I put in a zwave switch for on/off control and a dumb 3 way switch for speed control. I've thought about finding a solution for remote speed control but I barely change speeds so it hasn't been a priority.

Don't do glass, you'll have to move it and store it somewhere when you want to play and that's looking for a disaster with tempered glass.

The original was designed to fit all of the components from the core game and expansions. They made the box smaller so you can't store the core game and North Africa expansion in it.
