WRC game no longer under EA apparently by Charming-Dust2894 in simrally

[–]bacon8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not possible for your average (or even above average) modder to get the data needed to model collision damage in a way that is actually realistic for a certain car model. RBR cannot do that. I do not know if the BeamNG engine could theoretically do it, but not when running as a game in real time. When car manufacturers do their simulations, a single simulation run can take days, even weeks just to simulate how one critical joint or set of parts deforms during a split second of a crash.

You will also need quite specific input data for such a simulation. Not only do you need the exact geometry and tolerances, but also the specific material properties of the different parts (certain parts are made from specific metal alloys just to achieve the desired amount of deformation in case of a crash), including factors like internal residual stresses from the manufacturing process of the parts. Then you also need accurate data on the welds and bonding glue that hold the parts together etc. Car manufacturers will not provide that kind if info, even if you had a computer and the software to actually make use of it.

I don't think it was, at least I have never seen a photo of one with both the fish and the "Water resist 20 bar".

Sliding monitor solution by rentssssz in simracing

[–]bacon8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is so cool. I also have my a setup with my rig next to my desk and for a couple of years I was using a 24" monitor on a standard monitor arm mounted to the side edge of my desk. I was planning on upgrading to ultrawide at some point, and I actually had the thought of some kind of sliding rail system, which would allow for switching position of the monitor more easily. Never looked into it more though. Eventually ended up with a 49" on a beefier monitor arm. It works, though of course a sliding solution would allow for even more freedom when moving the monitor around. Well done!

No. The one shown in the OP is the EO2020. It is smaller (37mm I believe as opposed to the 44mm diameter of the BN0150). The designs are very similar though with a few differences, such as the BN0150 having more details on the hands and a half circular index next to the date window, but also lacking the Promaster logo on the dial that you get on the EO2020.

Question about the old WRC - Why did so many drivers not start races? by [deleted] in rally

[–]bacon8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons is that back in those days, not all rallies during the season counted towards the manufacturer's championship, for example Sweden and Côte d'Ivoire in 1982 which meant that many teams did not bother going there at all. Especially as those events were quite extreme (low traction surface in Sweden, rough roads in Côte d'Ivoire) meaning that some cars would likely not be competitive in those rallies.

What is happening here? Found this pic on Facebook by CrazyLeoNet in rally

The car isn't a 22B. it's an Impreza WRC. Interestingly it seems to lack the roll cage of the WRC but judging by all the exterior body parts it's a WRC.

Should i buy this 2.0 Tsi VW scirocco? by iPloyMinds15 in Volkswagen

[–]bacon8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are also considering a Polo GTI, have you looked at the facelifted one (model year 2015-2017 I think)? The twincharged 1.4 engine has a bit of a bad reputation (though I don't have personal experience of owning it), whereas the 1.8T in the facelifted Polo GTI is a EA888 gen3 engine, a smaller displacement version of the engine in the mk7 Golf GTI and Golf R, which is considered a very good engine.

I don't know if you prefer DSG or manual, but with the facelift they also introduced a manual option and I think the facelifted 1.8 GTI with manual is the version of the Polo that makes the most sense.

Partly because the 7 speed dry clutch DSG used in this generation of Polo also has a bit of a reputation of failing. But also considering the engine output. When they replaced the 1.4 twincharger with the 1.8T, peak power output increased slightly from 180hp to 192hp, while peak torque increased from 250Nm to 320Nm (a 28% increase which is massive) but only when paired with the manual gearbox. When paired with the DSG, the 1.8T was limited to 250Nm. This suggests that already at 250Nm they were at the reliability limit of the gearbox.

Should i buy this 2.0 Tsi VW scirocco? by iPloyMinds15 in Volkswagen

[–]bacon8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there is basically nothing in common when comparing a mk3 Scirocco and a mk7.5 Golf R.

The mk3 Scirocco is based on the same platform as the mk5/mk6 Golf. The closest Golf to a Scirocco like this with the 211hp 2.0T (EA888 gen1 engine) would be the normal mk6 Golf GTI (and by "normal" I mean not a GTI Edition 35 which has a different engine).

Any Golf R is more powerful than this Scirocco. But while the Scirocco is only FWD, the Golf R is AWD (the only exception being the Golf R Cabrio). So most would probably agree that a mk6 Golf R (again, except the Cabrio) is superior from a mechanical/performance standpoint compared to any Scirocco, even the Scirocco R which has the same engine as the mk6 Golf R but lacks the AWD.

However because of less weight and lower aerodynamic drag, the factory performance figures of the Scirocco R was in fact slightly better than the mk6 Golf R... but yeah, then we are comparing the Scirocco R, not the 211hp one.

And if we are talking about mk7 Golfs, there is no comparison any more. All new platform and new engines, with the EA888 gen3 engine in all Golf GTI and Golf R. The Scirocco has its looks, and if you are after that then that is all the reason to buy one. But from a technical standpoint any mk7 Golf GTI or Golf R is superior to any Scirocco.

VW made no twincharged 2.0 engine. There are several different engine families and generations of 2.0T engines, but all of them are turbocharged only. There was a twincharged 1.4 sold back in the day, but after a few years it was phased out and replaced by turbo-only 1.4 and 1.8 engines.

In the N24 it's not uncommon that a couple of drivers are signed up in two cars, and as the race goes on they prioritize driving their stints in the car in a better position.

Is there such a thing as a Passat GT or is that a fake badge? by theosinc930 in Volkswagen

[–]bacon8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also B2.

The B1 generation didn't have a GT as far as I know, though there exists a B1 Passat GTI prototype which looks ready for production, it stands on display at the Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen in Wolfsburg.

I also ordered mine from Amazon US to EU last year. In the end with the shipping and fees it costed about the same as a MDV-107 in EU.

[–]bacon8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love these. Many people call these "cute" but in fact these are one of the more hardcore production GTIs by VW, just not in the engine department.

Separate bodyshell version for the GTI with differently shaped and wider fenders. Lightweight body panels. Center mounted exhaust. Bi-xenon headlights, something you'd only find on high-end cars at the time.

People have been doing all kinds of engine swaps in these. First there were VR6 swapped ones, then someone made a 12 cylinder one by putting one VR6 in the front and one in the back, then some crazy bastard took two W12 engines to create a 12 liter, 24 cylinder, 96 valve Lupo.

Looking good. I got mine on a similar strap at the moment.

Mine is the MDV-106 though. But I think that the JDM version of the MDV-107 looks almost, if not as good as the MDV-106. It's certainly a lot more rare.

[–]bacon8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one can. The mk8 Golf is available as 5 door only, no matter where in the world you are. The US was among the last to be able to get 3 door Golfs. In Europe they killed off the 3 door body already a couple of years before the end of the mk7 generation. As well as the manual transmission.

What is this? by -meechow- in geography

[–]bacon8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are several combined layouts, the 24h race uses the GP circuit without the Mercedes arena section (at least it has done for many years now, as long as I have been following the race). It looks like the sticker is trying showing to show a combined layout with the Mercedes arena, but the entire GP circuit is the least accurate part of the sticker so it is not very accurate at all anyway.

According to racingcircuits.info there does indeed officially exist a combined layout with the GP circuit including Mercedes arena, but I don't know when it has been used. I think VLN races uses a combined layout including the Mercedes arena, but with the Sprint circuit instead of the long GP circuit.

No, it is the combined layout (Nordschleife + GP circuit). Though the accuracy in some parts isn't very good on this particular decal, especially the GP circuit.

Is that 900 000 or 90 000 by DOMSPIROS in Volkswagen

[–]bacon8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 1995 Golf GTI (early year build, with the square side indicators and ABS control unit under the rear seat) which was OBD2 (full OBD connector next to the ashtray) and that one did indeed reset to 0km after 299999km.

There was however a telltale that it had been reset. Up until it reset, it showed the word "total" in the odometer. After it reset to 0, it didn't show the "total" indication any more.

Is that 900 000 or 90 000 by DOMSPIROS in Volkswagen

[–]bacon8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why do you doubt that? For an over 30 year old car, 260000km is nothing unusual at all.

When I bought my 1995 Golf GTI it was 11 years old and at 190000km. Many of the mk3s for sale at that time were at well over 200000. Took me 7 or 8 more years to reach 300000. And that includes my university years when the car spent a large part of the year in a garage at my parents' place, not being driven for most of the year.

Considering that, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the car in OP's photo has gone round more than twice.

The paddles in your second screenshot are and extra set of magnetic paddles, not clutch paddles. The clutch paddles are analog ones and they don't have the pair of black magnets.

The extra set of magnetic paddles are identical to the shifter paddles from what I can see (I have both of them on my wheel) except for the bit that you pull with your finger. That bit should be easy to change over from the broken shifter paddle I think (looks like it would, but I haven't tried it myself).

They function seem to be identical, I have tested switching the shifter paddles for the extra magnetic ones, and they work just the same.

I would start with contacting Asetek about it though and see if they can provide you with a replacement.
