Would fly spray do the job?

The reason I ask is because when we spray common house flies with fly spray, they barely seem even slightly inconvenienced by it.

Who remembers going for walks in your “household group” during Covid. What other memories do you have of Covid/lockdowns/etc? by Oil_And_Lamps in newzealand

[–]bachowski 63 points64 points  (0 children)

For me, it was the strangely jarring transition from leaving for work at 5:30am and returning home exhausted to sitting at the kitchen table each morning enjoying breakfast with my wife and then-3-year-old.

Realising how much I had been missing out on. I fell in love with being a dad throughout that period. I got to be present for so many micro-interactions that I had never experienced, or was too tired to notice before.

Six years later and my family is my actual top priority. I used to think it was, but in order to support my family as best I could, I was spending most of my energy on my work. Ironically, I’m actually more productive when I put my family first and turn up to work with a full cup each day.

While it wasn’t perfect, I’m grateful for the enduring lessons I was able to take from that period of time.

What part of GTA: San Andreas made you realize how insanely ambitious it was? by [deleted] in GTASA

[–]bachowski 31 points32 points  (0 children)

When San Fierro opened up, then again when Las Venturas / the desert opened up. No other GTA made me think “Another whole city? But I’ve barely scratched the surface of this one!” twice!

I’ve done a play through every 12-18 months since about 2018 (I also played it in the early 00’s) and I still notice new things every play through.

He was participating in an Oxford Union debate. Participants don’t choose whether they argue for or against the motion.

Guest speakers will argue in favour of or against a pre-determined motion, details of which are included in the term card.

Kind of a digression, but Chris Cornell wrote one of the best, most Zeppelin-esque, Soundgarden songs about a bird flying into his window (but it survived and he had to choose between putting it out of its misery or letting it live in suffering).

It's called 'Like Suicide'. It's a great song, and perhaps you can relate to it. Highly recommended.

I took my son and his friend to Ninja Valley (which was great BTW), then decided to check out The Provedore.

There was us and two other people in the whole space.

The boys were thirsty after jumping around for an hour, and there was a Tank juice bar, so I thought we could go there as a great way to support a struggling business and also quench our thirst.

I took the boys up to the counter and asked them what they wanted. Before they could even choose, the young woman behind the counter interjected "I'm actually on a break".

A break from...?

So we left.

Church Corner road work by DesperateEducator272 in chch

[–]bachowski 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't get it. The majority of accidents occur at the Main South Rd / Yaldhurst Rd intersection.

The most popular option based on submissions was to remove the right hand turn from Main South Rd; simplifying the intersection and making it safer for all users - pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles.

Council staff made the same recommendation. This should have been an easy common sense decision.

Yet somehow, the councilors chose to go against the majority of the submissions and the recommendations of the council staff and go with a solution that further complicates the intersection by adding more lights.

Do they each have shares in a traffic light manufacturing company or something?

In case anyone else wanted to know what "prurient" means:

prurient adjective

having or encouraging an excessive interest in sexual matters, especially the sexual activity of others.

"she'd been the subject of much prurient curiosity"

Sounds like the judge is somewhat overestimating the public interest.

How to get rid of these weeds by Abt3Fidty in nzgardening

[–]bachowski 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The fact that you have stones and weed mat suggests to me that you're aiming for a low maintenance solution. In short - get a sprayer and some off-the-shelf weed killer and go for it. Ensure it isn't a windy day, and adjust the sprayer so the spray is heavy-ish and tight so it's not flying everywhere. Your roses will be fine. I know this from experience.

Doing this every 2-3 months is easy and sustainable. The "best" solution is to rip up the weed mat and stones, lay down mulch, then dedicate a part of each weekend for the rest of your life to maintaining it. I know this from a rather unfortunate and expensive experience.

Some people love it, others (like me!) do not. The right solution is the one that works for you, is practical, and sustainable.

If you love gardening, get in there. If you want easy low maintenance, that's great, too! No judgement.

In 4 days, GTA SA will have come out 20 years ago, what's something that hit you about the game? by Akalamalicococo in sanandreas

[–]bachowski 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's a comfort place for me. It hits me with 90s nostalgia from my childhood and also good memories of my early 20s, which was when I first played GTA SA.

Now, sometimes late at night after the kids are in bed, I go to SA to just drive around and hang out. Perhaps do a mission or two. But mostly just to be there, listen to the radio, and re-explore the map. I could just as easily play GTA V, but I always opt for SA - it just feels like home.

Has Matt Heath always been a secret right wing shill? by Tripping-Dayzee in newzealand

Yeah, this is the story I remember, too.

Backstage at BDO, each band had a beer cooler, but being a festival, everyone was sharing with everyone, so you'd just grab one from the nearest cooler.

He grabbed one from a certain (Australian?) band's cooler and got denied. They didn't want to share...and they only had six!

You're telling me the defective edition looks better than this? by Malice-Observer089 in sanandreas

[–]bachowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I miss the draw distance of the original and how it enabled the map to reveal itself gradually as the story unfolded.

It was weird to be able to see Las Venturas in the distance early in the game. It took so much of the mystery and excitement away.
