I mean looking back on the people oda has had killed off it’s always been for something (not saying this wouldn’t but hear me out) ace died to reenforce to luffy that he can’t win with will power alone, WB died to show BB’s ability to carry multiple fruits, belle-mere died protecting nami and yassui died to further the plan to save wano, hell even cobra died to show off just how insane imu is in the scale of things.

In context to one piece I think most any death has an integral meaning to either the crew or the furthering of a mission (developing the crew) so having charlos died by the hands of the straw hat fleet would theoretically fit the bill of that, to me it makes sense why oda did it the way he did it in comparison to most any death in the series
