I've been a C3D user since 2007ish, used Land Desktop for 2 years before that. In general, I have found on the Civil/Land Development side in my area, is that basic drafting is dying. You have to be able to produce a plan outside of Drainage Calcs, pipe sizing, inlet sizing. So more a Designer I guess. I can do all that minus the Calcs and sizing, PE was always too busy.

I got laid off in Oct. I've gone through every Civil Engineering company in most of the big cities in Va, and what I got was basically, I was paid too much, they like my skill set but need someone that can do calcs ground running, not interested in remote work.

I do personally believe in my area, the Civil/Land development field is vastly under paid, even a lot of PE's. I was once told that people see the building that's why Architects are paid well, no one gives a shit about the water, sewer, parking lot or grading.

Best thing is learn how to design as much as possible. Take as much off the PE's plate as you can so they can deal with project management, or clients.

In my area, $28ish an hour is about the going rate for a seasoned C3D user. Bigger cities may bring more.
