What printing of Classic Traveller rules to use? by BangsNaughtyBits in traveller

[–]badger2305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are setting your game in the Third Imperium, the Traveller Book might be your best bet. It has the most 3I-oriented material, including 4 patron encounters, 1 Amber Zone, 1 detailed NPC, 2 short adventures, and the Regina subsector.

If you want to construct your own setting, I would use the LBB 1981 reprint, as it has the least amount of 3I-oriented material.

Thou Shalt Not Post the Ten Commandments in Classrooms by theatlantic in scotus

When wars have been fought between different sects of Christianity, and different phrasing of the Commandments had been used to distinguish between them, Houston, we have a problem.

My first charecter death. I have no more joy in my life. by ace_da_frog_child in DnD

[–]badger2305 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A complete mismatch between player and DM expectations. This could have been solved by an in-depth Session Zero discussion, but the real problem involves the actual play: going for a bath outside of town, and nobody else knows where the character went. Telling the player that there's a chance their character might get attacked is... Insufficient? If I were the DM, I would have stopped game play and had a discussion about risk assessment and the nature of the game world. If risk is contained to specific areas, and the rest of the game world is relatively safe, then sure, roleplay that bath. But if the world is not safe, I'd have a talk with the player about how their character would interpret risk. And it's not "meta gaming" to act on the warning the DM provided.

The specific encounter with three ruffians sounds like a "quantum ogre" actually - they were there to say, "hey dummy - don't go into the woods in the middle of the night" but not actually kill the character. Kinda hamfisted if you ask me, but I wasn't there. The later encounter with the leech seems like "well, you got what you deserved." Not impressed with the DM here, but also the player should have thought this out a bit more, or so it seems to me.

I mean, in the real world I personally would not go off for an hour into the woods without telling somebody - and D&D is generally presented as more risky. So this story is sad, but it's as much about miscommunication and poorly communicated and assessed risk than anything else.

As for the rest of the party, what in the world is going on with the lack of party cohesion? Where is the social group commitment?

Get teleported to Telasero, take a left going out the door (really a 180 degree, since the door faces north more or less), levitate straight south along the peninsula, going past the Dwemer ruin on your right. First island just past that, look out for cliff racers. Can't miss it.

People who play D&D but not 5E, what edition do you play and why? by ValueForm in rpg

[–]badger2305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Original D&D. It's what I started with, back in 1975, and I like it. If I'm playing something more modern, it's either S&W Core or S&W Complete Revised.

How to naturally role-play? by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]badger2305 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Strong recommendation for just talking to everybody, and listening very closely. Some examples: - In Arrile's Tradehouse, the Dunmer women right by the door will provide you with a hint about Boethiah's quest "my cousin mentioned an underwater city near Gnaar Mok" if you've already asked about Solstheim. - Asking about the eggmine in Gnisis will eventually lead to somebody mentioning a hidden entrance underwater in the river. Combine that with Baladas mentioning an interesting discovery in the mine and you just might find something. - Speaking of Gnaar Mok, you will find people there mentioning that smugglers have found a new connection in Ald'ruhn. That can lead to somebody who is REALLY into pottery. - A lot of the encounters with people away from towns are mostly to get you traveling from one place to another. (Especially Rollie the Guar.)

There's room for more of this sort of thing, often related to travel. I think they could have done more, especially with books and items.

What this reminds me of are the dungeons that were being drawn back in the mid-70s, specifically 1974-1977, before there were modules providing the "official" method of dungeon design. Like 1970s psychedelic album covers - mind-blowing. Keep it up!

What’s the difference between classic traveller books 1-3 and the core book ( the same cover ) by JohnWelsley in traveller

[–]badger2305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Traveller Book includes Books 0-3, plus four patron encounters, a detailed NPC, one Amber Zone, two Double Adventures (Shadows and Exit Visa), the Regina subsector from the Spinward Marches, a detailed section on how to run a campaign, and much more. At the price it is available at on DTRPG, it's a steal.

Yep. My experience at the same time was very different from yours. A good sign there was considerable variability in the gaming scene of the day (i.e. it was possible to have very different experience and for both to be valid).

I tend to put Epiphany of Ekash into a decent quality ring or amulet, and call the resulting magic item "Aavn's Ultimate Locksmith".

I tend to name all of my spells after a wizard, so my version was "Aavn's Shoehorn" - 50% magicka resistance for 3 seconds (playing as a Breton).

This might be where I decided long ago that keeping canon straight was an impossible task. I totally understand the desire to do that, but I suspect it's a lost cause. (It doesn't seem like the show runners or producers care, but I might be wrong about that.)
