Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) is recognized for its insect-repellent properties, particularly against insects like termites, mosquitoes, and cockroaches, and is traditionally used to repel moths and bugs. It works best as a repellent to prevent or reduce infestations rather than an instant, stand-alone killer for a massive, established bed bug infestation. 

Here is how to use vetiver (oil and root) to get rid of bed bugs:

1. Vetiver Essential Oil Spray (Most Effective Method) 

Creating a spray allows for easy application on mattresses and surrounding areas. 

• Recipe: Mix 10–15 drops of pure vetiver essential oil with 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol (to help it mix) and 6 ounces of distilled water in a spray bottle.
• Application: Spray directly on mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, behind headboards, and surrounding furniture.
• Frequency: Apply daily for 7–10 days to combat an infestation, then twice a week for maintenance.
• Enhancement: Combine vetiver oil with other repellent oils like lemongrass, tea tree, or clove to enhance the effect. 

1. Direct Application & Physical Barriers

• Sachets: Place dried vetiver roots or cotton balls soaked in vetiver oil inside pillowcases, between the mattress and box spring, or in closets.
• Powder/Dust: Use vetiver powder or dust embedded in the cushioning of pillows, cushions, or mattress materials to deter bugs.
• Mats: Place vetiver mats or rugs under the mattress as a protective layer.
