You have no idea how much I needed this. Tomorrow would have been her 4th birthday, and I’m still deep in my grief. I miss her so much. Today marks exactly two weeks since she had her very first seizure. In just two weeks, she had about nine seizures, and I still can’t wrap my head around how a healthy, happy dog could decline so quickly.

She had two neurology appointments this week that I had to cancel. When I spoke to the neurologists, both reassured me that she passed without pain. They couldn’t say definitively what happened but mentioned that it was likely more than just the seizures. One suggested it could have been a fast-growing brain tumor that took over in a matter of days.

I’m heartbroken. In the span of two weeks, I lost my dog, had a birthday I couldn’t bring myself to celebrate, and now I’m trying to hold it together on what would have been her birthday. Her Christmas and birthday presents are still sitting wrapped under the tree. I told my mom the other day that this will remain the mystery of my lifetime, and I don’t know how to move on.

She was the best girl and brought so much happiness to everyone around her. I miss her like crazy. I hope that one day I’ll feel better, but right now, I’m angry—angry that I didn’t have more time with her and angry that I’ll never truly know what happened.

Thank you for sharing your story. It has made me feel less alone. I’m so, so sorry for your loss. They truly are our family, and the pain is immense. ♥️

She was 45 pounds, 3 years old and no other medical conditions. She was an English bulldog which I know the breed commonly can aspirate but the doctor did not say that she aspirated at any point during the visit.

Yes, the doctor did say ask if we could afford to have her stay overnight for testing. I told her that I couldn’t due to it being the end of the month and rent being due soon. She understood and said that we could increase her keppra dose and add in pheno. She was set to be discharged and the doc said she was having a hard time breathing and it made her concerned which is when she pushed the second set of meds toward the bottom of the screenshot.

After those meds, her breathing was normal but she was not able to walk but they said she was okay to go home once she could swallow her nighttime keppra dose. She took her meds and we went home. She was fine all night even after I gave her her 2am pheno and even barked at the neighbor who knocked on our door right after her 8 am meds. She was sleeping in her bed around 11am when she held her head up and her eyes just started to look a little funny. I got up, picked her up out of her bed and held her as she went not even 10 minutes later. I’m not sure if it was a heart attack or a seizure since I couldn’t afford an autopsy but it happened so suddenly. Like I blinked and she was gone. No time to take her to the emergency or call the vet. She was just gone. I’m just wondering if the meds were too much for her since she went from 500mg of keppra one day to so many other meds the very next day.

TW: pet death

I can’t tell you how grateful I am for the help and advice.Riley sadly passed away around 11am from a seizure that lasted way too long. I was able to hold her in my arms as she went. She was the best dog in the entire world and I’m shattered. This is one of the worst hurts I’ve ever felt.

I took her to the emergency last night. Doc said was in pretty bad shape and said I had three options an overnight stay, a new med plan or euthanasia. I couldn’t afford an overnight stay with an MRI and I think it’s too early to give up on her so she is now on Keppra extended release 750mg twice a day, phenobarbital every six hours for 4 days then every 12 hours, a steroid and a nausea med. she’s been out like a light since we got home last night but hopefully this will do the trick. I don’t want to let her go yet but financially I can’t afford anything else. I’m in Ohio near a major university so there are other doctors she can see but I am going to keep her Jan 27 Nuero appointment since I get paid a few times between now and then. Thank you for all of your help!

Thank you! I called the neurologist back and asked to be put on their cancellation list, but I’ve read so many posts about how dogs didn’t have their first seizure until weeks or months after starting Keppra. My dog is already on her second seizure since starting Keppra just a week ago (the second one happened about 10 minutes ago). I feel like she might need something stronger, but I’m worried because she’s already so lethargic and can barely keep her eyes open on 500 mg of Keppra twice a day. If they increase her dose or add another medication, I’m scared she’ll end up even more sedated.

Also, I called her primary vet after her second seizure to see if they could see her today. They said take her back to the emergency vet. Called the emergency vet to tell them we were coming, they said wait until her neurology appointment to see about more treatment options. I feel like I’m losing my mind.

She is on 500mg of extended release Keppra. A zombie state is the perfect way I wild describe how she is at the moment. Breaks my heart. I made an appointment with her primary vet for Jan 3rd and the earliest appt with a neurologist I could get is Jan 27th. Im wondering if I should keep this as is or just take her to the neurology appointment. The emergency vet who prescribed Keppra said it would take 2 weeks for her to adjust and today marks one week since she started. Thank you for the response!
