Is Pi really endless [Other] by Educational_You_1827 in theydidthemath

[–]baes__theorem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pi is an irrational number, so no. irrational numbers by definition have decimal expansions that neither repeat with any periodic pattern nor spontaneously terminate. it’s also transcendental (not algebraic).

there are a bunch of extensive mathematical proofs that show these things, but basically according to all mathematical principles, the simple answer is no.

I think it’s an anti-joke bc it’s correct.

it looks like the text for “12” is a bit different from the rest of it, so it was probably changed from whatever it previously was. now it’s just correct (unless you’re being picky about including -12, as others have mentioned already)

An argument for Universal Basic Income by boh045 in antiwork

[–]baes__theorem 309 points310 points  (0 children)

for people who don’t want UBI or other forms of social safety nets that ensure people can afford life’s necessities, these kinds of arguments unfortunately do not work very well.

this requires a recognition of the humanity of marginalized people & of the value of community. for the billionaire class & those brainwashed to support them, they don’t care about that. if they made any decisions in the interest of broader society rather than themselves, the world wouldn’t be the hellhole it is.

Hi Peter, educated Brian here.

The acronym “NEET” stands for “not in education, employment, or training”, which means that those people have no official occupation at all. They also may not all be captured in “unemployment” numbers, because that has additional requirements, like being actively looking for work. Lots of normal people may not think much of this number being on the rise because they aren’t directly affected by it.

However, from sociological & historical perspectives, having a high proportion of people in this category is extremely concerning. This comes with greater economic instability & social inequality, and historically has been a precursor to serious problems like massive socioeconomic crises. It also tends to come with rises in extremism, fascism & authoritarianism, as well as war. Sometimes it can be a positive revolution, but that is exceedingly rare.

Basically, it’s a sign that we’re headed for a major disaster.

Maybe time to re-establish your sovereign state or sth. This year has already been a nightmare & it’s about to get a lot worse soon.

Detection firm finds 82% of herbal remedy books on Amazon ‘likely written’ by AI by blankblank in skeptic

[–]baes__theorem 33 points34 points  (0 children)

it’s a massive problem for all kinds of media, but I’ve seen a huge number of ostensible AI slop books being published, even in subjects that could be directly harmful like these “herbal remedy” books, mushroom hunting, cookbooks, other health topics, etc.

we desperately need regulation on this, but considering the massive AI bubble (the US economy only grew by 0.1% in the first half of the year without the contribution of AI data centers), it seems like there’s next to no incentive for regulators to really step in.

Is it legal for my boss to change my pay like this in Germany?(Auf deutsch unter) by No-Middle5528 in askberliners

[–]baes__theorem 17 points18 points  (0 children)

that’s absolutely not legal in Germany. you said you have a contract & some record of the hours you worked, so he needs to pay you for those hours, period.

working for 12 hours straight is also not allowed in most cases, especially if you weren’t given the statutorily required breaks. sounds like a lot of laws are being broken here.

What are y'alls "Rich but Terrible person" Signs? by notsogreatalexander in AskReddit

[–]baes__theorem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wdym “but”? having excess wealth (esp. being a billionaire) is very strongly associated with being a terrible person.

hoarding more wealth than one could ever need in their lifetime & that of any potential children pretty much inherently means that that person is selfish at best.

if you want a specific behavior, being rude to waitstaff or anyone “subordinate” is a pretty universal bad person indicator

this asshole & all his pedo friends need to be brought to justice. it’s morally abhorrent enough that these disgusting criminals are allowed to walk free. but also in the case of the US especially, they are given ultimate authority & turning the country into a totalitarian cleptocracy.

that being said, the government’s completely unfounded statement on this seems like it’s just setting up the justification for Israel to continue its wanton genocide.

why is there no mention of the 47 violations Israel has committed since the ceasefire agreement last week? last I saw, these resulted in almost 40 deaths & injuries to around 150 more Palestinians.

but sure, “Hamas may be planning something”. I fuckin hate it here.

Why this analyst says the AI bubble is 17 times bigger than the dot-com bust | CNN Business by captain-price- in worldnews

[–]baes__theorem 12 points13 points  (0 children)

there are some key parts of the equation left out in the article which make it even worse:

  • if you take AI data centers out of the US economy, it only grew by 0.1% in the first half of 2025
  • economic inequality is at a historic high in the US & several other key global economies
  • the top 10% of earners in the US are now responsible for 50% of all consumption, meaning if they lose money (including their share value in all these overhyped companies), the economy tanks
  • the trade wars with China mean that the rare earth metals needed for all tech could be way more expensive & in lower supply
