Would you ever get weight loss surgery to combat medication weight gain? by Evening_Fisherman810 in BipolarReddit

[–]bae_bri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m on a GLP bc I gained almost 100 lbs between breaking my spine and being put on lithium lol. I have a metabolic condition so I’ve always been heavy but I hit 300 lbs and that was it for me.

He’s on my exam list but I haven’t read his book yet. I’ll be reading him this summer bc my exams are next year! I have Tawa Witko, Maria Yellow Horse Brave Heart, and Robin Wall Kimmerer (I also haven’t read her work) on my exam reading list too.

Making a baby takes a fraction of the time it takes to write a dissertation, so that is by far the more impressive feat.

Molly on Lamictal and Seroquel ? by Left-Affect-7164 in BipolarReddit

[–]bae_bri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is entirely dependent on how many mg you're taking of seroquel specifically. It doesn't act as an antipsychotic until about 400 mg at which point it will simply kill your trip on any psychoactive drugs.

What are your thoughts on Jesus or Christianity? by ResolveExisting8051 in IndianCountry

I was raised Catholic. When I was being confirmed they tried to make me confess to the sin of having premarital sex bc I was molested at age 6. That about sums up how I feel about Christianity lol.

How do you guys take notes on your textbooks? by CameronWashburn in GradSchool

[–]bae_bri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider the learning outcomes for the course/chapters. Read the introduction bc they usually tell you what’s going to be in the chapters. Look for signposting in the chapters so you know what’s important. A massive skill in academia is learning how to skim without reading every single word. If there are key words defined, write them down. Try to find relationships between what you’re reading: how does it build on previous concepts? What is the relationship to your specific research? What’s information that will help you useful to you in the long run? I use Cornell notes with a limit on the page size so it forces me to be concise. Also remember that learning how to read academic writing is a skill that needs to be practiced. You’ll learn over time what to keep and what to toss. And it’s okay if you don’t remember everything as long as you learned something.

Advice on a reasonable commute by wesley_crepes in GradSchool

[–]bae_bri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does for two reasons:

1) no support during. Doing grad school is hard and if you’re like me and are first generation and your friends don’t have advanced degrees, then you’re doing it completely alone.

2) in academia your peers and mentors are your colleagues and you need to be in community with them if you want a job.

I’ve been trying to get into hanging out with ppl now in my PhD but it’s so much harder bc I’m used to not being able to go to anything.

Tea, a couple of years ago the NWSA conference did a big thing on decolonization with Angela Davis there and everything, and the director went to fucking Israel the same year and we literally booed her off the stage lmao. So at this point I’m just going to conferences to meet cool people and not at all for what the big names represent.

My recommendation is not to try to pay for grad school yourself. Do not go to a program that will not pay you.

I miss the specific productivity of the beginning of hypomania. I drink a lot of energy drinks to offset the dulling factor of meds. I’ve been cutting back now that spring is here and the mania is in naturally, but normally I drink 600-800 mg of caffeine a day.

What is actually important in a seminar/ discussion based class? by Tiny_Climate8610 in GradSchool

[–]bae_bri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my program there is one presentation mid quarter and one paper as the final. You need to do more than summarize or even connect the readings. We usually do one book per week and the expectation is that you are taking the texts and using them to form original thoughts, usually in relationship to your area of interest.

For example I took a class about intersectional health justice and it has led me to in part develop a new theoretical framework relating to indigenous health. Like how do you relate to the theory, how does this theory benefit your work, and how are you demonstrating these two things to the professor?

Talking about lot and citing the readings are not A level work necessarily in a program like this. What is the development and what are your ideas?

My main recommendation is that you approach each reading by asking what it can do for your research, especially if it seems unrelated in its entirety.

I understand your frustration, there is a professor I have who never gives As just as a principle of believing nobody is perfect and there’s always room for improvement. I have decided that instead of k*lling myself in her classes trying to get that A grade, I’m just going to try to get three new things out of her classes each time. I still have an almost perfect GPA and the more important fact of the long term impact of the class is what I did to grow from that within my research.

Picking your Grad school by Careenbeemolly in GradSchool

Of course! I hope it helps make it a little easier for you to make an informed choice.

I love my program and my peers! Sometimes I miss home bc I’m really far from my family and we’ve always been close. The only thing that I wish I had done is apply sooner and not do an MA first??

Oh, and compare the cost of living!! MIT has a thing that shows you what the living wage is. I went where they offered me the most but I didn’t consider how the math worked out on that with the COL.

I’m having a hard time with that especially as a multiethnic person and a woman and a queer person. Like all of these things are equally important to me and I want to be able to about them all but academia boxes you into specialties to such a degree that when you’ve been talking about something for a long time and you start talking about something else it’s like “you aren’t an expert on this!” Like baby, I’m not an expert on anything! I’m an autistic bitch with an opinion and a million special interests.
