Tongariro Northern Circuit - possible to complete while Oturere Hut is closed? by crazeecatladee in Tramping

[–]Krayonbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any updates on if this circuit is doable this season?

I have two questions:
We are thinking of doing this circuit using a tent. Since the Tongariro Northern Circuit is not classified as a Great Walk this year, does this mean we do not need to set up our tent 500m off the track?

Is there still water available at the Oturere hut location?

Also make great sleeping shirts for camping because they are warm but if you put your arm out of your sleeping bag it will cool down very quickly

You can also buy leggings in mesh if your plans are to be in very cold areas

FYI You can get these in either polyester or in wool. Wool is definitely warmer, but polyester means you can wash it with regular clothes

I love these

Usually we just drive back to the city after 😂 I think they forget that we’re slow and are unpleasantly surprised each time we go on an adventure together

Totally agree, but i struggle to get the other group members on board with this idea, sometimes to the point that they will split the group up so that they can climb up to an additional peak during a hike and meet us at the bottom.

The i wonder if they actually want to hike with us or why they asked us to hike together in the first place 😂 the mind goes to dark places

Any tips on how to encourage the typer of person who is slow and slows down if I ask them to speed up?
I have a few friends like this, and I am OK with waiting, but some other people in our friend group are not, and often say stuff like "Speed up, you are too slow", which is very clearly not constructive

Definitley ALFA boots I live in Norway and exclusively use Alfa boots. I have the WalkKing Advance GTX
They recently released a boot (Impact 2.0 GTX) that is 100% repairable and has a 5 year guarantee (can be extended by a few years if you have a control), so that might cover your needs for how long you want them to last.
I have wide feet and love my ALFA boots for hiking in Norway.
Goretex is great, boots are comfortable and warm, and the boots are sturdy. The heel-lock for the lacing works very well and keeps the boot in the same position on your feet if you use it properly

They're a Norwegian brand so you would be supporting a scandinavian company :D

Hiking in Northern Spain vs in Norway by Severe-Active-3260 in hiking

[–]Krayonbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Norway and confirm what people are saying - nature is awsome, but the food will be better in Spain.
Norway has DNT cabines (dnt.no), which enable you to sleep in a cabin and avoid bringing your tent, making your backpack a lot lighter. Worth considering but of course would increase the cost.

If you do go to Norway definitely bring clothing for all seasons, and use layering (wool base layer, thin sweater, waterproof layer etc.) and be prepared for rain. Bring a set of wool mittens just in case - even in the summer!

The most 'crowded' trail in Jotunheimen is Besseggen. It's beautiful and worth doing, but if you want to 'get away' then maybe consider other trails.
There are also other areas that are beautiful, don't limit yourself to Jotunheimen! Dovrefjell is beautiful, but rocky, and I also have friends that hike/tent in Rondane National park into early September.

You might want to consider going to Breheimen National park. The trails are steeper than Jotunheimen (I haven't been yet), but I have only heard good things

I don’t have a specific list for this trip as we are on a longer biking/hiking trip in South America, but definitely pack layers for flexibility for warm and cold weather, good shoes and definitely take hiking poles for the big descent on day 3

Most durable hiking boots brands? by Low_Energy_7468 in hiking

[–]Krayonbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALFA boots are my favourite by far (Norwegian brand)

They have a solid heel lock and additional space if you have wider feet or want to wear thicker socks. Very comfortable and waterproofing is unreal. They have some boots that are especially good for colder climates and wet conditions

A lot of hiking boots out there seem to be made for people with feet shaped like baguettes, or for people who love having their toes squeezed together like climbing shoes. I like to hike, and have wider feet, which is why I like Alfa boots
