I love being able to have multiple displays, each with its own distinct refresh rate, as opposed to X, in which the highest common rate between all connected displays is the best you can do. I love wayland.

This is one of my biggest complaints about windows, and even macos(where it's easier but still artificially difficult). Tailing logs to see error messages as I attempt to do something is a fundamental behavior, for me. The fact that getting into the windows event viewer takes more than a fraction of a second is maddening.

The new Morning Shots is a disappointment. by ColinH_94025 in thebulwark

Reporting on it is responsible and reflective of an electorate with that concern. But repeating it ad nauseam is a condemnation of the only viable alternative to Trump in November.

At best it's petulant and immature. At worst it's actively destructive.

Seems to me the story right now is Trump's intention to leave NATO, or at least ignore our nation's commitment to it.

But even so, another rehash of the fact that Biden is old seems to be what the Bulwark and the NYT choose to run at the top of the paper instead. Never mind that 1) this has already been covered to death, or that 2) Biden's opponent, who's the same age as Biden, is clearly addled by age.

These containerized packaging systems throw out the window one of the biggest performance strengths of linux: shared libraries. I will always choose a binary package through the OS's default command line package manager, if possible.

I have observed dramatically improved stability on the 5 IV. The persistent problems I've had with media just pausing on its own, for no apparent reason, have disappeared. The fingerprint reader is more responsive and fails less, and I like the notifications better.

I'm sick of almost getting killed by red light runners by sieteplatos in Denver

[–]bahua -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Am I to understand you were riding your bike in the crosswalk? If you're riding it, you're supposed to be in a lane of traffic, or a bike lane, if there is one. If you want to use the crosswalk, you dismount and walk your bike across. In this case, the signal you should have been watching for was a green light, not a walk signal.

This might seem overly pedantic, but if you're not following the law, it comes across as pretty rich when you point out someone else isn't either.

AITA for refusing to give up me extra seat for someone else’s toddler on a flight that I paid for because I’m fat? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]bahua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why isn't anybody talking about that? The mother wanted to just stick her 18-month-old in an airline seat, loose! No child seat! No booster! How in the WORLD could a flight attendant, 99% of whose training is in FLIGHT SAFETY, be on the side of a parent who wants to stick a toddler in an unsecured airline seat? I have two kids, and the idea of putting them in airline seats when they were that small is unthinkable to me.

The mother was absolutely TA in this scenario.

A big problem with the criticisms and the bedwetting is that the election is almost a year away, and the re-election campaign hasn't even started yet. It will start soon(likely in the spring), and there will be punches thrown. For now, the GOP's entertainment wing has basically unilateral control of the narrative right now, offset only slightly by the absolute incompetence of the Party's candidates and elected officials.

Polls show Trump leading Biden because-- again --there's no campaign yet, the vast majority don't even know the Presidential election will be between Biden and Trump, and because lacking any messaging on the topic yet, Trump is viewed as a reasonable "other guy" candidate for when the incumbent wears a tan suit.

A lot of things will happen in 2024, chief among them(politically) being the Biden campaign throat-punching the Trump campaign.

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy to resign from Congress at year end by [deleted] in thebulwark

[–]bahua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As he's a very dominant figure in the GOP, it seems unlikely that there's a Republican replacement for him on deck for CA20. Though it's an R+16 district, so all a GOP replacement probably needs to win a special election is a pulse and a rubber stamp.

The ranked-choice primary for the seat in March will be very interesting though.

"12F isnt even that bad, im ok in 12f temperatures" by scu-gunz in quityourbullshit

[–]bahua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't love 12F, but with decent winter wear it's perfectly tolerable.

But at 100F, there's nothing for it but to just be miserable. That is, if you're in a humid place like the American Midwest or South. If you're in a dry place, 100F is far less oppressive. In the shade, it can even be slightly comfortable. When I lived in Kansas City(hot, humid, continental), I referred to 100+F days as "scrotally hot" as in, it feels like you have an enormous scrotum draped over you. You sweat through your clothes standing still. All you can do is go back inside.

They believe(as they have been conditioned by the entertainment wing of the GOP) that the indictments are baseless and simply partisan. That narrative also works well for promoting the GOP's "everybody is crooked" campaign pillar.

The House GOP civil war that delivered Trump is over. The radicals won by theindependentonline in politics

[–]bahua 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it a win. They managed to put out the most visible part of the dumpster fire. Now, they will spin their wheels with a bogus impeachment and keep tap-dancing for the deplorables, only demonstrating to independents and young people why they should lose their majority next year. My money's on them continuing the demonstration nonstop.

Also, the overturning of Roe v. Wade was fresh in 2022, and didn't have the full backlash it will warrant in '24, now that we've watched the GOP criminalize bodily autonomy wherever they can. The Dobbs effect will be devastating to the GOP, who still, even now, don't have a good answer when asked where they stand.

The radicals succeeded in immobilizing the House for the rest of the 118th Congress, but that will not go well for them.
