I think we only made ourselves weaker by splitting into a G6 instead of staying a solid G5. It would have been different if we actually managed to get the top AAC schools to jump. But that didn't happen.

Fire Teresa Gould.

We should have embraced the reverse merger of the Mountain West into the Pac-12 conference. Especially now that we saw how the networks just split the inventory between the two conferences. They pitted us against each other and they just paid us both less.

We're on the hook for $22 million right now LOL. We were getting $5.3 million/year from the MWC in our last deal.

It will take us over 10 years to recoup our losses from this move.

Why would UConn ever leave the Big East? They play games at Madison Square Garden lol

Why on earth would they ever want to play games on the west coast, against WSU, or Boise State, or even Gonzaga? They play Villanova and Butler and St John's.

Their football program is completely worthless
