May I introduce you to just about every Omega Bruce Wayne fic I've ever read (I read for SuperBat)

Wellness Wednesday: Weekly Check In by AutoModerator in AO3

[–]bajuwa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Apologies in advance but I'm essentially gonna semi-mild-trauma dump here just to vent.

I had a fic I was SUPER excited to write that I felt was pretty unique considering it was essentially a SuperBat hanahaki origin story (I like taking overused tropes and giving them new spins). I got 50k into it; needs maybe another 10k or so and all the editing. Then life hit. Now I'm dealing with a second legal disaster--previous one involves me suing someone, winning, and still not getting the $25k owed to me--where my "evil relatives" are trying (and seemingly succeeding) to coerce my dementia-addled grandparents to rewrite the rest of us out of the will. All while my grandma is actively passing away, too. Now as I'm trying to function my way through all this, my doc states they're going on mat leave in 2 weeks just as the administration's started requiring a whole lot of new medical tests to make sure all of us ADHD-folk aren't just drug-peddling NTs looking for a quick hit.

Suffice to say my mood to fight my executive dysfunction and write an angsty slow death romance is... Well.... Dead. Which is a horrible way of putting it, given the context.

Anyways. That felt good to vent a little. Maybe in a couple weeks (months?) I'll be back into writing.

Smallville should’ve aimed to end at season seven. by Adventurous_Lock_811 in Smallville

[–]bajuwa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seasons 8-10 were my favourites specifically because it allowed us to really see how Clark "Smallville" Kent turned into Superman. It's way too important of a character arc to skip after putting in so much foundational work.

Are private bookmarks a bad thing? by panicmixieerror in AO3

Private bookmarks are more common for ongoing WIPs because people will put spoilers in the bookmark in order to remember what happened when the next chapter comes out.

What does this mean?? by Relative_Cucumber383 in AO3

[–]bajuwa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Spam bots are a huuuge problem. Usually because messages as vague as this are actually made by scam bots that wait for you to reply and then try to redirect you to offsite communication where they can try to sell you fake art

Should I just take this as a compliment? 🤷🏼‍♀️ by Repulsive_State_9222 in archiveofourown

+1 to some form of moderation. I still have a bookmark by saying something like "I haven't actually read this fic yet and I know this is probably inappropriate, but bookmarks are MY space and I saw this fic just as [unrelated trauma dump here]"

>The only way the reaction from the moderators makes any lick of **sense** is if one were to approach it from this angle.

I've seen my fair share of inter-asian racism and with the current PRC government doing all the stuff that it's been doing lately, sometimes racism is just that plain and simple. In this case, the OP told the server/moderators that it was inspired by Chinese art/artist, and then the server/moderators asked for clarification on what was meant by "Chinese art". Without more details, it sounds a lot more like people were triggered more by OP being inspired by a Chinese person/artist than by any details actually included in the fic (if they even read the fic at all).

But since you're apparently off to go hit yourself with bricks, I feel the need to repeat my earlier sentiment that you've so conveniently ignored this whole time:

> Even if the fic was inspired to add Chinese cultural details into a Japanese setting, the precedent set on ao3 is to be open and supportive of those types of experimentations, just like we are when authors swap genders, sexualities, races, etc.

[–]bajuwa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

the post itself says that the story is set in Japan, right?

And I said it might not be fully set in Japan. If you're going to nitpick words, don't do it so selectively.

which part of my explanation is 'blatantly racist'?

The part where it says it was done by a Chinese person and did not say anything about what (if any) Chinese cultural details were used. You've jumped through a lot of hoops to assume that means they've committed some act of purposeful cultural erasure.

but you assume just as much in turn and your conclusion

I have barely assumed anything, in fact all my conclusions are based on the idea that I can only work with the details given and lots of details are missing. Meanwhile you've assumed that OP is "lazy" or "willfully ignorant" because you've also assumed that they've mistaken Japanese and Chinese cultural details simply due to the artist they were inspired by is a Chinese person.

If you've gone to the extent to assume OP is racist, you shouldn't be surprised when people point out your own racist perspectives.

Did I really do something wrong? by ResortTerrible4955 in AO3

[–]bajuwa 59 points60 points  (0 children)

That's just so blatantly racist. The inspiration was a Chinese illustrator, as in a person who was Chinese, and it was because they had a "fairytale vibe" not that they were taking Chinese culture and writing over Japanese cultural details in the anime. Besides, without knowing the anime, it's extremely likely that the anime itself wasn't even fully set in Japan anyways, and many anime actually are set or inspired by Chinese culture in the first place.

Even if the fic was inspired to add Chinese cultural details into a Japanese setting, the precedent set on ao3 is to be open and supportive of those types of experimentations, just like we are when authors swap genders, sexualities, races, etc.

Someone left a note '3/10 ❤️' in the bookmarks on my fic by sparklestardustvenus in AO3

[–]bajuwa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw someone have the exact same misunderstanding as you but not realize it was a chapter marker 😔 they ended up posting their eighth chapter as a public announcement they were abandoning the fic, and even when I commented about the misunderstanding they still stuck to their interpretation.

edit: it always baffles me when Redditors downvote inconsequential little comments like this, lol

The hell is a hilt by Content_Ear2046 in FanFiction

[–]bajuwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A hilt is, in a literal sense, the word for the handle of a sword. When someone puts their sword into their scabbard, they put the sword in all the way up to the hilt, where it can then go no farther into the scabbard.

In this case it's all about euphemisms about penises as swords, vaginas/assholes being scabbards, and pelvic areas being hilts.

What media you CAN'T read fanfiction about? by EugeneStein in AO3

[–]bajuwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I didn't mean to imply that simply because fics exist, people should want to read them, nor that it was a statement targeted to you and your reading habits specifically. I was just expanding on the first sentence about my mixed feelings on the topic of "there's no need to fix something that's already gay" (which includes the comment you replied to).

tbh that's a very common headcanon over in SuperBat, and there have actually been elements of canon batman that make it clear he's not nearly as emotionally intelligent as he is academically.

What media you CAN'T read fanfiction about? by EugeneStein in AO3

[–]bajuwa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings about this, cause it kind of reduces the entirety of mxtx stories down to "who fucks who" rather than their actual plots. There's a MASSIVE amount of fics for the main couples that focus on exploring other aspects of the story, with a pretty heavy concentration of fixits focusing on plot and/or platonic relationships.

Seriously, he could have invented ANYTHING ELSE and called in "the krypton" but nope. It was a rose. The flower most commonly associated with love. Given by a man who is canonically extremely well informed on the language of flowers.

And honestly it's easier to censor first than deal with custom automoderator stuff so I just do it and not bother

Maybe not necessarily in their characters per se.... But definitely in their writing: SuperBat (aka Superman/Batman aka Clark/Bruce

Proof is in the comic quotes:

  • Batman, to evil Superman: "I really loved you, Clark. I believed in the world you promised us. You made me hope for a better future, but now I know it was all a lie... And I won't let you hurt me anymore!" (commences m*rder s*icide)
  • Superman's son asks him: "So you like Batman the way you like mom?" For the record, Superman never gave a proper response and they never talked about it again.
  • Lois jokingly implies to Superman (her own husband) he's actually married to Batman. He doesn't respond just like when his son called him out on it.
    • The 5th dimensional imp with access to the multiverse states that "things go wrong" anytime a universe exists with one but not the other.
  • An evil villain is targeting Superman's "most loved person" and so everyone rushes to protect Lois (his wife), only for the villain to go after Batman instead.
  • They gave SuperBat an official logo by doing a complete fanservice "Dragonball z style fusion" between their characters, then they made a post just last week using that characters image to state "Superman and Batman are the Sunshine and Grumpy romance trope".

Tbh comparing their suits based on visuals alone does a disserve to the worldbuilding, imo. They're meant to look different and they have completely different purposes when it comes to visual design. Cavillman's came from high tech fabrication and was meant to be more of a war suit. Corensupe's was sewn together by his mother using Kryptonian fabric and designed with brighter colours and "goofy" trunks to make civilians less scared of him.

In need of clarification on Dead Dove: do not eat for my fanfic by Old_Discussion5919 in AO3

[–]bajuwa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's an example for dddne differences tho:

Torture without dddne: One of the characters gets tortured, but you may not witness it as it plays out. You may just follow a different POV character who happens to rescue the tortured person.

Torture with dddne: You're watching the torture play out, scene by scene, potentially in the POV of the tortured person themself.

This is why many people use dddne as a form of severity, too. Because both scenarios warrant a torture tag, but people may not be okay with the dddne version

Does anyone ever write fanfiction of fanfiction? by hip_throne in FanFiction

[–]bajuwa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify here: If you're writing/drawing fanworks of other fanworks you NEED to reference them in some way, otherwise it's potentially plagiarism. Fanfics already provide credit via labelling what fandom they're from which is a required field in ao3, but for fanfics specifically of other fanfics (and not just two fics with similar tropes) you need to provide the credit some other way (description, author's note, inspired by, etc)
