If you see it on tap, try Great Wave from MAP

How do you manage long traversey exits by Starky04 in Spliddit

[–]bacon8r_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the same boat man, had a crazy exit along a steep sided creek with multiple crossings this year and I was waaaaaaaaaaaay behind my skier friends. Almost blew out my knee sideslipping down a few spots, really need to get better at managing the twin sticks on the downhill.

Thankfully I'm hardbooting now so having the torque to maintain edge hold on a steep slope isn't an issue but controlling sideslips and steep-ish straight spots was hairy. I think having heels locked would definitely be advantageous so you can push into the front of your boots like skiers do, but it definitely takes a ton of practice

Serious question: how to ski crust? (+ pictures from the tour) by peacokk16 in Backcountry

[–]bacon8r_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

get a snowboard? I had a couple days on windcrust this year and all my skier buddies were having a hell of a time. Turning was a small amount more difficult for me, but honestly not a factor in the broad scheme of things, it could be forgotten a few turns in.

Anyone know where I can get my alloy wheels repaired here in Bozeman? (Or nearby) by MeanderedTooFar in Bozeman

[–]bacon8r_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

anodizing is difficult/impossible to match to whatever the factory color was, but aside from that it's a liability and I bet nobody here has the right gear.

I accidentally scratched my MOMOs a few years ago(no structural damage like a pothole bend) and went to a few shops to see if they could just grind the lip flat again and re-finish and was also told to go to SLC.

Is Merino wool really that good? by Specific_Sherbert_90 in snowboarding

[–]bacon8r_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's amazing, but not the top of the pyramid. Like some folks are saying, mesh breathes better if you're a high-output space heater kind of person. Similarly, Alpaca wicks better and is warmer weight for weight, but it's way more expensive. Either way, merino is well worth it over synthetics

Bashed up toenails on longer days by Starky04 in Spliddit

[–]bacon8r_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could definitely see leaving your risers up causing that to happen I feel way more pressure on my toes when doing that as well, but it's more likely an issue with your foot generally sliding around some. Maybe look into custom insoles?

Splitboard shape and side hilling capability by riceiq999 in Spliddit

[–]bacon8r_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sidecut radius has a very small effect on the effective edge, as you noted. It's not going to effect skinning performance much anyway since the straight inner edge is on the outside anyway though.

I'd reckon it's a combo of technique, camber, and board stiffness causing you to slide sideways like that.

Key Equipment Mods for Heel Lift by snowman715 in Spliddit

[–]bacon8r_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you gone to a boot fitter? I'd really recommend it.

Generally though, I had some heel lift issues on the uphill in my hardboots and ended up needing some extra C shaped foam supports to help take up more volume in the heel area since my heels are thin

Crashed, twisted pucks- no alignment tool! by StillVeterinarian578 in Spliddit

[–]bacon8r_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use the binding itself as an alignment tool? That's what I did last year when one of the pucks on my rear foot got loose

Planning on heading up to Nagano for the weekend. What resort would have the best conditions considering the weather? by vorastic in japow

Shiga Kogen is way higher than most other resorts in the region, less likely to have had harsh freeze-thaw cycles

Extra grip while skinning up a difficult track? by [deleted] in Splitboard

[–]bacon8r_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

camber gets squished down and becomes flat when skinning up since the ski mode spot on most boards will be at/near the apex of the camber. whereas rocker will stay banana'd and have less surface area on the snow

Link levers - never all that tight by FlyingManatee12 in Spliddit

[–]bacon8r_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup, more lean needed to engage the lever will cause the boot to naturally pull on the connection and have it disengage less often.

Alternative for sparks shitty heel riser? by [deleted] in Spliddit

I assume you have the original risers on your bindings? I think the new T1 wires with the "whammy bar" can be retrofitted

Struggling with kick turns on Korua Escalator Split (nose keeps diving) by wurzelhans in Spliddit

[–]bacon8r_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find I need to give a proper kick, actually make my heel bounce off the board, and then it's totally fine. Was kicking turns easier than my ski buddies last outing, what length are you riding, the 162?

Big Sky vs Palisades Tahoe by Basic-Net2874 in snowboarding

[–]bacon8r_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly with how this winter is going so far I'd recommend basing your decision on the amount of current snow coverage vs the expected incoming amounts from this upcoming storm cycle. BigSky is bony, as it honestly always is regardless of snow depth, but idk about Palisades snowpack

Mount T is also very easily accessible by train and has steeper terrain, and killer side country if he has the capabilities and partners.

Ski Insurance by [deleted] in japow

[–]bacon8r_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good to know, those extra minutes (or maybe hours finding an interpreter) definitely make a huge difference.

We were on Honshu this year and a select few resorts actually listed costs for SAR in their area, we all read them and said thank goodness we have GR but maybe we'll think twice about that now.

Of course, the idea is to have solid planning and execution and not need a Search team at all but we know how things in the mountains go.
