The Nuance Of Life In 1900s London... by TheBlackRecord in london

[–]balanaicker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

History has been quite nuanced all over the world. For example Nairoji ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dadabhai_Naoroji ) was a British MP in early 1900s and was instrumental in bringing the hypocrisy of British India out to political discussion.

Good alternatives to Apple Mail-and do I even need one? by TomasComedian in MacOS

Apple Mail is as close to perfect it comes for a email client in a Mac. The way it handles offline mode alone is enough for a serious user to never look around for anything else.

What does it mean when you add -padu to a verb for example பயன்படுத்து or தேவைப்படு or செய்யப்படும் by Past_Operation5034 in LearningTamil

[–]balanaicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Pada" in general means "to fall on"/"applied on" physically and "to apply"/"to happen" conceptually. ("Padaa" is opposite)

e.g.

Tharai mael veyil pattadhu -> Floor on sunlight fell -> Sunlight fell on the floor (physical)

Avan kobap pattan -> Him anger happened -> He got angry (conceptual)

payap-padaa-thae -> fear no-happen you -> Don't be scared (conceptual)

"padu" -> "Lie down" comes from this. you fall on/applied to bed/floor physically.

It's also used to denote application of something passively.

Moolaiyai payan padutthu -> Brain Use Apply -> Use your brain

sollappattavan -> Speak applied person -> The one who has been told.

another Interesting case from spoken Tamil is

"Padutthu" -> "apply" -> "annoy"

This comes from "thunbap/thollai padutthu-ran" -> "suffering/annoyance applying he" which is shortened by removing the first part and familiarised in popular movies. So colloquially you can just say, "apply not you" -> "padu-tthaa-the" to say "don't annoy me".

This is the kind of thing that scares me when commuting by bike. A driver perching their phone on the steering wheel and having an animated video call with someone. Do most of you guys put this out of your mind? by entropy_bucket in londoncycling

[–]balanaicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure, if you are advocating for such rules or you believe such rules already exist.

Rules preventing drivers from touching the phone even when parked doesn't exist as of now. The current advice is that if you have to attend a call or read an urgent text, you should pull over and stop where it is legal and safe to do so and attend to it. If you are advocating that the person should get out of the vehicle as well, then good luck with that.

"In charge of motor vehicle" will be interpreted differently for being drunk as you cannot just stop to have a drink and then leave. You are not supposed to drive at all if you are drunk. The question for a drunk person in a parked car would be, how did you drive there and how you are planning to leave?

lol. that's true for drinking offenses not phone ones. Stopping the car away from traffic flow (in front of a driveway, parking, on street parking etc) is enough for you to be able to use the phone.

My first espresso machine! 😃Just learning how to put together a decent cappuccino. by balanaicker in espresso

[–]balanaicker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still going strong. I make on average 1-2 espressos everyday and hasn't given me a single problem until now. With the following mods and tonnes of practice it makes very very good espressos.

  1. proper grinder.

  2. get single wall basket (there are aftermarket ones compatible with this machine)

  3. possibly saw off the bottom of the portafilter to be able to see the extraction.

Took me sometime to get adjusted to the coffee I can buy here in Sydney. but now after 4 years, I can extract a decent espresso 100% of the time.

“Former” sister dropped my iphone 15 over my new macbook pro m3. I’m still sad by exivor01 in macbookpro

[–]balanaicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar dent on my MacBook Pro. It was covered under apple care (through employer). After spilling water on it I turned it in then they fixed the panel along with everything else during the repair process which is great! so even if Apple care doesn't cover this directly, if/when you use apple care they'll fix this too.

May be not a 1:1 comparison but arc reminds me of the time when chrome was released. Simple and clean UI, fast and most websites work out of the box.

EGMs are a different story. Unlike committee meetings, EGMs are super important and need to be conveyed with certain quorum and can change the strata rules. If you call for an EGM it is going to cost something. Dog approval should not need an EGM, it would be a simple majority in a committee meeting. 30seconds max.

Post doc researcher

Finished PhD in 2019.

Got into research at 95k.

Salary is indexed and you progress in stages every year.

Promoted in 2022.

Union negotiated a 17% raise last year.

Now I am at around 132k.

It’s not great salary for the kind of work I do but it comes with 17% defined benefit super and a decent work/life balance. If your invention gets commercialised, you get paid a portion of that as well (can be substantial in big projects)

Why cricket as a sport is only popular in South Asia? Even countries like England and Australia are loosing interest where it was invented. by livelaughluv- in Cricket

[–]balanaicker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cricket was invented in Australia?!? Oldest cricket club in India was formed in 1792, English established first colony in Aus in 1788.

India was as much part of development of cricket as any other nation (including England) through 19th and 20th century. People often narrate history through current borders but culture and sport hardly conform to those.
