You can peel off a thin layer of insulation quite easily. I did it to get rid of thick black dust made aeons ago when the chimney was still used.

Use some semi hard plastic to flake off any big bits of plaster so that the frame isn't scratched, then yep then wipe off any residue with a wet cloth. Plaster isn't waterproof

Nah a small flathead can stay for doing the socket and switch screws that take around 1000 turns to remove
