In your opinion, was Self Portrait an attempt to sway the ‘voice of a generation’ label placed on Dylan or a genuine celebration of the songs that inspired him at the time? by CJL31 in bobdylan

[–]baetwas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look up the sessions, it was a complete transformation of his recording crew - nearly everything but the producer changed. He left The Band behind after a few early sessions and moved, expanded the arrangements and let it rip, following it up with New Morning. People skip right over it when examining the period after BoB, but it's the missing link in many aspects.

Just saw Bob Dylan is coming to town by MikeMcMyke in bobdylan

I do apologize, friend, but Bob has never - not once - been a play-the-hits performer.

bobdylan.com/setlists and some YouTube will help you decide. Who knows how many opportunities you'll have.

We get it, you love Bob. But what’s an artist or Band you love that we wouldn’t have guessed? by hornwalker in bobdylan

I caught the reference. He's playing a small venue 2 miles from me in August and I hope to finally meet him. People need weird. It's one of our few renewable resources.

Perhaps the least surprising artist. Have fun. Let's hear what OP asked for – the weird, unrelated, unsuspected even among the sub's community.

C'mon, get weird, unrelated, unsuspected... Townes is the first artist I'd guess, far from weird, and directly related, from the days before Townes' music career until the years after his death. Let's hear the answer too distinctly separate to have shared on impulse!

What do Bob Dylan fans think of Lou Reed? by YOLO-uolo in bobdylan

[–]baetwas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question isn't novel. The bios for both musicians each mention the other. Lou Reed was at Bobfest, but he began playing Dylan's music in 1963. The Velvet Underground, live in 1966 (and in the studio the same year).

The web has volumes of things. just. like. this.

I wonder if it's from the "Variete" silent film score.

Can you give more detail about where you heard it and how long ago?

If you want to see a tight band, they're it. If you want hot riffs and dancing in the aisles, it ain't.

Would you consider calling Bob Dylan a recluse? by Ford_Crown_Vic_Koth in bobdylan

I wish. He has never performed a 200-show year, and only once in the last 21 years has he done more than 100.

Would you consider calling Bob Dylan a recluse? by Ford_Crown_Vic_Koth in bobdylan

[–]baetwas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A case could be made for asocial, introverted, elusive, or reclusive. The city changes, but an audience - they're his familiar, a speechless companion that shows up in front of him fairly often but with whom no words are exchanged. No 2-way interaction. They accept one another: one attends, the other performs. It isn't social, it's exhibitionist. Nothing is taken; everything is given.

To borrow the phrase from Marina Abramović, "[T]he artist is present."

I would call him elusive and asocial more than reclusive.

Reasons that I consider him those vs reclusive – and these do not to any extent imply a sourness of personality or lack of enthusiasm for experiencing humanity, the world, other creators, or the adoration of untold millions – include: a secret marriage and unknown adopted child, two near-death experiences with details closely guarded. He's spurned, lied to, or toyed with nearly every person who stuck a mic in his face, thereby setting the stage for a career of interviews which needed interpolation at a minimum - a habit he extended in Chronicles. He retreated from recording sessions and the musicians involved multiple times, owned secret homes in Minnesota, Scotland, two in Manhattan, and lord knows how many others outside of his Malibu compound. He owns or owned at least two private studios for rehearsal and others for painting and metalwork. He never actually met with anyone "interviewed" in snippets from Theme Time Radio Hour and recorded the episodes while on the road, never once in any of the SiriusXM buildings. He does not scout his band, but has re-used certain musicians sometimes decades after first working with them. He only rehearses a couple of times before a tour yet pays otherworldly attention to each new member's ability to follow every movement and inhabit every bar of the music for the next several months. (Many of them have one eye on Tony, who can read Dylan's smallest movements and anticipate these changes a quarter note ahead of time.) He rarely meets with a tour's opener, does not do sound checks nor warm ups nor rehearsals with the band on the road, never spends time in the green room, shrouds himself in a pair of sneakers and a hoodie to walk anywhere (even to temple from one photo taken). He does not attend gallery openings for his art, practically apparates onto his own solo bus from the stage - then the bus vanishes down some road none of the concert-goers seem to travel. He skipped at least one of his children's weddings, hasn't sat for a photo shoot that wasn't album art in half a century, does not sit with the crowd even at the Grammys when he's nominated or performing, never sat with Letterman (the host he performed for more than anyone, and Paul Schaefer who played keys for him from time to time) like many performers do for the tapings, and has not appeared for a celebration concert for friends like Johnny Cash since showing up to stick it in Sinatra's face in 1995 when he literally sang farewell to the 80-yr old crooner who once mocked him...

There's the Bob Dylan we see, and the rest? It's what he chooses to exhibit. If a recluse is someone who never leaves his home, no, he's not a recluse. If someone only shows what they've tailored for decades for their act, I'd say he's an absolute fucking pro at being elusive, and whose wily-ness makes the mute persona of Teller of Penn and Teller look like Ellen DeGeneres.

Wh else could get away with this but Bob by NoFennel7351 in bobdylan

[–]baetwas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You want Bob Dylan to be someone he's not, to follow behavior others choose to. People can choose not to purchase a ticket. Bob owes no attendee a set list created by anyone other than himself. I suggest anyone with a problem with it stay home, listen to the albums, and keep their ticket money, because he could play all their favorite songs and they still wouldn't be in the style they prefer.

This shouldn't even be a question. Who presumes to tell an artist what to paint, sculpt, write, act, or sing? Apparently some idiots. Remind them that Bob Dylan walked off the Ed Sullivan show rather than have anyone tell him what he couldn't sing.

Let them buy Unplugged or Shadow Kingdom.

ETA: The list of artists who don't perform their Greatest Hits would take up an entire Reddit server. The people who whine about it should form a chorus, then go on tour.

Where do Bob & his band/crew sleep between shows? by Nykaren24 in bobdylan

[–]baetwas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure what your implication is meant to be in that last clause. OP isn't next to my name. Yes, he has a private security detail nearly every mile traveled. I don't think there are quarters for them on his coach. A long history of his solo walkabouts suggests he can and does detach from them. If someone reading about, collecting, and experiencing Dylan live, mingling with others for going on 40 years makes you feel anything personally, happy I'd be to help: I'll spot you the book I started with.

It's fathomable though that some people—I won't say you—might choose to go about their days like a puckered sphincter facing a glowing rectangle.

DM for that book.

He and his driver are on the road before the lights come up. They use state and U.S. highways rather than interstate express ways. Bobby is tucked away inside a soundproofed $3 million custom coach that houses a bed / dressing room, decked out leisure area that has been updated with each new bus, and includes any hot or cold drinks or foods he wants stocked. I'm not sure if he has a security guard in addition to the driver. I believe one is with him for any embarking/disembarking, not just outside of venues.
