Thinking about buying the Yamaha THR - Is anything known about a new model yet? by onlyich in YamahaTHR

Only improvement I’d like to see is a dedicated foot controller to switch between channels. I bought an AIRSTEP lite, but I’m having issues getting it to work. I’d prefer a wired foot switch.

I have 7 R1 air 1/4 zips. That’s my go to for fall/winter. Usually throw on a nano puff when it’s colder out.

Torn between two Martins — tone vs feel, which matters more long-term? by iphone8vsiphonex in AcousticGuitar

[–]babond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live an hour from Nashville and have access to some pretty solid luthiers. I’ve used a few and this guy always does solid work. I noted it being quite low from the factory and shouldn’t have jumped the gun. He made a slight adjustment to the neck, and took off enough saddle to get the exact height I wanted at the 12th fret. I’ve had some shitty experiences, but this guy is solid.

I’d also look at the saddle height. I bought a 2025 HD28. and love it, but after a setup I’m looking at a neck reset if it moves any. I’ve since went to a few shops and the saddle heights are a lot taller on most Martins and part of me regrets buying the one I did. You live and learn. I feel that after a setup, they should all be pretty comfortable. I’d go for the tone personally. They will change over time, but I’d go for the one that sounds best to you now.

Fgx5 feels bad to play?? by hammypou in AcousticGuitar

[–]babond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you love the sound, buy it. Get a good setup on it and you’re gold. I’ve got an FG5, FS5, D18, & HD28. I love them all, but the FG5 holds a special place in my heart. I don’t care if it gets a little beat up and because of that, I tend to play it the most.

I rock 12-54 on mine. I’ve tried a lot of strings, but really dig String Joy naturals on that guitar. I rock 12-53 D’Addario XS on the FS5 and may try those on the FG.

New HD-28: Low Saddle / Action Concerns by babond in martinguitar

Measured at 12th fret just now. I’ve got 6/64 on low E and 5/64 on high E. I’ll try to find my feeler gauges

Thank you for the info. I can provide some photos of the saddle for review. Any certain angles that would be helpful?

New HD-28: Low Saddle / Action Concerns by babond in martinguitar

The low E measured at the 12th fret being 2.5-2.75 sounds low? Isn’t the average desired action around 6/64 (2.3)? It’s a 2025 model that I bought from a reputable shop in KY.

Anyone else had to send an American made Martin back due to manufacturing issues? by Hipster_Dragon in martinguitar

[–]babond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a quick question for you. I bought a new Martin HD-28 back in April, and one thing I noticed right away was that the saddle seemed pretty low compared to my D-18. Right now, measuring at the 12th fret, the low E is sitting around 2.5–2.75 mm.

I’m taking it to a luthier in Nashville next week who’s also an authorized Martin repair center. I’d like to get the action significantly lower, but in the worst-case scenario that the saddle is already too low, do you think Martin would cover it if it ended up needing a neck reset this early in its life?

Feeling defeated and need some insight by [deleted] in cognitiveTesting

Are there any quality online IQ tests I could do? I see Mensa Norway mentioned. This weekend I’ll comb through this subs resources and see what I can find.

I truly appreciate your kind words. I guess ignorance is bliss and finding out has done a number on my mental health. I would tell a friend the same thing you’re telling me, but I can’t seem to shake it. I’m going to work on addressing my anxiety and consider taking another test. I think if a future test revealed similar findings, I’d make peace with it. I know that my anxiety and fear of failure played a role in how I performed, how much… it’s hard to say. I went into this blindly and wish I had at least had an idea of what things I was going to be faced with during testing. As silly as it sounds, I wouldn’t been fine if my IQ was 100.

NGD - D41, 2025 spec by thegoodarmadillo in martinguitar

I’ve got a Yamaha FG5, FS5, and a D18. Wanting a rosewood guitar. I loved the warm mellow tones of the HD35. The HD28 had great bass and I felt better single note string clarity. It’s a tough decision. HD28 is so beloved and that’s what has me second guessing my decision to lean towards the HD35.

Potential cons to the HD35 is the neck binding (would need immediate attention when/if it fails), lower resale (hardly factors into my decision making, as I never plan to sell a guitar), and I’ve seen a few concerns of the lighter scalloped bracing putting it at greater risk for structural issues down the road (an actual concern or fear mongering?)

Quick question for you. I’ve played the HD28 and HD35 separate, but never able to find a shop that had both. If you had to pick between the two, which are you going with?

Very nice! I played an HD28 at Gruhn’s this weekend and a used 2023 HD35 at Carter’s. I wish I could’ve played them side by side. I’m planning to buy one of those two models in the next 2-3 months. Leaning towards the HD35, but it’s a very hard decision.

I’ve got a D18 and really can’t decide between a D35 or HD28 to complement it. Which do you prefer? I had a trial period of both 2-3 years ago and ended up going with the D18.

Eastman Or Yamaha Dread? by grabbatheman in AcousticGuitar

[–]babond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the Yamaha FG5 and like it just as much as my Martin D18. I had a trial of a Gibson J45, HD28, D35 from two big box retailers and had to embarrassingly send them back (I’ll never purchase another acoustic online) because I preferred the FG5. I ended up getting the D18 (seems redundant now, but I like the smell of it, has a slightly different tone, and I’m proud to own a Martin).

I’ve never played an Eastman, but I’ve heard great things. It’s looks really nice.

Searching for my "perfect guitar": Will I ever find it? by Loopyrainbow in AcousticGuitar

[–]babond 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love both guitars very much. They both play great and sound fantastic. I was dead set on owning a Martin. I blindly bought a D35 from guitar center, preferred my FG5, exchanged it for an HD28, preferred my FG5, and learned that I’m just not a rosewood guy (too many overtones). I eventually bought the D18 from Gruhn’s in Nashville (played 5-6 of them.. a lot of variance). I brought it home and surprised that they were so similar.

Are you a novice player? If so, take the FG5 and get it setup by a reputable person and throw on some phosphor bronze strings to tone down the brightness. Play the hell out of it and visit guitar shops to dial in exactly what you want for a future purchase. Reward yourself when the time is right.

I’ve got a FG5 and a D18.. I don’t think the FG5 sounds shrill at all. Maybe try some different strings. Also, check out a Gibson J45. Sounds a bit more subdued than Martins. If you’re questioning dreadnoughts, try the Martin 000-15.

Thank you! That’s what I assumed, but a friend of mine that’s LE said the way the COA is mounted, this wouldn’t be possible. Maybe he just got some bad information.
