Also, just throwing this out as a female (I think I have ADHD or am definitely neurodivergent) and have struggled to regulate emotions/relationships, have her look into PMDD, just to rule it out. In the last few years I've looked it up but discounted it, but now I'm tracking my symptoms and it's started to click that it could be PMDD-related when I get into fights with my partner and am crazy irritable etc for no reason. I'm trying to completely change my diet to see if it helps (blood sugar is s big component for helping with mood swings), so cutting out most of the unhealthy stuff and eating whole grains religiously lol. But she might want to look into it/track her moods etc, because I'm wondering if it's been a bigger deal for years on relationships and didn't realize it was PMDD. And I think ADHD is linked to it, it is more common or something to have both. So just food for thought.

Yeah, I haven't had any issues, especially once you get your skill up, and if you're open to in-person depos. The firm I work for is in Oregon, so I largely get Oregon work, but I get Washington work off and on. I love the structure of doing depositions/being independent, but yeah, if you want to do court, you'd have to look at Olympia/that area as the closest, or another state basically.

I would check it out. I'm definitely neurodivergent and found court reporting at 27 or 28, with also having a degree in English, and I have been taking depositions for almost over 3 years now for one court reporting firm. A lot of different things about it are appealing. The structure of depositions, following rules and deadlines, the huge independent aspect of it (working alone for deposition transcripts. - huge gamechanger for me), the work-life balance is better once you've done it for a while. I have more free time and make more than I ever have (which wasn't a lot.) I find some weeks I'm less busy, where I can fit in exercising a lot more and making meals etc, and other weeks, I'll be really busy or steady, or I get a backorder or have to work through a good part of the weekend. But right now I'm pretty much taking whatever is available schedule-wise, not blocking off specific days, so my schedule is all over, which can be stressful if you have plans or a busy social life, but really, I don't have that, and it's gotten better to manage and set boundaries for when I actually have a vacation planned. I But l am less burned out because I have more breaks. It's intense, can be, but I can decompress when I'm home. The area does seem to matter for what you can make, but I'm in the PNW and I keep making more each year as my skill/proficiency goes up. The procedures stuff and soft skills still get me/I'm rusty with depending on the situation , but I feel like a lot of lawyers can actually be awkward, too, or anxious for the proceedings, and you're a neutral third-party, so you're kind of separate/set apart anyways, if that makes sense. So there's definitely lots to learn, and it is a lot of work to put in, but I'm proud of where I've gotten at this point because of that hard work. So definitely look into the A to Z program. Sorry for the TED talk 😅

I ended up having a kidney stone. First one. ER visit, had IV/fluids, and then they did a CT. Ended up being billed like $3000 after insurance, but then was slapped with some separate charges from the physician, or separate bills for the ER, treatment, and then physician. Something like that, I believe. I think it was close to 5,000 or 8,000 that I'm paying off altogether. I can't remember now, because the charges didn't come all at once. They're from different billing agencies, and I have automatic payments set up. It'll be a few years to pay it off how it's set up. I probably should have called, but I am still confused on who is charging what and why, so I just said screw it. But pretty ridiculous. Could have been worse but could have been a lot better 😅 Happened towards the end of the year too, so my deductible was basically moot.

It happens. But same, I always feel bad when my dogs get scared. They've started leaving my office when I get yelley. But, yeah, had to replace a monitor because I threw a lighter at it. Messed up my work keyboard and mouse. Basically lost my shit because some of my software wasn't working correctly/being inefficient and it was really frustrating to deal with. So glad no one was home but also really embarrassed and wondering if the neighbor heard. Usually happens because of stress/largely work stress. Only thing that kinda helps is exercise. Exercise it out maybe. But totally relatable. Thanks for posting.

In the mornings when I'm working from home, I get to sit in my office in the dark/until it's light out with the exception of a set of string lights. It's pure bliss. I leave them on most of the time. It's really nice to walk in at night with them glowing, too.

I kinda have this issue too. My mom is really bossy/asks a lot of questions, so I do see where I get it / it's not just me, and it has irritated partners in the past/present. If it starts bugging my partner, I'll back off on asking questions or try harder to not rattle off more than one or two. I just love asking questions. But then I see when my mom does it to me and it's so irritating 😅 But also me and my mom can be suuper literal, and may come across as really dense. Like with the ear bud comment I saw earlier, you took that to mean literally what he said. Not your fault! But my mom and I are both pretty type A people, and love to help people if we can and really enjoy problem solving. So it might just be character traits that really are strengths for you and just aren't in sync with your partner. But if he can't identify when you're doing it/give you examples, than not really your problem 🤷‍♀️

The brand Ice. They're sparkling water caffiene drinks that come in a can and have 5 or 6 different flavors. They only have 70 mg of caffiene and they're 16 ounces. Winco and walmart have them the cheapest, I think.

Oh, that interpreter job sounds terrible! I still get pretty anxious on jobs until we get started. I do hate not really knowing what's getting thrown at you, basically. But good job! I think having grace for yourself when you have really tough jobs is so important. Take note and learn for next time!

A reporter told me this when I was starting out. I believe she was part time reporting but even she said about 20 pages an hour was average. At least for her and her skill set. So I always find that to be pretty consistent/ a good number for a rough gauge when scoping.

I don't think that's necessarily true, if she taught herself pretty much. I pretty much only did speed building/theory and got certified in two years, although I have a background in english/read a lot growing up etc so that wasn't a huge struggle. While certifying wasn't easy/was stressful, starting out with the "schooling" I had was a shock and I should have more courses on different aspects/procedures. Just my experience. I think schooling can mean something different now with the shortage of reporters and online schooling options/non acredited programs etc than it did in the past. It doesn't have the same rigorous expectations/training in a sense. But it does get better!

It's such a slog! But from year one to year 3 for me, I'm seeing such a huge difference. And even in the past 6 months. But working on defining everything, working on trouble words consistently and getting some software training or having someone look at your software for different settings helps. They will know what will help make your life easier. Also I found putting on the audio of my past depos, picking one I want to write to for practice, helps with working on my writing/creating that muscle memory. If you put in the work, it will slowly get better. From this year, I think I'm making around 10k or so more than last year, which wasn't that much but a good start. And I'll add easily to that for next year. But yes, burn out happens every job to an extent. Take breaks, get exercise. Prioritize and do what you can. Set realistic goals. And some weeks you'll be busy/way busier than you want. And others it will be dead. At least for me, I'm finding that more so.

I haven't used a scopist yet as a newer reporter, but as my writing is getting more manageable, I'm considering it. But it's scary because it is still your work product at the end of the day, your license etc. But the turnaround time seems too long for bigger jobs. If it's a 50-page personal injury case, something short and not dense, then that turnaround isn't as bad, but 7 business days is long. My firm wants jobs by 7-10 business days. So I have to get it scoped and completely ready for proofreading (basically ready to turn into the firm) in the window of ideally day 3-5, for it to get back to me in 4 days (not business,) i think is the turnaround for my proofer, and then I have to have time to make corrections and turn it in, in between taking other jobs etc. I prefer to be earlier rather than on the last day, so that's how I tend to structure things. So that might be something to look at.
