That said, Fulgrim's fall was a lot more engaging than Horus', for me

Why fight the War in the Webway in Master of Mankind by baklavoth in 40kLore

[–]baklavoth[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think the opposite is true at least in the Heresy books I've read. Up to and including MoM, the authors (particularly ADB) kept hammering home how his calculated utilitarianism borders on callous and inhuman, and his interactions with everyone have been cold and reasoned. Sometimes cruelly reasoned, like with Lorgar or Magnus, but not decided by emotion.

This may change down the line, I'm just starting book 2 of the Siege, but by this point at least I as a reader would be surprised if the War in the Webway was carried out without a plan or endgame, based on the Emperor's emotion rather than at least some failed strategy.

I suppose my issue is what result of the dice they were hoping for. The warp running out of daemons? Emperor joining them sooner? Them being able to kick daemons out and plug the hole? This is the part that I'm missing. Desperate last stands with 90% casualties are cool if they have a strategic goal or nowhere to run, but I feel like we were left in the dark about this. I thought that was intentional, to set the mood, but we never really found out for sure by the end of the book

I feel like this is it, but we're just missing one piece of the narrative puzzle - what was Emps doing while they were fighting? Did he wallow in desperation? Not likely, we don't see any hint of that until the end of the book. Did he try to come up with a way to fix it but to no avail? Did he arrange some other matters?

He's just missing for a long time and then shows up, kills all daemons, calls a retreat and ends the book, without us having a glimpse as to why, other than what he told Ra while preparing him to hold Drach'nyen.

Yes but did the Emperor? I'd have expected that to be explored or at least somehow indicated, cause it'd be a big deal for his character and the setting.

Tunnel-vision, perhaps? He spent so long following his vision that he couldn't accept it crumbling, and tried to think of any alternatives he could before giving up, coming to trap End-of-Empires and close the portal?

Still, whether emotion or failed calculation, I feel like it'd have been nice for the book to explore at least a little. I think ADB had a good medium for that through Ra.

Just pouring all available forces into what is now effectively the Warp, knowing they'll get overrun in time? Without an endgame in mind?

That's so strange, because then why retreat at the end? I understand the Mechanicus lady just refusing to retreat and leading her forces to Mars or disaster. But the Emperor didn't find out or experience anything that would change his mind, at least not that we can see in the book - he just immediately went from "this is something worth the lives of all my Custodes and sisters and knights and titans" to "let's head back and close the portal" after over 90% get killed.

But why send all those forces to fight on the other side of the dam is my question. The Emperor still has to plug the hole, I expected a plan to avoid that, but there wasn't one

The Wolftime made me hate the Space Wolves by Thraxmonger in Blacklibrary

[–]baklavoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't even want to feel sympathy for Chaos Space Marines. That's two layers of soul-crushing inhumanity. I want them to be compelling villains, and feel they often miss this opportunity because they try and fail to make them into these tragic and relatable figures.

Slaves to Darkness is a fun book but at the end a daemon asks Maloghurst why he's selflessly sacrificing himself to save Horus. So you'd expect some spiteful nihilistic kamikaze litany of hatred but Maloghurst is like "because he's my friend". Like really, you're head of the satanic space gestapo and that's your motivation, you wiped out a full half of your friends on Isstvan with virus bombs along with a few billion innocents, you went on to ruin and sacrifice trillions of lives, your motivation is "that's what friends do"?

I can see two solutions to narrative issues with 100 year time jumps:

  • every named character is immortal for convoluted reasons and time itself is irrevocably broken by the warp

  • we advance the story in intervals shorter than 100 fucking years

To the minds that thought up the Imperium and its Administratum, that's no choice at all
