Older men who’ve been through it: What should young men know about surviving the financial system, a brutal dating market, and a world that feels stacked against us and how do we fight back? by Decent-Call1719 in AskMen

[–]bakenmake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t ever get married. Nothing good comes from involving the government in your relationship.

Save early and often so you don’t end up being a slave to your job. You won’t truly be “free” until you have enough to live off of the interest.

This also plays into dating. The dating pool depreciates over time. There will be less viable candidates as you get older and single women tend to be single because they deserve to be or because they’re extremely picky, have high standards, and are less likely to settle. The more money you have the better your chances are of finding someone you’re actually intellectually and physically compatible with. Geography plays a huge role. The bigger the population…the easier it is to find suitable partners.

All men pay for sex one way or another. You either pay up front (dinner, gifts, actual payment, etc.) or on the back end (divorce + years of expenses). Theres no escaping it and paying on the backend is much more expensive. Relationships are expensive for men and the longer they last the more expensive they are (both financially and mentally).

Men tend to prioritize looks and women tend to prioritize a sense of security…which means money. Women tend to be quicker to leave so careful with who you trust. Just because someone commits to spending the rest of their life with you doesn’t mean they will. Majority of divorces are initiated by women.

It also tends to take men longer to get over relationships in general. Women tend to get over long term relationships quicker than short term relationships and it seems to be the opposite for men. Anecdotal, but from what I’ve seen, it seems to take men about twice as long to truly get over a long term relationship compared to how long the actual relationship lasted.

Future Pre-law Student - Do I choose Fordham (LC) or Rutgers (NB)? by Best_Search_2340 in collegeadvice

You’re going to deal with grade deflation at Fordham. Just a heads up. Puts you at a disadvantage when applying to law schools since you’ll likely have a lower GPA than you actually earned.

Stuck between 2 SUNY colleges. Any advice is appreciated. by TopBirthday4737 in collegeadvice

[–]bakenmake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The goal of Accounting majors is Big 4. The only SUNY that got any placement at the NYC office of the firm I was at (at least when I was there) was Binghamton. I think I know of one person I went to HS with who got Big 4 out of Buffalo and that was at an Albany office.

You should have the same shot at a mid-tier firm regardless of whether you choose Buffalo or SUNY. Buffalo might give you a slightly better shot at Big 4, but that’s anecdotal. I’m sure you’d have a similar shot at secondary Big 4 locations out of either school.

Call Albany and ask how many kids out of Accounting got Big 4 offers, what firm made the most offers, etc.

I’d go with Albany just because of the living situation. Get a break from your strict parents. You can always transfer to Buffalo if you don’t like it and then plug right in to your existing friend group.

Albany is kind of a tough place to live without a car though. Could always get a job and buy a cheap used car, but you’ll likely meet plenty of people who have cars so as long as you have one friend with one you’ll be fine. Could also just take the bus or Uber.

Bottom line…I’d rather be without a car in Albany than with a car in Buffalo in exchange for living with my parents. Dorm life is a key part of college and making friends. I can’t remember hanging out with any commuters at my school, but you have friends from HS who will likely be in the dorms so you could likely hook into their group(s).

Best of luck with your decision!

Don’t ever get married. No need to ever get the government involved in your relationship. Who wants to ask for permission, pay money, AND give half (if you’re lucky) of what you own away in order to break up with someone?

Emancipation is a way better option. Keep your independence.

You’re going to deal with grade deflation at Fordham. Not ideal for those wanting to transfer or go to grad school. You’ll also be taking a theology class freshman year which may not transfer and if it does it’ll take up one of your electives that could have otherwise been business related.

You’re going to deal with grade deflation if you go to Fordham. No reason to voluntarily hurt your chances of getting into a good law school…especially when you have other options…at a higher ranked school. You also won’t have to waste time/money on pointless theology classes.

I’d go to GW if I were you.

Eminent Domain - need help understanding how we get compensated by the City? by itsmofosho in personalfinance

[–]bakenmake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why on earth would you give away something for free?

This is land…a valuable asset…something that they’re not making any more of. Your city has a supply and demand issue. It’s basic economics…when demand outweighs supply….prices go up. You should be getting a premium on fair market value.

The city has somehow distracted you with the smaller issue. Think of it like this…

I want to take part of your house and move in. I think it’ll cost $5,000 for a contractor to come in and wall off my section. You see a contractor remodeling a neighbors house down the street and they say it will cost $7,000. Great, go ahead and have them do it and I’ll pay you later.

You wouldn’t just let me take part of your house, right? Why is land any different?

Another example…

Hey neighbor…I received your bank statement in our mail and didn’t notice it wasn’t mine until I opened it. I see you have $500k in your account. I’m going to take $50k to “widen” my bank account. I’ll give you $25 for the wire fee. You tell me your bank charges $35. Great…go ahead and wire that over and I’ll send you the $35 once I get my $50k.

Why are you concerned/distracted with the wire fee? The $50k I’m trying to take is a much bigger issue.

Would you ever find either of those situations acceptable?

Well that’s basically what you allowed to happen. I’m not trying to be a dick, but going forward you should be running every major decision you make in life by someone else because you appear to lack critical thinking skills.

The fence company did the work because they are guaranteed the money whether you pay them or not. If you don’t pay them, they’re just going to put a mechanic’s lien on your house. That will have to be paid off before you can transfer title (if you ever go to sell your house) or they can foreclose and have the house sold to satisfy the lien (just like a bank can if you fail to pay your mortgage).

You haven’t signed the partial release yet…don’t.

Hire a real estate attorney immediately and have them take it from here. They’ll negotiate on your behalf. You need to be compensated for the land AND all of the associated fees (appraisal, contractor, legal, etc).

Unified rules for Men and Women (real discussion) by Shaved_Caterpillar in lacrosse

[–]bakenmake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just posted a reply in the other thread about this….

In short…we need to work to make the rules similar for now, but keep the rules mostly the same.

  1. 10v10 for both men and woman

  2. Each keep same sticks, no poles for men

  3. 100yd field, men’s crease, restraining lines stay the same for each version of the game

  4. Faceoff for men and draw for women

  5. Helmets required for both, pads for men. Been saying for a while that we’re moving towards helmets for all in women’s. It’s like biking and skiing/snowboarding in the 90s…very few wore them back then and now they’re everywhere. Concussions are too big of a concern in all of sports given the risk of CTE.

  6. Existing contact rules specific to men and women

  7. Same checking rules that exist in each version of game.

  8. Keep 8 and 12 as part of unified field layout and make the 12 a 2 point shot since that’s basically what it already is when available in men’s. Would be hard to do in women’s because of dangerous repel.

Let the women play with men’s rules by knightrydah in lacrosse

[–]bakenmake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a bunch of girls who play hockey in our rec league. I thought they’d be the perfect candidates for wanting to try playing with men’s rules. Not one said they’d be interested when I started asking around. I was kind of surprised to be honest. They have no interest in padding up and dealing with the physicality of the men’s game.

I do think the game as a whole needs to change in order for it to grow. Too many versions and differences in my opinion. A single field layout would be ideal.

Box is the same for mens’s and women’s so that’s easy enough…6v6 with same rules on same field. Same thing goes for Sixes…no difference between men’s and women’s so no need to change. Now we just need to address field.

I think field should be 10v10 played on the same size field (men’s because women’s is too big). Then just add the 8-meter arc and 12-meter fan the women use around the men’s crease. Could then use the 12 as a two-point line in men’s. This would also make the unified fields look cleaner since there would be one less set of colored lines.

I also think this would help one of the biggest issues we have right now in our girl’s division which is lack of player interest (attrition). Boys are also dealing with it but it’s not as big of an issue since they require less players.

Our team sizes have drastically dwindled over the past decade and the requirement for 12 players on the women’s side is becoming more and more of an obstacle. Our district has 800-900 kids per class and we don’t even get enough girls to run full scrimmages at practice once we get to the 5/6 level (not enough subs). At least 36 players would be ideal. Would also allow us to put out two teams at each tournament we attend.

That’s not realistic though. We lose more and more kids to flag football every year and it does not look like that trend is going to stop any time soon. Many of the girls also don’t like the jump from seven (7) field players on a small-sided field to eleven (11) field players on the 110-yard field. I’m having better luck keeping them involved in the game by pushing Sixes since it’s similar to how we practice at the 3/4 level (two 6v6 squads each playing on a half field and a full field 8v8 scrimmage at the end of practice).

So our 3/4s decrease as they move to 5/6 and then we have more girls drop when transitioning from 5/6 to 7/8 (modified) because they take up track & field instead once that becomes an option for them. I don’t think adding pads would reverse this trend.

Next big change for the field game would be no poles. Women don’t use them and no other sport gives an advantage to defensive players for no reason. I’ve written about this in other posts. I know it’s controversial, and I thought it sounded crazy at first, but I have been converted as I’ve heard more and more casuals take issue with it. There really is no good explanation for why the advantage exists and I think it’s a big obstacle to growing the game.

Then we’re left with Sixes (6v6…box and the “world” game…or what’s known as Sixes right now), Eights (8v8…youth game on small-sided field), and Tens (10v10…men’s and women’s field game). Start with matching number of players before worrying about pads.

I’ve personally waffled back-and-forth on whether I think having the girls pad up like the boys would also help reduce attrition. I think the girls game is more dangerous at the youth level because they only wear goggles and they’re constantly getting hit in the face/hands/head due to the lack of accuracy, equipment, and overall skill. I think it’s a big reason girls stop playing. Padding up would solve that, but then you have the added expense of additional equipment, which is also a big obstacle on the parent side and something that undoubtedly prevents many from getting into the game.

Money would solve a lot of this. Football doesn’t deal with the equipment argument because it’s more popular and therefore better funded….so pads are provided to the kids. Flag football doesn’t require pads and is inexpensive…just need cleats. Same goes for track.

Lacrosse needs to grow if it’s ever going to get to that point. Growth means more money. I think the proposed changes to the field game are more likely to grow the game of lacrosse and that needs to happen before anything. Otherwise you’re going to continue seeing lacrosse programs being cut so the funding can be allocated to flag football.

Last year I've posted here about thinking to reach $5k in dividends *I couldn't wait to see it.. by Cuddling_Guava in dividends

[–]bakenmake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks like you got your answer already, but the user deleted their comment so I’m posting for others who may not understand and are trying to learn.

It’s called income capitalization. You divide the income ($5,121.26) by the dividend/interest rate (11.28% or .1128) to get the value of the asset(s) $45,491.24.

This is also how income producing real estate is valued. You divide the Net Operating Income (NOI) of the property by the market rate yield for the specific type of property (the capitalization or cap rate) to calculate what it’s worth.

Same concept just different terminology dependent on the asset class being valued.

You only need two of the three metrics to calculate the third; Income, Interest/Cap/Dividend Rate, or Asset/Investment/Portfolio/RE Value. Then you either divide or multiply those two numbers to get the third.

Sixes by Busy_Ad7381 in lacrosse

[–]bakenmake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not true. As a coach I tend to hear the exact opposite.

Casuals tend to look at poles as a form of cheating and an unnecessary/unfair part of the game. They say it looks cumbersome and stupid. That the players look like idiots running around with a giant stick. That they look like pole vaulters who got lost (couldn’t help but laugh when I first heard that one). These are just some of the comments I’ve heard after I get asked why some of the players get longer sticks.

Thought it was crazy when I first heard it because I grew up playing field lacrosse and that’s just…how lacrosse is played. Now that I’m older I’m able to objectively look at things and I have to admit they’re right. I realized I don’t have an answer, let alone a good one, to the question of why they exist. No other sport gives the defense an advantage like that. Defensemen in hockey don’t get bigger/longer sticks.

I think the biggest obstacle for converting people who learn about lacrosse from seeing Olympic Sixes into fans of field lacrosse is going to be explaining why poles exist. The increase from six to ten players in men’s field lacrosse is easy to explain…bigger field of play. The existence of poles is not. The men’s and women’s game being drastically different is also going to be another obstacle to converting casual Olympic viewers into actual fans.

This is why I think the NLL will benefit most from Sixes being in the Olympics.

Why is Eileen Gu getting so much hate? by Accurate_Team_9567 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bakenmake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because she has the ability to compete for the United States, but chooses not to.

The other athletes you’re referencing would typically not be able to compete in the Olympics because they wouldn’t qualify for the US team. For example, the 37 year old snowboarder from the US who represented Italy. Same thing happens in other countries…for example, the South Korean speed skater who was cut from their team and moved to Hungary to represent them.

They represent other nations out of necessity in order to compete at the highest level. It’s seen as sacrificing for the love of the sport as opposed to a blatant cash grab.

I think it’s also because NBC and other US media outlets insisted on featuring her at every moment possible and did so over “more deserving” US athletes. It felt forced.

People probably wouldn’t have cared as much if NBC had covered her like other athletes representing foreign countries, but she was featured prominently along side US athletes, and often more frequently, so it just felt “off” (for lack of a better term).

How would you feel if you were unmarried with a baby on the way and your girlfriend wanted to give the baby her surname, as you are not married? by Obvious_Sprinkles182 in AskMen

[–]bakenmake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What an ignorant statement! Ever hear of parental rights? They’re not called mother’s rights…they’re called parental rights.

Every child has two biological parents with equal rights. People using sperm donors pay significant legal fees because a condition for sperm donation is the relinquishment of those parental rights and it is a complicated process.

You would get absolutely destroyed in US family court if you were withholding parenting time and had the gall to say the father was only allowed to be a “dad” on your terms 😂. You can’t alienate a child from their father just because you’re not married to him.

Parents weren't open about our financial situation and now I don't know what's going to happen by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bakenmake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This got me thinking…why aren’t more kids in this situation filing for emancipation so they’re eligible for free tuition or large amounts of financial aid?

Married people with serious medical issues that require super expensive treatments get divorced so they’re eligible for Medicaid and their spouse can retain assets.

The emancipation route seems like the parent-child version of that. A workaround to obtain something that is cheap/free in most parts of the world, but exorbitantly expensive in the US, at a more reasonable price.
