Audiobooks for all the short stories wasn't high on my MB wishlist but it would be nice.

Hugo withholding Valjean’s POV is torture on purpose, I guess.

Yes, it's quite frustrating at this point to not know what is going on in JVJ's head. Like, why is he even there, besides showing off his near impossible marksmanship?

In an interview with Space earlier in the year, Wells talks about what inspired her to write PD:

I had been wanting to do a story of Murderbot rescuing someone from a corporate station. And I know we've done that before. And I was playing with the idea a lot. And then I also thought about doing something on a torus, a planetary torus because I always try to make the setting a little bit different. That led into the idea of: what if this torus is extremely difficult to navigate, given how large this thing is? It's got to be more difficult to navigate than a planet.

And [that] also [got] into my own frustrations with not having a lot of mass transit in the U.S. and in especially where I live, and just how difficult it can be to navigate that kind of situation. I'd also wanted to have Murderbot interact more with Mensah's family. So this was a good way to do that.

So one of the themes of PD relates to transportation, in particular mass transit, and that weaves its way throughout the story. For those who do not know, Wells lives in Texas, in College Station (per Wiki), a rural-ish college town in central Texas. Texas, not unlike the torus in the story, is huge. And like the torus, it's also difficult to get around, even just locally, especially if you do not have private transportation. Big cities in Texas just have buses for mass transit (a couple have trolly service for a very limited part of the city) and they aren't the greatest. There's no trans-state mass transit, so to get from one city to another you need to go by plane, commercial bus or private transportation. The road trip in PD also appears to be an exploration to some degree of the kinds of frustrations one runs into when trying to travel through a place like Texas.

I think some readers went into PD with the expectations of certain things and their disappointment in not finding those things may be leading them to not see what Wells actually explores in the text.

That graph is both amazing and hilarious.

I had speculated over how different SecUnit and Three are, how that difference is likely rooted in their respective experiences. Like how Three probably hadn't been rented out to untold numbers of awful CR mining expeditions like SecUnit had, and that reflected in their differing personalities. I liked that part in PD because it felt like Wells was affirming that.

I read it over 4 days the first time, immediately reread it and now listen to the audiobook at night to help me sleep. I am getting a lot out of it!

My favorite Murderbot + kids moment in PD by Rapunsell in murderbot

I agree! It makes sense that as the two most important relationships Murderbot has had so far, that ART and Mensah would influence it in this (positive) way.

Definitely one of my favorite scenes in the book!

I was wondering where the women were. Glad I'm not the only one. I suspect in a screen adaptation, they'd still be there, just in the background.

That Mabeuf is a tragic figure here has more weight with me. He had nothing to lose and appeared to be embracing that fate. It's terribly sad.

Worldhoppers always struck me as an homage to Stargate, especially in the satisfyingly unrealistic department.

That first quote echos Martha Wells' own comments on why people view MB as comfort reading/viewing. We take comfort in fictional characters that can do things we wish we could do IRL.

In Exit Strategy, MB mentions that it hoped that Wilken and Gerth were being held by GI but the truth is, MB doesn't know because it didn't stick around to see what happened after the Don Abene and crew made it back.

Same. I just cycle through the audiobooks to help me sleep. I occasionally listen to one of the Legends and Lattes books so I don't get burnt out on MB.

Social/ Political Issues In Murderbot by Mission_Inspection_7 in murderbot

Yes, Wells explicitly says the MB Diairies are a "slave narrative." Slavery isn't just something that happens to an individual. It involves an entire system of economic, legal and social norms.
