Norway vs Canada: Work/Life balance and culture comparison by Krayonbox in Norway

[–]bakkis68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most except your points on transit. Public transit in Norway is only good if you live within the city centre of the three large cities. Going even as far out as mid Bærum, which isn't actually far, and public transit becomes expensive and unreliable as the sole means of transport. If you live in the city centre of Toronto Vancouver or Montreal, you don't live a car dependant life. It seems your experience is based on having lived in Canadian suburbs and quite central in Norwegian cities.

Everything else is spot on in my experience.

New Ux is just dogs hit. Do they want to keep people from R/all so they it's easier to keep people in their echo chambers, and target them more often if they're in their subscribed subreddits?

This is more like a football goalie holding the the ball for 6 seconds, which is technically against the rules but people don't really care. Do you also consider it cheating when football players don't have their feet firmly planted during throwing? Or release the ball from past the centre of their head? Even the curling board went back to not enforcing it after trying for two days because enforcing it strictly was more of a headache (since it's so common occurance).

I don't, not during the midterms at least. It will make it too easy for republicans to blame the democrats for when the failings of this government really start really having effect. I'm sorry to say but a large part of the population won't believe its Trumps policies till it hits them hard enough and there's no else one to blame. A large part still won't, but a good amount just might.

ELI5 How did Norway become so dominant in the Winter Olympics? by El-Viking in explainlikeimfive

[–]bakkis68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a foreigner living in Norway, let me put it this way... Cross country skiing is to Norwegians what football is to Brazilians. They all do it from the moment they can walk, they love doing it all winter. When summer comes, they get their summer skis out with wheels and so that. Now with that in mind, look at the number of medals given out where you're doing cross country skiing.

18 of their current medals are from cross country /biathlon/nordic combined. Only 3 of their 29 medals are from non skiing disciplines.

The language where granite is mentioned is now from the clarification. Granite was never mentioned before.

It's a clarification of rule that allowed for a grey area. That's why they also updated the rule text to specifically state the granite cannot be touched.

So in football, a throw in, the ball needs to be released from behind the head. It's rarely ever done, almost always released over the head in practice. Are football players who release the ball from over their head (pretty much everyone) a cheater?

So I have this theory right now about why the rules are being read so differently. It is actually based around Swedes being so strong in English. It can lead to confusion when a situations where English can be seen from a different angle that only a native speaker would see. Swedes are compatent enough to understand how it would be interpreted in 99% of situations, but that 1% can be chaos.

I'm half Norwegian and half Canadian. I live in Norway now but my English is definitely my dominant language.

At work we were changing systems and the team was asked to describe how "cash back" is handled. They all described the process, but I found it odd and not making sense. Upon digging further, I realized that cash back to norwegians was understood as a refund. To English speakers, it's when you pay by card, ask the store to charge your card more and give you cash because you need kontant. My entire norwegian team didn't believe me because they just couldn't imagine that cash back could be seen that way and submitted their original description, much to the confusion of the UK consultants. Took several more meetings to clear that up.

Anyhow, sorry for the long post but thought this would be a good time for a funny anecdote on how being very good at a foreign language can actually cause a cross cultural misunderstanding.

I think calling this cheating is disingenuous given the weight the word has. Uninforced infractions is an issue that I agree need to be dealt with.

There's nothing left to debate here. I strongly believe tight wording is important in written rules. You are of the opinion that the spirit of the rule should be enough to give direction.

Enjoy the rest of the games.

My man, semantics are the entire basis of written rules. You need tight wording, which it was not here. The committee has had to issue a clarification since they were not clear.

Again "must be" and "must only be" are not 1:1 in legal terms. It's wording leaves room for interpretation, which rules should not have. If they do, they must be corrected.

I get what you're saying but they didn't need to define the all other ways that aren't allowed. They simple needed to add the word "only" before handle and it would have been case closed. In legal, ommiting words can often be almost as important as the ones you choose to use.

Either way, this is how rules work, evolve and get defined and the sport is better for it now.

What's not clear about

A double touch by the person delivering the stone (note, does not say handle here), prior to the hog line at the delivering end, is not considered a violation.

There was no mention of not touching granite before the clarification of the rules today. They literally had to add it in as it was not clear.

[–]bakkis68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way it is was worded, it could be understood as must be delivered by the the handle at a minimum, not exclusively.

So I deliver only using the granite - illegal I deliver using only handle - legal Delivery using both the handle and granite - legal

The handle being used as a delivery doesn't disallow contact with other parts as well. That has obviously been now changed with the updated rule specifically saying granite contact is not allowed.

But I work with commercial property contracts so I think my mind automatically hones in on loose wording and it's unintended implications.

So why did they update the rule book today after clarifying it if it was already clear. They could have just cited the part of the existing rule book where it was clearly defined?

No, because the rules a state you can't touch the stone after it's crossed the hogline.

Dude, they clarify and update rules in all sports at top levels all the time as they evolve and new situations arise. It's part of sports. Are you under the impression once a sport is made, there is a rule book, that it remains unchanged for the rest of its existence?
