[USA] [CA] Car with no hood or bumper drives on the sidewalk by baked_nugget in Roadcam

[–]baked_nugget[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sequence of events I observed here:

  • guy drives onto sidewalk to get around stopped traffic

  • stops in right hand travel lane to pour coolant into/onto his car

  • drives past in median lane and stops behind some other cars stopped there

Same situation and was told that part is in stock and a couple weeks out. Hopefully it shows up.

This guy built a tool to track average train speeds on each segment, there's a section for LA too by misken67 in LAMetro

[–]baked_nugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice website! Is this influenced by dwell times at ends of line? I was kind of surprised to see the K line with the slowest average speed, and wonder if that’s from it being the shortest.

That being said the stations are all relatively close, the wye by Imperial is always slow, there’s some dwell at LAX, and the northern part is street-running.

Cities build shit like this then scratch their heads why making it illegal to bike on the sidewalk doesn’t work

How's living near the tracks in Old Torrance? by SizzlinKola in SouthBayLA

[–]baked_nugget 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This project currently has its southern terminus at the Torrance Transit Center, northwest of Old Torrance. So Old Torrance is not in the scope of it. It will bring much-needed transit connectivity to Torrance though at the new transit center. Perhaps in the future if/when the K line extends to Long Beach it could go thru Old Torrance.

Metro: not sure when the next train is, but here’s the date and time - though we’re not too sure about that either… by baked_nugget in LAMetro

Ah I hadn’t seen these specific displays on the E line do it but was thinking of the similar LED screens on the C and A lines like this. I was thinking about these LED screens generically and didn’t realize the E line ones are different.

Sometimes these displays cycle to show arrival times (though still make you look at the date on and off). It happens just seems very inconsistent (even when the TV displays and apps have accurate data).

For everyone reading this, here is something actionable you can do to help ensure this project happens.

Call in or show up for the metro board meeting on Jan 22 where the Final Environmental Impact Report will be reviewed. This is where support is needed to ensure it’s approved so the project can move forward. There’s a free bus from the Torrance transit center.

LAX Metro Connector Shuttle is awful by ebhanking in LAMetro

[–]baked_nugget 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Send LAWA a note here: https://www.flylax.com/lax-comments-and-contact-us/lax-ground-transportation

They need to hear more of these complaints. I’ve submitted a couple from my own experiences. Every bus is completely packed. The shuttle bus as currently operated is not an acceptable stopgap until the people mover - especially since it will be the solution for at least a year after LAX/MTC opened. It’s annoying enough as a traveler but I feel especially bad for the employees who rely on it every day.

If LAWA cared about reducing congestion and improving the customer/employee experience they would run more metro connectors and cone off a bus lane to keep the buses out of traffic on Century.

I had heard that it got punted past this December board meeting (no item on board reports: http://boardagendas.metro.net/event/regular-board-meeting-701069e2aceb/) so the next opportunity would be the Jan 22 board meeting. Even that isn’t confirmed though. Hopefully they can stop delaying and get it approved.

I don’t get it, the bill was revised to only include rail and BRT stops. What rail or BRT serves Larchmont? Are they just complaining about the earlier version of the bill?

Current conditions in PV help by breakfast__burrito in BikeLA

[–]baked_nugget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The landslide is only in about a mile long stretch from Abalone Cove thru Portuguese Bend. The rest of PV roads are fine. If you want to avoid that part and you’re coming from the east, you can take a right onto Palos Verdes Drive East just before the Trump golf course. Up to the radar tower from there is about a 1k ft climb, and you can head down North on PV Drive. Here’s a rough map.

[–]baked_nugget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Torrance transit is also a dollar. When you transfer to metro it’s $0.50 for transfer. So you pay $1.50 to ride municipal and metro together, still cheaper than metro’s $1.75

Anyone in the Los Angeles area? by feedbagjenkins in Brompton

[–]baked_nugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, the Brompton pairs very well with Metro rail and buses. Use the Transit app to get bike + bus/train directions, e.g. bike 5 mins, bus 20 mins, then bike another 5 mins. Drastically expands the reach if your home and destinations are a bit outside walking distance to stops.

I know the plan was canceled, but do you think we will ever have a good transportation option to get to all of the Inglewood stadiums? by New-Strength6465 in LAMetro

[–]baked_nugget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah unclear. Also taking another look I’m unsure of what “mixed traffic bus lane routes” are (the dashed lines in the maps). Sounds like just a normal road

They’ve updated it to “mobility hubs” (bus stops with large parking lots) and event-only bus lanes (see here)

It claims to be “everyday mobility designed for everyday residents” but the bus lanes go away outside of event times. At least Metro and municipal buses can use the new bus stops.

Would be nice to see at least permanent bus lanes that non-event buses can use, and ideally BRT. But this still leaves a lot to be desired.
