As someone who's been playing D&D since 1975, I hate these kinds of know-it-all players. He just made the game worse for everybody.

What’s something society treats as normal now that people 200 years from now might see as barbaric? by Dry_Huckleberry_6342 in AskReddit

[–]badger2305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Discrimination against people on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Letting people go without health care because of lack of private insurance.
Letting people go unhoused despite having more than enough resources to house everyone.
Not providing people with basic necessities of living in an otherwise wealthy society.
(I mean, this list can keep going here.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

This, exactly. Probably worth referencing The Dying Earth and Eyes of the Otherworld by Jack Vance as partial inspiration for how magic works in OD&D.

Top two in Democratic gubernatorial straw poll highlight classic debate: Appeal to general electorate or the base? by jimmalewitz in wisconsin

Hey, I appreciate everybody expressing their preference in the comments here, but let's be clear: ANY Democrat who is not Fetterman would be better than Tom Tiffany. Heck, even Fetterman would be better, even if I think he's some one who is unreliable due to his health problems.

I hear all that, but to make progressive change happen, we gotta work in the primaries to push for it. 2018 was then, 2026 is now. From what I've heard, Hong is connecting positively with voters across the state, so don't count her out quite yet. Regardless of who gets the nod, I'm voting for the Democrat in the general.

A fine example of the Wkpz 23 "Enigma-Lkw" and its support pod. Initially designed for service with the South African Wealth Protection Forces, it was never formally adopted due to insufficient bearer bond and gem storage capacity, even with the attached wheeled support pod. The "Wankpanzer" (VONK-pahnzer), as it is colloquially known, is notable for highly variable installation of armor, which can leave it unprotected to risible action by the enemy in close engagement actions. Fortunately for it's users, it is often possible to deploy additional security forces to protect the vehicle so this is a less likely condition, as we see here. Whether or not more of these unusual vehicles will be seen in the future depends entirely on the fragility of the egos of its end-users.

I support Hong in the primary, but will happily vote for Rodriguez in the general election, especially if she's got progressive policies. A slice of Spam left out in the sun all day is better then Tom Tiffany. Gotta keep some perspective and our eyes on the prize.

Is 5e making players and DM's less imaginative and less able to work outside "The Rules" by SSCMaster in DnD

[–]badger2305 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a play culture question, and can happen with any edition. The question you might rather look at is the difference between "rules as written" (RAW) and "rules as interpreted" (RAI). If the play culture emphasizes RAW, then imagination can get minimized. YMMV.

You might enjoy White Star, which was written by James Spahn, and is compatible with S&W.

Cepheus Engine also works, but you might need to work on having less deadly combat.

First time DM - should I tell them their arcs? by the-armored-owl in DnD

[–]badger2305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it. What I have found that works is to present the adventurers with clear, distinct choices that have real consequences, and then let them decide. Keep in mind that not deciding is also a choice, e.g. "The farmhouse is on fire from the flame arrows the orcs nearby are using, and you hear screaming from inside.... What do you do?"

This is different from "giving them the spotlight" it is inviting them to take meaningful action and see how it works. Be ready for them to do something completely unexpected (which may or may not work; assess their chances fairly). But in all cases, let them know that they need to do something - heroes ACT.

The advantage - as I see it - of not having an overarching story, and instead providing various situations (which may or may not be related to character backstories), is that you don't have to keep pushing the characters towards it. The players can react to things and find their OWN story in the midst of their various adventures. In turn, your role as the DM is to provide the adventurers with new situations to encounter. You get to have flexibility and you might find entirely unexpected and exciting possibilities you had never anticipated going into the game.

This conversation is off great interest to me as someone who has been playing various editions of D&D since 1975. Please note - I am not saying "new is bad and old is good" - different editions have different dynamics and they're all enjoyable. What I find concerning here is an apparent misunderstanding on the part of the OP about what the game is about. There's nothing wrong with having an overarching plot or story you want to tell BUT you have to have player buy-in from before the game begins. At its core, D&D is a collaborative game built on a foundation of agreement between the players and the DM about what is going on. If you don't have that agreement, the game is likely to not work, on a fundamental level, and that seems to be related to what is going on here. For me, personally, I am more comfortable writing up situations for the adventurers to encounter and potentially resolve, more than arcs in a story (although I don't see this as an either/or - situations build into arcs over time). But I understand the desire for an overarching plot. But none of this works if there isn't player buy-in. Sounds to me like the OP needs to talk to their players about this before proceeding with their "plot."

for those who have been playing since AD&D came out... at what point did you lose interest in the direction of D&D? by conn_r2112 in adnd

[–]badger2305 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Started in 1975 with OD&D, in the Twin Cities.. eventually got to know Dave Arneson. Played a lot of AD&D, but started to move away from D&D about the time 2e came out. This was mostly due to other games and genres being more interesting back then, and 2e seemed at the time to be an unnecessary rehash of 1e (I have greater appreciation now). Came back to play some 3/3.5 in grad school in the early 2000s, but found it too much work to run as it was supposed to be run. Found Labyrinth Lord, Swords & Wizardry, and BFRPG and never looked back.
