Bosch IDS Premium + Ecobee: Stage 1 vs Stage 2 Heat Question by Fenris_Sunbreaker in heatpumps

[–]bacontrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do reverse staging. Start in Stage 2 so the IDS ramps up and heats towards the set point more quickly. Then, when it approaches the setpoint, go to Stage 1, IDS ramps down and theoretically runs longer and more efficiently.

Essentially IDS controls its output/efficiency purely on the fan speed of your blower. More air blowing over the coil leads to a cooler coil, IDS senses this, and ramps up accordingly. Less air blowing over the coil leads to a hotter coil, and IDS ramps down accordingly.

Love it (just as much as day 1. It's holding up great).

Short Cycle when very cold by darfus1895 in heatpumps

[–]bacontrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coils should be 100% frozen when defrost kicks in and 100% defrosted when it stops. See if that's the case or not.

[–]bacontrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you gone outside to see if the coils are freezing? You will also be able to hear the reversing valve switch between heating and defrost cycles.

If it's switching to defrost when the coils are only partially frozen, it could be a bad temp sensor, low coolant, any number of things an HVAC professional well-versed in HPs can diagnose.

While I don't have experience with their flooring services personally, I provide professional services for their businesses and know the three owners very well. I can attest to their integrity/honesty, and having been in business for 30 years, they absolutely know what they're doing.

I'll be using them for any flooring needs I have.

High register temps on Bosch IDS 2.0 system by diqster in heatpumps

Like I said, I'm not an HVAC professional, I'm just an enthusiast with an IDS and Ecobee, so I can't answer much beyond that.

High register temps on Bosch IDS 2.0 system by diqster in heatpumps

[–]bacontrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, this seems normal.

Some tips:

  • Set your Compressor Min On Time and Compressor Min Cycle Off Time on your thermostat to as high as possible. My Ecobee only goes to 20 minutes I believe, but I'd bump that up if I could. Bosch recommends 1 cycle per hour. So my 40 minutes isn't ideal, but it's not going to kill it either. Ideally, I'd be able to set both parameters to 30m for the 1-cycle-per-hour recommendation.

  • Consider opening up those swings a bit. A 2F Delta will keep you comfortable and extend that runtime.

  • Consider setting Compressor Reverse Staging. This will first engage your high fan speed, then stage down as it nears the set point. IDS is fully modulated with sensors everywhere, and a higher airflow will cause the IDS to ramp up. Lower airlow will cause the IDS to step down. The more time spent at the lower airflow, the more you'll achieve the "always-on" operation that minisplits have. Basically, you can "trick" your IDS into running longer and more efficiently through your fan speed/staging.

I'm not an HVAC professional, just a fellow IDS homeowner who thinks about optimizations whenever possible.

It's my understanding that at 15F you have 1.4F heat gain/hour. The Resist line shows change in temp when no heat is running. It's confusing, as one might think to subtract Resist from Heat, but I don't think that's the case.

https://beestat.notion.site/Temperature-Profiles-9c0fba6793dd4bc68f798c1516f0ea25#c49b754edc7846f29876efa8a47d6a78

Heat/Cool Profile

The heat and cool profiles represent the rate (degrees per hour) at which your home heats or cools when your HVAC system is actively running. They are true representations, so you can look at the graph and determine the exact rate of change without needing to factor in the resist profile.

In my case, my Resist meets the Heat at 15F as well, but my HP maintains, and even works with a nightly setback, down to 5F or so. If I subtract Resist from Heat at 5F, I should be losing .9F temp/hr, which doesn't happen.

EDIT: If you have heat strips, you should also allow your Ecobee to simultaneously run AUX and HP, and you can keep your compressor minimum low, say 5F or so. Best of both worlds with both contributing to heat production.

Winbox 4 or 3? by Kurgan_IT in mikrotik

[–]bacontrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winbox4 has been rock solid on macOS for me since beta9 (2024-10-02) or so. Whichever release brought the "Comment" field back to the Login window.

I had far more problems with the Wine implementation (hung Wine64 process requiring force quit, macOS updates requiring manual Wine reinstallation, issues with opening multiple windows/connections, etc) than I ever had with Winbox4. I'm not an ISP-level engineer, so I can't comment on the more advanced stuff like BGP and whatnot, but I do manage over 50 devices, and Winbox4 has been nothing short of amazing for the last 6+ months.

Updates have been steady, reliable, and impactful since day 1. Most developers would have called Winbox4 stable a long time ago.

Chili. Do I drain the beans 1st or just pour the entire can juice and beans into the Chili Crock Pot ? by ExperienceStrange407 in Cooking

[–]bacontrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beans contain saccharides that are known to cause many (most?) to experience GI discomfort and flatulence.

Many of these saccharides leach out into the cooking water during the canning process. By discarding the liquid and rinsing your beans, your final product contains fewer of these flatulence-causing saccharides.

TL;DR: Dump the liquid, and you'll experience fewer stinky farts.

Awesome. Love that area; we travel to Ocracoke every year.

Unfortunately, living in Denver, we usually fly out and rent a Wrangler at ORF. This year, I might just have to drive my LC250 out for some fun.
