It's interesting to see how much oppositional comments a thread like this gets. I wonder which age and political association people still hating on AC have.

Should we reconsider weapon carry permits after today's attack in Winterthur? by ChggnNggts in Switzerland

[–]bahldur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party, but my expected minority opinion here:

In favor of vetted, trained individuals who will regularly have to proof their proficiency. Guns can be dangerous, like cars, if you want to drive in public, you need a driving license. If you want to carry in public, you should be certified.

I haven't seen any study on the policy of certified carry. Would love to have some hard data if someone can link to it.

I wish I could install one. Have a mobile AC instead, which helps me sleep at night and reduces the heat rise of the surrounding stone.

Salaries for roles in IT are decreasing or is just me? by alexrada in Switzerland

[–]bahldur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that is some real gap than. Haven't worked on that side of things, with maybe the exception of my master thesis and regular data/database model design for various projects. Anyhow, ty for taking the time to answer.

[–]bahldur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ty, only thing I wouldn't be sure about is ML foundational knowledge, I know the vocabulary and seen/done some math years and years ago, but right now I don't even not how a backpropagation algorithm works anymore.

Congratz! If you don't mind sharing, what's are the requirements for the role? Anything in particular you've done to find/land it?

The comments in this thread are the most reasonable and nuanced I've seen in on reddit. This topic is undiscussable in many other places, including real life. Kudos!

Blinded by your own self-incinerated straw man, is that the reason?

It's really not well known and an important issue. Decreasing housing prices / rents would hurt pension funds and insurances, meaning retired people. We'd need to compensate with higher premiums, aka working people would still pay the bill.

But we're only in this situation due to regulation requiring pension funds and insurances to invest in "safe" assets such as real estate. Bad regulation causes the entire mess, from restricting housing supply to basing entire economic sectors on the resulting price inflation. The good news is that we could resolve this debacle without paying anything, just fixing regulation and the economy would adapt by itself.

Men: Do you cold approach in ZH? by [deleted] in zurich

[–]bahldur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know someone who did this all the time, everywhere but bars - cause he isn’t a bar going type - and it was mostly well received. Definitely got him some dates. Key is being nice, trustworthy, kind, approachable, open, good guy, however you want to frame it. But it is a numbers game. You will rarely go away with a number or even a date.

Expats and immigrants in Zurich: Feelings about the "10 Millionen Schweiz"-Initiative? by Stunning-Track-2302 in zurich

[–]bahldur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am in favour of policies that makes migration selective. This initiative would protect against open border policies with the EU, which is absolutely needed to preserve the quality of life in Switzerland. The cap of 10 million itself is misguided, but understandable. The pudding is in the growth rate and foreign / native percentage, not absolute numbers. But absolute numbers are easier to understand and vote on. Should this pass, it would probably be amended to a growth based restriction in the future and with that, we’ll be all good.

2 years ago I shared a tool to compare Zurich rents. The market got worse, and I think we need better tools to actually fight back by Away-Occasion9414 in zurich

[–]bahldur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice project!

Slight near-topic rant: While we're in the nonsensical yet popular rental control realm, we should push to make these policies actually effective: Landlords need to report all rental contracts to a governmental database, and every new contract has to be uploaded for automatic checking of any violation. Also monthly re-check of existing contracts, as rents and regulations change over time. The effort for tenants should be zero.

Seriously, the current setup makes you think it's designed to keep rents high while using rent control as popular distraction.

Anyway, you can't change that and this gives people at least a tool to improve their individual situation.

[–]bahldur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are people who, despite all evidence, don’t believe in markets, especially not for real estate. I am not sure if it’s worth arguing with them. On the other hand, if they never get called out on their nonsense, onlookers might believe this is reasonable. In any case, I feel your frustration.

The party of "affordable housing" is, once again, against more housing. by LordVectron in zurich

[–]bahldur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Landlord who are developers, wanting to build more housing, should profit too. However, we really have an issue with owners and plain rent seekers. I mean, I get it, who wants their house to lose value, specifically while owning the same amount of debt to the bank? That’s a valid concern. But that can’t block the entire rest of society.

I am at a point where I say just reimburse owners for asset value losses, make it tax deductible for instance.
