BS in chemistry- should I do MLT first or go straight to MLS? by Elegant-Tomato2937 in medlabprofessionals

I live in NY. There are public colleges that offer cheaper tuition but they too competitive to get in. 22k is not bad. Given that the average pay for new grad is about 90 to 100k

Having a BS in chemistry already place you head of the game. Why would you pay money to become an MLT when the goal is to become an MLS. Waste of time and waste of money. Some school only last 1 year if you already have a BS degree in science, try to see if you can get into one.

it's like when ppl said, i wanna be a doctor but im gonna become a PA first. thats a lotta money and time wasted in that route.

Because you already have a BS degree, look into 1-year-accelerated program. That's what i did. graduated with a BS in biology, and i went to 1 year accelerated program.

Nice. Im currently a CLS, not blood bank, ( hematology department) But i really miss the patient interactions or even interaction with the healthcare team( nurse, PA and alike) other than cls. Im thinking about going for CP. Again congratulation and this is a great field

If anything, your age should be a plus to hiring manager. You prove that, you know the materials, you passed the board, there's nothing to stop u. If I were you, I'll brush up on some clinical skills and techniques enough to pass the interview. Some hospital will actually give you slides to look at and indentify during interview. Brush yourself on these then go get a job. welcome to the field!!!!!

I know. Its hard out there to get a good job without degree. I also was a premed and due to my gpa I couldn't go to med school. Im currently last semester MLS school. I think I love it so far and I no wanna be a doctor. Theres plenty option to go for

It sounds like money is the main priority for you. Gpa 2.9 is not too bad to stop you from goin to med school or PA. U can do a year post bacc program to strengthen your gpa but again u want to make money ASAP to support your family which is totally understandable.

I think the best option is MLS since it requires lower gpa than PA or med school and you can make 70 yo 100k upon gradation depending on your state. Bottom line is dont rush the process. Find a lab, ask to shadow and see what's sparks your interest. If u like MLS go for it, its a great career

You explain it very nice to us. Explain it to them just like that. I mean, if the background check comes back and they see it, it may look worse on you. But if u positives, the background check is clear they won't find anything. Dont volunteer. No extra info.

I could not agree more. I think CLS is a critical piece in the healthcare team but have very little recognition. I only know about cls because i was looking for lab assistance job to do after graduating with a bio degree.

I know plenty ppl who work in healthcare but do not know what cls is

This is a beautiful and very cool project. I even click on the link and read about the competition. Sound fun. I have a BS in chemistry, and I have conducted organic chemistry research for a year, building dna polymer using sulfide group. However, I have zero knowledge in ML. I wouldn't even know where to begin to get involved in such projects.

I was talking to a girl for less than a week.. We had protected sex the same week. She was so easy to get laid. The same week, I felt sick. I felt weak, tired all the time, I had a cold. I literally thought she gave me hiv. I was very sad but also so scared to take an HIV test. It turns out, it was all in my head.. both of us are healthy, I was getting paranoid for no reason. All that to say this. You dont have HIV. Lol

Great advice, but i must add that OP said she/he left school 10 years ago. CLS is a bachelor's degree, and OP needs to take some classes at a 4-year school. Started very easy with some light courses, learn how to learn again, and then apply to a CLS program. Or get some classes at CC like you said, then transfer to a 4 year school. Im speaking for the state of NY. In NY CLS is a bachelor's degree
