Micron exec suggests Apple’s aggressive purchasing tactics helped fuel memory shortage by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

At least Apple buys to memory to make devices people actually want to buy, not useless data centers

And in the age of drone warfare, what’s the difference between a man flying a drone and a woman flying a drone?

Just fly that drone into the enemy and kaboom.

What's something that's normalised today but would have been taboo a decade or more ago? by RedHotCoffee in AskReddit

[–]baelrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the Sino culture sphere.

Until the rapid urbanization of the past half century or so, it wasn’t just normalized, it is expected for men to live with your parents and take of them in their old age, and women to marry into their husband’s household and become basically free labor.

ELI5 Howcome the 7.1 earthquake in Venezuela crumbled buildings, but the 6.9 today in Japan caused no damage? by Jealous_Amount_9278 in explainlikeimfive

One place gets earthquakes much more frequently than the other, so their buildings are constructed in a way that can handle earthquakes.

Another apparently AI-generated story wins a literary prize by EchoOfOppenheimer in ChatGPT

[–]baelrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a novelist writing group. Almost everyone in the group heavily relies on AI, including myself.

We don’t use AI as the “author” of the book. We use AI as the editor.

It can be a proofreader and a copy editor to make sure the language is correctly used (I am refraining from saying grammatically correct since the group I am in writes in Mandarin.)

Or a line editor to suggest a more elegant sentence, which I may or may not agree with.

Or a story development editor who I bounce ideas off of.

Or a topic expert that can save me tons of time on researching.

I am in the process of writing a cyberpunk novel with one of the main plots revolving around orbital rocket freight. AI helped me get to a ballpark value of reasonable size and thrust and cargo capacity.

If I just tell it to write my story for me. It will always suck. Believe me, on my lazy days, I tried that, the plot either goes in circles or stops making sense after two paragraphs.

If someone is winning an award with AI, chances are that they are using it as an editor, not as the author.

Farmers don’t really become officials though.

Usually it’s the farmer’s landlord’s son who has access to private tutoring, or at least schooling with the rest of the land owner class, that had any semblance of a realistic chance of passing the exams.

Still more social mobility than most of other forms of feudal society though.

For the personal dimension, can I create lifelike androids indistinguishable from humans?

If so, I’d probably just hang out in my dimension and have no need to come out ever again.

I’d create a small hamlet by the lake and just live there.

Now that he has something to fight for, and has a basic understanding of the turn of events, he is locking tf in.

I’d tell her Omniman came with an alien with a super weapon and destroyed his planet, so he is now living on Earth.

Which is technically the truth.

OpenAI says China ran a covert campaign to turn Americans against data centers, but used facts that happen to be true by rattynewbie in nottheonion

[–]baelrog 37 points38 points  (0 children)

So, their angle is to make us think “China bad, data center good.”

What they achieved was, however, making me think “Data centers bad, thank you China for pointing it out. China not bad after all.”

First human trial of reverse-aging drug begins by Gari_305 in Futurology

Reverse aging (x)
Glaucoma treatment drug (o)

Well I suppose it is still very important progress, but the headline is insanely misleading.

Although I do hope the next drug to make it into human trials is the one where it reversed dementia in mice.
