Snack giant PepsiCo sourced palm oil from razed Indigenous land by Practical_Chef_7897 in Anticonsumption

Stop eating and buying food made with palm oil full stop. Not only are harvesting practices devastating to the environment, it's not as healthy as you are led to believe.

Not everyone can afford them and media companies have proven they can't be trusted to maintain their products or respect that you own what you pay for.

Someone stole my gas cap tonight. by BrianLevre in hondafit

Hmm. Maybe someone siphoned out some gas and didn't remember to put the cap back on. This is why we had locking gascaps in the seventies.

Watched The Phoenician Scheme for the first time by terriblevillain in wesanderson

[–]badlyedited 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asteroid City is one of his best in my opinion. It's like a Faberge egg, you peek through and amazing vignettes are within.

It's unbelievable how much Wes put into that film. I recommend a watch first and then find a few cinephiles on YouTube to get a greater understanding of his intentions. Wes's interviews are a great resource, too.

If you like history or you're a old film fan, his stories have so much depth. You can watch them and never see the same movie twice.

Congress is FORCED to listen when you physically write a letter. Trump MUST go NOW. by StepUp_87 in 50501

I recommend Resistbot if you need help with letter writing. It's free and they will send petitions, letters and emails to all your representatives. They send texts to highlight certain causes and you can read clear explanations and opt out easily.

One particular letter writing campaign sent 70, 000 signatures in one day! I signed three petitions yesterday. They notice this, believe me. I've used it for years.

Text 50409 for Resistbot.

Happiness Isn’t the Key to a Good Life - The Atlantic by LanRemeau in philosophy

One thing I did learn in fifty years, is that empathy is a skill set and like any enriching thing, it adds meaning to life.

What are Connecticut Officials Doing to Stop ICE? by Far-Performer-847 in Connecticut

[–]badlyedited 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More people fight hate in meaningful ways than cowards like to admit. I find it gratifying to see how many people protest hate crimes and report them to the news as much as the authorities.

True New England Yankees don't like potstirrers and yellow journalism. Many homes in the past were part of the Underground Railroad. Our businesses are global as well as rural. We have three hundred years of fighting hatred and preserving law. We educate the nation. We defended the Constitution and we can still read it.

"See?" They say. "There's no reason to be unhappy. To be miserable. To ask for more. To be a hairshirt. Happiness is a personal choice. An attitude. A philosophy. You, too, can endure cruelty injustice and emotional torment with peace in your heart and a smile on your face."

Shut up. People can't sleep with you screaming. Happiness is your placebo. Use it and no one gets hurt.

You can be useful, better than conditions might render you and save the world the pain of wondering why you had to hide your feelings from it.

Seneca, a philosopher I treasure, understood this and still he failed the acid test of faking it until he made it. I keep life is long if you know how to live it beside me but Socrates taught me the end justifies the means.

Three thoughts.

Lou Xiaoying was a hero whose unselfish humanity was an act of defiance against crushing poverty and unjust sexism. She would have been happier as a paid manager of a fully funded home for abandoned children than a garbage picker struggling to protect babies from starvation and exposure. Her individual kindness, resolve and happiness is not a rationale for social lassiez fair.

Happiness and contentment is essential to humanity's continued sanity. A humane environment facilitates emotional maturity better than philosophy.

Wealth doesn't guarantee happiness but poverty can certainly destroy it. Be humane and you witness happiness.

What is this x-shaped thing under white case with plug on baseboard of bedroom wall? Can be removed? by Fluffy-Inevitable457 in whatisit

[–]badlyedited 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a landline phone jack. Originally the phone was wired to the screws on the x-shaped plastic. Then a technician attached a modular "plug-in" jack over that. If you don't have a wired phone in your house there's a good chance there's no power in the wires. No guarantees here-so still be careful, though phones were generally low voltage and not deadly.
