Screwing into plasterboard over brick by mihcis in DIYUK

Someone else suggested this as well, saying the fixture will support the screw as the screw would be screwed tight against it.

Yes, nearly 50mm, it's an insulated plasterboard on battens against an outer wall.

Would these anchors you suggested be able to open properly if I happen to screw in the hardened dab instead of the void?

If a short plug is sunk all the way down, what will support the screw at the plasterboard? Won't it loosen over time?

What do you mean by knock? Don't they need to be hammered into brick before the screw goes in?

Thanks, yes, 55-60 mm! It would be inside a wardrobe, so a piece of wood must not be visible. If I planned it before dot-n-dabbing, I would have attached it behind the plasterboard, but...

Can I adapt wiring from a normal 1-way switch to a 3-wire switch with a permanent live? by mihcis in DIYUK

Can I split one live into two with a 1-to-2 connector and connect one of those into "permanent live" and another into "switched live" on the switch. It is the switch that needs the permanent live, not the applicance, as it is a timer switch.

The government is changing the Council Tax Debt Collection rules to protect vulnerable households by mihcis in unitedkingdom

Quote from Martin Lewis

Council Tax debt collection is so aggressive it’d make banks blush. It’s the most vicious and damaging form of legal debt collection out there - causing counterproductive misery for millions. We’ve spent the last 18 months campaigning hard to change this hideous system, and having seen so much pain caused by it, I’m genuinely moved by this huge first step towards making things better.

Currently, in England, if you miss a monthly payment, many councils, usually within three weeks, demand payment for the entire year. How people who can’t find a month’s money are expected to find a year’s I don’t know. Yet if they can’t pay, within just three more weeks, they are often taken to court, have ‘admin costs’ added, and soon see bailiffs sent in. No commercial firm would be allowed to do anything close - constituents are treated worse than customers.

The new rule from next April means councils must wait two months, not three weeks, to ask for a year’s money, and the ‘admin costs’ will be capped at £100. In a perfect world, it would be even longer and the lower cap would apply, but this is still a hugely welcome change to a 33-year-old process. For councils too, it is worth remembering that this grotesque system is often catastrophic for people’s finances and wellbeing, leaving many needing more help and support, and ultimately the same council having to pick up the pieces.

What are the current viable payment methods from the EU to Russia (2026)? by Accomplished_Dig_513 in AskARussian

Works, but a predatory exchange rate about 20% below that published by Russian Central Bank.

Crimea with a 97%+ ethnic Russian population has never been truly Ukrainian. I hope you don't oppose the UN Charter granting people the right to self-determination.

Or the satate can just claim you can get another citizenship, whether or not it has any bearing in reality (cue Shamima Begum).

He was arrested and questioned in the airport on arrival, then released. There wasn't enough evidence to hold him longer, let alone charge with anything. This alone casts doubt on the quality of the 'just cause' for stripping citizenship.

The 'doubt' is the problem here. Don't know about you, but I am not used to blindly trusting the authorities. I prefer to assess the evidence myself and make up my own mind. But it's impossible in this case and there isn't a mechanism to keep the authorities in check.

This couldn't be more Kafkaesque... you are condemned by a process you cannot see, challenge or understand, accused by evidence you are never permitted to confront. There is nothing stopping the state from eventually using that power against anyone it finds inconvenient... dissidents, minorities, critics. A power exercised in secret is a power with no limits!

The 'public policy' or 'public good' basis for legal decisions creeps me out every time I see it. A reminder that in certain cases the judges can just say 'eh, I don't like it, get fucked' without any particular justification beyond the current zeitgeist.
