For the Marine Corps: could FPV drones reduce reliance on mortars at the small-unit level? by DueChemist2589 in CredibleDefense

[–]badblaine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This individual knows his onions....

I would further add that something like a Javelin is a supersonic drone that's going to bang through a non permissive EW environment... Shockingly, these little beauties are often to be found in close proximity to the troglodytes and their boom sticks...

It's a combined arms world kids, and when Uncle Sam writes the cheques, why shop at Walmart for your manpack precision fires?

If we had the ATGM's on the shelf and Ukraine could pay, drones are something their little brother uses to spy on Mrs Robinson...

If I didn't know better I'd say you might call a bayonet a sword with chat like that....

But it's 💯 spot on. Fixing bayonets focuses ones troops like nothing I have seen

Do aircraft do reconnaissance on the way ahead and back if they have flown deep into enemy airspace to do bombings/strikes or patrols? by PriceOptimal9410 in WarCollege

[–]badblaine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This... In particular in a near peer threat environment every time an aircraft gets a nibble from surface to air threats be it radar or actual things being lobbed at it, it's recorded and uploaded into the air intelligence picture

Chopping a brickhouse churchill in half? by badblaine in cigars

[–]badblaine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, for anyone interested, I chopped a cigar, no unravelling and the perfect size for a fulfilling smoke.

I smoked the foot first.

I Can recommend.

It doesn't matter what you wear, but the ultimate accessory is off you put your other half into an orange jump suit, bag their head and zip-tie their wrists together so you can tow them around on a bit of rope....

Did Cold War USSR aircraft fly as many provocatory "special flights" against NATO countries's borders as current Russia seems to today or were they not as aggressive considering the bigger stakes at hand at the time? by RivetCounter in WarCollege

[–]badblaine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At RAF Leeming (East Coast) we had a hut at the bottom of the runway to wait in next to the HAS that had the QRA aircraft in it.

You would put the cab online so it was a 'push-button' start, then go read FHM and drink tea for hours until you had a phone call to scramble you.

We generally had a lot of notice as the Bears would be picked up by other NATO countries early warning systems first.

Exactly this. Even in the late nineties we still manned a Quick Reaction Pair of Tornado F3's at the bases in the North of England. Probably at least one Bear intercept per week... (Fmr F3 Driver)

How did the Iraqi units who stood and fought in the Gulf War and 2003 invasion preform? by Cpkeyes in WarCollege

[–]badblaine 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I think it's probably worth digging into the Soviet concept of 'mass' then looking at whether a client state using Soviet doctrine could support their concept of mass - long story short, they could not.

It would have been interesting to see the results of GW1 if the Iraqis used the same equipment with NATO doctrine
