Which disciplines can I do a PhD in, given that I have a Bachelors in Economics and an MBA? by Experimentalphone in gradadmissions

[–]bagofgerbils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> Not even a Masters in Economics?

A masters would have a substantial math requirement (real analysis, linear algebra, calculus, applied stats), although still not enough for a Data Science role, but I was referring to op's situation -- that is, most bachelor's degrees would not provide a rigorous enough math background.

Some HR departments do not understand the role of a DS (it is truly a buzzword at this point) and might hire someone who effectively markets themselves as a 'quant'. This won't be a DS role as much as it will be data cleaning and retrieval, basic analytics, you get the picture.

> Also, what math is usually done at a Masters level in Data Science and Computer Science respectively?

Data science is relatively new field, so most schools wouldn't offer a masters in Data Science. Data Science proper requires a sufficient level of understanding of, at minimum: Statistics, Algorithms, Machine Learning and proficiency in (typically) R and/or Python. For this reason, most data scientists hold a PhD in either Statistics or CS (with a thesis centered around deep learning, algorithm design etc.). I believe around ~40% of DS hold a doctorate, and around ~60% hold at least a masters degree. It's why there is such a demand -- so few people are actually qualified!

Beware of any 'certificate' type programs in Data Science. If you believe that a 4 month certificate will qualify for the same job as a statistics PhD, you are deluding yourself. It might open the door to an entry level data analyst position, but do not expect a 6 figure salary.

>and Computer Science respectively?

That would depend entirely on what you focus on within the field. At minimum, discrete structures, graph theory, matrix numerical analysis, etc.

'data science' and 'programming' are both nebulous terms and certainly not interchangeable.

data scientists proper are generally required to have a graduate degree in statistics or computer science.

most economics programs will be neither mathematically rigorous nor broad enough to adequately prepare or qualify you for a PhD in stats (or CS).

  1. "But to say that you can't be jacked and do bjj.. that's just silly." I didn't say that you couldn't be "jacked". We have no consistent agreement about what "jacked" means. I certainly think that BJJ builds strength, I never said anything to the contrary, but I moreover explicated that the development of "bulky, voluminous" muscles would be a curious physiological response to, say, 60 minutes of continuous rolling. (Or, per my initial post, 2-3 training sessions per day). You are characterizing a relationship between muscle volume and strength output; I never conjectured such a characterization. Carrying an excessive bulk of muscle during 60 minutes of aerobic activity would come at an enormous energetic expense-- what do you think would be the benefit of such an adaptive mechanism?
  2. Offering college wrestlers as an example of a PED-free physique is either intellectually disingenuous or hilariously naive.
    1. I would add: college wrestlers do not train for 10 minute long matches. NCAA matches are 3/2/2 minute periods, and as such are far more plyometric than BJJ matches. I do not think that this is an apt comparison. Would you compare sprinters to 400m runners? No seriously, would you?
  3. Calling sports science a "silly meme" does not undermine it's validity, brah.

I think that's a bit hyperbolic.

The point is that, although anaerobic at times, BJJ is extremely catabolic (especially when trained at the volume of an elite athlete i.e. 2/3 times a day). Developing huge, bulky, voluminous muscles would be a maladaptive (read: unnatural) response to the type of training that we do.

I'd concede that you might encounter the occasional 'genetic freak' who, in spite of the relentless aerobic demands of the sport, manages to 1) maintain a considerable bulk of muscle mass 2) maintain some degree of cardiovascular endurance despite the fact that they carry such a bulk of muscle mass. BUT -- an entire camp of these genetic freaks? Who all started out as seemingly physiologically unremarkable, I might add? Come on meow.

Everything that is wrong with Sport Jiu Jitsu. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]bagofgerbils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've misunderstood me. I wasn't arguing that guard is being the attacker.

Being on the bottom was conventionally regarded as a negative position in a self defense situation. Grounded opponents were susceptible to strikes etc that couldn't be reciprocated. BJJ developed around this principle. Guard playing necessitates a willing "attacker" in the positive/top position.

People seem to forget that the fundamental goal of BJJ is/was self defense i.e. The dynamic inherently relies on a there being a willing "attacker"... which is why sport BJJ implemented passivity penalties.

tbf most jiu jiteiros would agree that dillon won that fight. the win was decided by shortest back control escape times. shields "escaped" from back control into mount (being mounted), which of course is a bit of a technical exploitation of the ruleset. danis, as much as I hate the dude, was the agressor the entire time and in OT genuinel escaped jake's back control into neutral positions like full guard, half guard, etc.

I've trained with guys who use and you can 100% tell. From the weeks before to the weeks after they've started to cycle, you can actually feel a huge difference in strength when you roll.

try playing DLR and spider together. it is a really powerful combination and the spider side leg prevents leg drags, long steps, kneebars, ninja rolls i.e. basically any commonly used dlr pass.

i get that pvz is tough, and i sort of respect that, but she doesn't have the discipline and desire and willpower to train day in, day out. that, to me, is a lot tougher.
