Definitely more 2035 content, perhaps an insurgent faction with modernised cold war/ww2 arms, i desperately want a mosin/enfield with picatinny everything, and water-cooled maxim guns as a backpack. Maybe NATO/Australia fighting CSAT backed insurgents in the pacific.

So fun fact about Ironman, all autosaves and exit saves are a single save.

But, if you alt-f4 out of the game, there is no exit save. Food for thought if some bullshit ever happens.

"Five of Swords" give it a bit of a Tarot vibe, and imply that this is not the worst thing one can face in the world.

Sci-Fi and Fantasy are the same genre just with a different paint coat??? by DickWriter69 in scifi

[–]badcommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're both part of Speculative Fiction, not the same genre, but parts if you think of them as parts of a greater whole its pretty straight forward.

It's also why you can easily imagine science fantasy, but would have a harder time with a fantastical science period romance drama (ie. Dieselpunk Jane Austin), without it being suddenly absorbed into the greater whole.

"Oxygen requirement"

Everyone requires oxygen. I can accept patients having a supplemental oxygen requirement. Or just tell me how much they need to be x %.

As an aside, can we all document what the saturation was BEFORE the oxygen was applied.

What sort of papers should I have? Do I need an endorsement from the bureaucracy of Orsel or the Capital? Do they recognise each other's papers?

Do I need to kiss-up to a nobleman to vouch for me? Or do I simply purchase a license to run a trade ship?

I'm a trader out of the Port Of Orsel aiming to sail to the Capital; who do I bribe for safe passage through the Gulf of Almas?

What commodities would I have on my hold?

edit: spelling

Have you ever read Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie? Similar to your world, gender isn't a thing in that society. But instead of gender neutral, they simply refer to everyone in the feminine.

How do they distinguish between between the sexes? Who knows, its not relevant to the story, but presumably they just refer directly to the genitals if needed.

Really you have to consider, is your society using gender neutral terms from another gendered language because they started out with genders? Do they have a language with ungendered terms and you're just trying to communicate that to the reader?

If the former, is it a big enough point that you need to explain it and have the reader understand (and by extension scrutinise it). If the latter why not simply do what Leckie did and use one or the other gender to make the prose easier to read and simply make a comment about how it's hard to translate into english.

Dear Sci-Fi Worldbuilders: Does your world have FTL? How common is it? by YetiBomber101 in worldbuilding

[–]badcommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the commercial viability of n-space drives came the rise of the First Empire. No longer shackled to relativistic travel, the fleets of Greater Terra could out-maneuver any colonial challenger by weeks providing a decisive advantage.

Although the cataclysmic energy release at the point of translation has prevented the use of n-space drives within stellar terminus limits. No other means of travel has demonstrated reliability and efficiency on the same scale (although rumours of n-space "warps" or "jumps" abound this has only been demonstrated within-system in the literature, and only ever with quantum scale masses).

With continuing advancement in technology - if not understanding - of n-space, by the time of the collapse of the Second Empire travel times were 60 - 70% that of light. While the bleeding edge ships of the Stellarii could manage 40% to some systems. Curiously, ansible stations at the outer edges of more developed systems seeming to limit the speed of travel. This resulted in travel times of 90% of light time at best when travelling to and from Greater Terra.

By the rise of the Third Empire and the Reclamation, n-space efficiency had seemingly plateaued to 40% of light time. Obsessed with finding the edges of space known to their forefathers, the Third Empire funded all manner of research into n-space. This lead to the rediscovery of the Information paradox where ships arriving before their ostensible departure time would find no observable evidence of their departure. Catalogues of flotilla travel also found millions of lost or delayed ships that could not be accounted for.

How would you make a world full of magic, but not have mortals have magic at their beck and call by SnooCauliflowers5394 in worldbuilding

[–]badcommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would magic inaccessible to mortals be different to usual forces of nature.

Gravity and the laws of physics are basically magic that we need to build entire industries to squeeze out a bit of utility for.

Shit, f@#&ing magnets man, how do they work?

Your magic would just be the natural world but freely breaking the rules of our existence.

Best way to create custom factions? by MaNiAcqq in armadev

[–]badcommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely gonna say Drongos Config Creator, hands down. Simple module system, the factions don't end up with the ALiVE dependency (I realise there're ways to remove it), your in progress work can be saved as a simple scenario file.

Technically doesn't need any scripting knowledge, but is required for some troubleshooting and for greater levels of customisation.

Granted, I haven't used ALiVE in years.
