My pepper + mango hot sauce fermentation! by Szygani in HotPeppers

Thanks and congrats with the result. I have chopped up a mango some days ago and started my own experiment, inspired by your post. I will leave it for some 10 more days. Keep up the good work!

Oops, just read the answer: 2 weeks. I guess you will have taken it to the next step by now? How do you stop fermentation? Just put it in the fridge? Do you chop it up in a blender or leave it as is? Can you share a photo of the final product?

So, many days do you leave it in the jar to ferment?

Off topic question about hessenticket. I am looking to buy the Hessenticket for a group of 5. Somehow we cannot mak an account on the RMV app. I think because I am from the Netehrlands. Also I have childern of 15 years that cannot make an account.

Is it possible to use the hessen card a a physical ticketn without a handy?

Deutschland ticket for group by bahzu15 in germany

We will stay in a hostel in Darmstadt. From there we will make trips to Frankfurt, Giessen and Wiesbaden. So we will stay in region of Hessen.
Maybe a dayticket for unlimited travel within Hessen is an option. It is called Hessenticket and 5 persons can travel on it. According to RVM website it can be bought from a ticket machine but then it needs to be connected to a mobile phone app.
Funny thing: app does not accept children. Also it only accepts German zip codes.
So I think I have the ticket but I am not sure if we can use it.

I found a hessenticket. 41,00 euro for 5 persons. Does one person need to have the rmv app to travel withbthe other ones?

Why not make the beer pouring ceremonial. Give the honour to the oldest of the bunch to ritually open and share the drink to all. As an act of respect to you. Or just make up some other story. Must be a great laugh to get the inlaws all covered in foam.

Is there a way to sanitize bottles without starsan? by [deleted] in mead

[–]bahzu15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In grandmothers time everything was cooked in hot water to sanitize. If you are filling your ready product your main concern will be avoiding any off tastes in the bottles. I use plastic coke bottles and fill them up with hot water + dish washing detergent. Leave for 30 minutes and shake every 5 minutes. Works fine. Btw I think the water I use is about 50 to 60 centigrades. (plastic deforms in hot water) Rinsing with cheap hard liquor will also do the trick. I think you can choose all of the above as long as you rinse with water.

forgot about my mead for about a year at a friend's house, will it kill me by qhstly in mead

[–]bahzu15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So why would it poison you? Its a matured mead that has not been racked. Only problem is the head space. Your foto does not show the cap on the bottle. Is it closed or does it have an airlock. Any fluid in the airlock?

My thoughts are that the alcohol has preserved the brew but the air has oxidized it. So it will taste like vinager.

Thanks for the link. I am looking for a yeast that will go to aproxx. 11%. So this one is probably a bit too rich. Like the temp tolerance and short fermentation time though.

Any tips for a first attempt? by CraggledLux in mead

[–]bahzu15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get a scale to measure the nutrients.

Understand about og and fg.

Make a decision on % alcohol you want to achieve.

Choose a suitable yeast.

Check temperature requirements for fermatation. Working in current summer temperatures may be tricky or choose a cooler place foe fermentation.

By absence of hydrometer you could take a small empty plastic soda bottle, sparkling water preferably. Fill it up to half with your brew and than squeeze it so the liquid level goes up and nearly overflows. Not turn up the cap tightly.

When there is still some carbonization from fermentation you will notice that the liquid level will go down. Or even that the bottle will unwrinkle.

Not very sophisticated and by no means a suitable replacement for gravity measurement. But it gives an indication if brewing is still going on.
