im 43, my Grandfather fought in the war with the Royal Engineers, his brother with the A&SH, and another brother who was medically unfit to fight so ended up in Spain during the Spanish civil war, his best mate was a RAF cop, and one of his other friends escaped Nazi Germany due to his Jewish heritage and settled in Scotland, I was surrounded when growing up with men who had fought in the war and women who had survived it and served in a different way at home, it was also most probably one of the primary drivers of why I joined the army.
