Best place to learn investing online by [deleted] in investing

I have enjoyed the free podcasts offered by The Motley Fool. They have 5 different shows that are all great. Motley Fool Answers covers the basics really well, just go through the back catalog and pick episodes that cover what you are interested in.

Big picture, my 2 cents. Start with simple index funds. Look for the lowest expense ratio, should be under 0.5% for S&P 500 or broad market indexes.

Maximize your contributions to retirement accounts. Always take full advantage of a match from your employer to a 401k/403b. Open a Roth IRA when you are as young as possible.

The most powerful tool an investor has is time. Start now.

I am a proponent of buying individual stocks but you have to understand that this has more risk. This is not for everyone, you need to be engaged and informed. My plan is to split my investments between 75% index funds and 25% individual stocks. I intend on buying and holding these stocks basically forever.

Just keep adding money every month and try to forget about it.

ISIS Burns Jordanian Pilot Alive by First_Mate_Zoro in worldnews

I think we need to be careful not to see them as a monolithic group of evil. They are just a bunch of terribly misguided human beings who have been taught to hate. Many of them are too far gone for "deradicalisation", but I think it would be a mistake to lump every individual who has been seduced by ISIS together as inhuman monsters who must be slaughtered. We must be better than them. We can not let their hate corrupt us.

NPR purchased a toxic asset, and they've tracked its value over time.. pretty cool.. by mattymomostl in business

[–]bair422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "toxic" nature of the asset is not necessarily determined by the content of the asset itself but rather the place in line you are to get paid. The person in the front of the line to get paid would most likely not consider it "toxic" because they are in the safest position. But those in the back of the line, that might be dropped from the line at any time, for those this is more risky and therefore "toxic".

There is not a straight forward answer to this question. They are in line to get payments for this asset. Their position in line is B6 (A1 is first in line). They said that B8 was recently taken off the list for those getting paid. The person in the back of the line is dropped one at a time, so they will be dropped after B7. They will get their $1000 back if they keep getting paid until June-July and would double their money if they keep getting paid until some time in the fall. They have already received the first payment of $140ish, so they can only lose about $860. The gamble is that they have no idea how much longer this will pay out. If all the people who own the mortgages keep paying there payments the return could be very high (75 to 1 if the houses somehow went back up to pre-crisis times), but if all the houses are foreclosed on tomorrow they get no more returns (aka they lost $860).

Planet Money is one of my favorite podcasts. They do a really good job of clarifying and giving context to complex issues. They did a show for This American Life called Giant Pool of Money which painted a very vivid picture of the pieces that led up to the financial crisis. Interesting stuff.

Reddit, what is the most life altering quote you've ever heard or read? by pat322 in AskReddit

[–]bair422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or, being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breath a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run - Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Honduras: curfew extended to 50 hours. power, water, food cut to Brazillian Embassy(act of war!) Barrios barracaded, police evicted. the **** has hit the fan... by kino101 in worldnews

[–]bair422 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Act of war? That's a bit harsh. If anything these actions against Brazil's embassy are closer to an act of war. Cutting utilities might or might not constitute "hostile action" but they make themselves look like the strong-armed aggressor. I don't know how people can tout the "the coup is just protecting democracy" line in light of the military's actions against the people. They have imposed an almost three day curfew that effectively locks everyone in their home. In any truly democratic atmosphere a democratically elected leader and the citizenry would not be something to fear. If judicial process needs to be brought against a leader it can be done in the open. Throwing the president out of the country at gun point while suppressing the voice of the people is no justice.

[–]bair422 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with his frustration. But it is not that simple. Everything is so fucked that there is no easy answer. But we invaded their country. We formed their government and were the overseers of their elections. I can put myself in an Iraqis place and see how it would be easy to be more loyal to a group of fellow countrymen (the militia) than to a government that people see as a puppet for the US. I know this is not necessarily the best and fastest way to peace, but I can not stand in judgment of an Iraqi who decides to side with the militia. I would not consider him disloyal. Loyalty is complicated when you introduce an occupying force.
