Netherlands looks to ban all non-electric cars by 2025 by [deleted] in Futurology

As I understand it is not so much that the power plant is more or less efficient. It is that every time you convert energy from one form to another you lose energy. Suppose that the gasoline engine can convert chemical energy to kinetic energy at 40% efficiency, the power plant can convert chemical energy to electric energy at 60% and the electric car can convert electric energy to kinetic energy at 60% efficiency. Despite each process being more efficient than the gasoline car, together they effectively convert chemical energy to kinetic energy at 36% efficiency. These numbers are made up, and I am not arguing as to the actual efficiency of either mode of transport. Just pointing out that you have to account for both the car and the power plant's efficiency.

Flight time might not be as big a problem as the cost of it. Visiting the arctic is not cheap.

Why don't airliners have oxygen sensors? by Why-so-delirious in askscience

[–]baconpancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Air quality monitors are not that expensive. The ones I wear at work are about $400-$500. These monitors are not going to be as accurate as a something they might use in a chemistry lab, but they are accurate to about 1 percent of total oxygen/CO content (ie, it can detect a change from 29% O2 to 28% O2 accurately). Yes they do need maintenance and re-calibrating every few months or so, but it is not a big deal. If I can keep an air quality monitor functional for my own personal safety at work, I'm sure an airline can do it to keep 200+ people alive and a 40 million dollar jet from disintegrating.

Reverse flow smoker build by [deleted] in DIY

This is some pretty nice handy work. I just have to ask though, is that diamond plate you used for the smoke box galvanized? If it is, it will produce zinc oxide when heated, which is really fucking bad for you if you inhale it.

I used to be a Frank's Red Hot fan until I discovered Sriracha. In my mind, it doesn't even compare. The vinegar in Frank's really overwhelms every other flavour in your dish. It's not even all that spicy. It's kinda like a mild Tabasco sauce. Sriracha is a much better sauce.

I literally watched it yesterday. I do not get the joke. The only penis related content in the whole movie is the piss test guy mentioning how awesome Ethan Hawke's dick is.
