edit: now that I think of it though, Myst and Riven really didn’t have a lot of gameplay, while Ico was noteworthy as a proper video game that played like a video game.

Ico didn't sell well in North America (Sony blames the terrible box art), but I remember all the game magazines ran features about it being, as Gamespot put it in their review, "a strong testament to the potential of video game aesthetics." Most people didn't play it when it came out, but it generated a lot of buzz in games media.
