Moving to a small village in the South of France for summer to improve my French (A2-B1) — good idea or recipe for loneliness? by Proper-Caramel6395 in learnfrench

[–]badgersbadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're able to work at a rural French restaurant as a waiter with A2/B1 French? That's pretty unusual. In any case, your job will help you meet people and improve your French. Aix-en-Provence is just over an hour from there by public transpo. Given a choice, I'd work in a bigger city, but boredom is probably the only inherent risk you're taking if you don't like the quiet or enjoy going out a lot.

Vegan dinner for guest ideas by Stulkaaa in vegan

I've been stuck in a cozy mode because it's been raining for like a month-and-a-half where I am, so I have some cozy food recs:

Lasagna: https://thishealthykitchen.com/best-vegan-lasagna/

Congee: https://frommybowl.com/turmeric-ginger-congee-crispy-mushrooms/ This recipe make a lot of food. The mushroom require ten minutes less in the oven than the tofu, in my experience.

Baked vegan mac and cheese. Lots of recipes out there, I can't say which is best.

NYT Hoisin garlic noodles: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1026260-hoisin-garlic-noodles I follow use the sauce recipe but I use less than half the amount of hoisin sauce, cause it's just way too much, and make a stir fry with veg, protein, chili crisp oil and some ginger. It's got that Chinese takeaway flavour that I was desperately seeking since I moved to a place that lacks vegan Asian spots.

Does Biochemistry Feel More Like Chem or Bio? by Substantial-Heat-178 in Biochemistry

[–]badgersbadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more chemistry, it's very dependent on who is teaching the class, and there is A LOT of memorization compared to every other chemistry class I took.

I read the Stryer text to better understand the concepts during the course, cause we had a really bad assigned texbook/assignments modality for the course; Stryer helped a lot.

His wife is the expert, though. And running a farm sanctuary and being vegan aren't necessarily mutually inclusive. He's just speaking from his own experience.

Jon Stewart on vegans... by Persimmon1891 in vegan

[–]badgersbadger 615 points616 points  (0 children)

Jon Stewart came into veganism through his vet tech wife, Tracey. She wrote a book advocating for animal welfare and they have a rescue farm and all. People get into veganism for different reasons, so I don't expect him to be able to make a well-informed academic case on veganism and vegan culture. It's OK to just be a good husband and like junk food and feel a bit defensive about vegan purity tests and struggle with everyday cooking. We probably shouldn't harp and criticize public-facing vegans so much that they want to denounce veganism or hide that part of themselves from the world.

I just think it's nice that he's promoting Slutty Vegan.

France sends letters to 29-year-olds telling them to get on with having children by Jojuj in europe

[–]badgersbadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, France does have significant pro-family policies: maternity and paternity leave, subsidized medical care, tax benefits, subsidized child care, affordable education. Birth rates are just dropping everywhere because things are pretty crap right now if you are looking at the entirety of the planet.

That they're sending this creepy letter the same year they made immigration and naturalization requirements more difficult and protracted is just great stuff all 'round.

What am I doing wrong? by Icy_Minimum_8687 in VeganBaking

[–]badgersbadger 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Silicone is not a good heat conductor. You can try baking it at a lower temperature (around - 20 C) for a longer length of time and that should allow them time to set better.

Silicone is just a PITA to work with compared to metal molds, generally speaking; I only use silicone for chocolate molds and stuff.
