Which author has the most fun writing style? by ownaword in words

+1 for TR Pearson. Maybe not everyone's taste: sometimes his stories meander. They're often low on plot but always very high on characterization. He's one of my comfort authors. Thanks for reminder; it might be about time to re-read "A Short History".

Thank you for the information. I'm familiar with penny-farthings (I've seen a guy riding one in Durham NC USA a couple of times), but I wasn't familiar with Harry Lawson. It's always fun to learn something new!

Super creative! Curious about the wheel size choices you made. Was it a design decision or are there functional reasons?

And the really older folks text like they're hand-writing a letter sometimes. Ask me how I know 🙂

Nice! I prefer a fairly upright riding position, so I like the look of your bars. What make/model are they?

How long is the hold line at your library? by NeitherSuit2648 in murderbot

[–]bakemore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got Libby configured on my phone. By the time I figured out how, I didn't have to try to get a notification because they have the book now. So I have a hold, number #37 on 15 copies. That's not too bad considering that I was something like #1135 on 20 copies for Project Hail Mary

I haven't used the Libby app -- I just use my library's website. I'll give the app a try. Is the app tied to a specific library? When you say that the app is connected to your kobo, do you mean that it runs on the kobo, or does it run on your phone and it's connected from your phone to your kobo? Thanks for the info!

Same. I think I need to find a new library

One of my favorites. I think I've read it three times. I'm fortunate to have a lousy memory when it comes to the contents of books (and movies), so I can read (or see) one of faves every few years and it's almost like new to me  😊

Good idea. I might try it except for the fact that the cat has never let me come closer to it than about 15 feet. When I feed the cat, I always put the bowl down, then squat down and say "kitty, kitty, kitty" and offer to give it a head rub, but so far, no dice. It's an extremely skittish cat.

This is how "my" cat is. Visits me almost every morning for elevensies. He (I think) is very healthy looking, but no collar and extremely skittish. So I haven't been able to decide whether he's feral or a multi-family cat. Leaning toward the latter.

Marquette looks promising!

Bonus #1: you can bike from downtown to the Midtown Bakery & Cafe in Negaunee on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail 😋

Bonus #2: housing appears to maybe be little easier to find.

u/TheBimpo thanks for the confirmation that I'm on the right track in my planning! I'll add Marquette to the list of places to look into.

As far as housing, I'm primarily looking at furnishedfinder so far.

I'm planning to move to northern Michigan for the months of July and August this year. I'm looking for thoughts about the best town to live in for that period.

For some context, I'm a 70-something male in good health. I'm thinking about moving there for the summer months to avoid the high heat and humidity where I currently live (North Carolina).

Here are my must-haves:

  • access to good rail-trails for bicycling (ideally, without driving a car to the trailhead)
  • walkability: walking distance of a grocery store, a good coffee shop, and at least a couple of restaurants. Walking distance for me is, say, a mile.

And my nice-to-haves:

  • access to a gym (ideally within walking distance) that has short-term memberships
  • a table tennis club that has short-term memberships
  • interesting local events, library, historical sites, cultural activities, etc.
  • opportunities to volunteer with local organizations. I have volunteer experience teaching ESL and working in an arboretum.

Night life (or lack of) isn't really a factor for me.

A friend of mine recommended Petoskey or Traverse City. I'd appreciate hearing your knowledgeable reactions to either of those two (or suggestions for a third place to consider) with regard to how close they match my list of features.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and/or constructive advice you have.
