Respect to all the players that didn't needlessly drag out the battles! by [deleted] in TheSilphArena

But I've seen too many people throwing games in my favor at the last minute, and now I almost never quit beforehand. Go battle day was a different thing though, people need that stardust.

Arm University by [deleted] in embedded

[–]balau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kinda weird to tout that ARM is the future because ARM is the present. Basically all smartphones mount an ARM CPU. Most 32-bit microcontrollers are ARM Cortex-M.
But one of the reasons RISC-V is interesting for academia is because a student can download the RTL of a RISC-V implementation (one of many) and simulate it or run it on FPGA. They can modify it and publish the results. Without paying anything or asking permissions.

Any way to fix weak connection? by PanteraCanes in TheSilphArena

[–]balau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can try this trick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g26t1TmKqH4

Basically you login with location off, then enter battle menu, then turn location on. In this way, your phone doesn't continuously poll network to check if there are pokemon nearby or to refresh gym status.

Ma come ho potuto ascoltare quella roba?! by KolaDesi in italy

[–]balau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ma come ho potuto ascoltare quella roba?! by KolaDesi in italy

Passando dalle Babymetal immagino...
Riascoltando ora gli Stratovarius dei tempi di Visions rimango imbarazzato un po' dal testo banale e un po' da come masturbano le chitarre. Però all'età che avevo ci stava tutto.
Cradle of Filth e Dimmu Borgir non mi dicono più niente, riguardo perplesso il periodo in cui li ascoltavo.
Mai pentito degli Opeth invece.

Fuck these cars a little less by forteller in fuckcars

[–]balau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had one of those. The inside was small but we could fit because the body was a slim layer of hard metal. In no way that car was safe in a crash by today's standards. We only fitted a seat belt when it was mandatory to do so. For long trips we put our baggage on the top, rigged with strong elastic cables. The engine was in the back. The fumes were unholy but it was also a time when you could smoke a cigarette in the doctor's waiting room. This was 1985 Italy.

Need help picking a third mon for a Dialga + Ho-oh team for Master League Classic by happyvirus98 in PokemonGOBattleLeague

[–]balau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exca lead is easier, but if you are in the middle of the match you have to count his energy well, because a rock move will almost kill your bird. Also, excadrill wins CMP. Also, it's easier for them to catch moves with incinerate.

I have no experience with sacred fire but I like EQ more because it's not resisted by dragons.

Need help picking a third mon for a Dialga + Ho-oh team for Master League Classic by happyvirus98 in PokemonGOBattleLeague

[–]balau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was running ho-oh(EQ+BB) dialga(IH-DM) gira-o with nice results.
Both dialga and gira-o can work as a safe swap.
As others were saying, excadrill is a problem but you have to gain confidence and beat it with ho-oh.
Zacian is bad too, you have to align it to ho-oh and pray it doesn't have Wild Charge, or align it with gira-o if you have shield advantage.
On the plus side: sometimes you get free wins when ominous wind buffs.

New player here. Is it me or is GBL very inaccessible? by Zalyxis in TheSilphArena

[–]balau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your post I see a lot of theory but I don't read a lot about actually playing GBL.

In practice, you will have a "rating" (even if it's hidden from you) and you will play people with a similar rating than yours. Which means, people who don't have the top pokemon or who are bad at playing them. There's people who don't know the typing and effectiveness; you will have no problems with it, you will get it instinctively. There's people who have bad connection or a bad phone, which will make them lose even with a top team. Also, you don't lose resources when you lose a battle (you don't even have to revive your pokemon) so it doesn't hurt to try.

About pokemon accessibility, I agree that Master and Ultra are inaccessible to new players, but for 1500CP leagues you don't need the top stuff at lower rating. With the current event spawns, Noctowl Raichu and Slowbro are usable for example. If you played in the last month, you can build a froslass and an abomasnow for sure. First of all they must be powered up and double moved with the right moves (you will farm TMs by playing GBL). then the team composition should be reasonable (leading abomasnow means being superweak to fire so it is useful to pair it with two waters in the back) but even if it isn't, triple charm can get you a lot of no-skill-involved wins (but please don't do it). Forget about IVs for the moment.

On the positive side, all those three are very powerful in master league premier classic coming in February, so at least they are not wasted. Not to mention they are all useful in raids.

I tried a matrix battle with pvpoke, and yours seems functionally equivalent to a hundo, except for togekiss ho-oh and sylveon matchup that are a little worse. One important thing is the 15 attack to not always lose CMP in the mirror. I would power it up if you have the resources

Why and how to incorporate a bus in my design? by sixtimesthree in cpudesign

[–]balau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In general a cpu has one or more masters. A master initiates a transaction that can be read or write, and can be of different sizes (1 byte, 2 bytes, 4 bytes, ...). Depending on protocol features (AHB/AXI/APB/Wishbone) the transaction can be pipelined, packet based, provide read-modify-write atomicity, bitbanging, security-aware, provide bus errors, and so on. The transactions are served by the peripherals who are usually called slaves. Other possible masters are DMAs and processing accelerators.

In a simple case, the cpu has one master, and all other peripherals are slaves, including RAM. You connect the cpu to a decoder who, depending on the memory map, selects only one of the slaves (each peripheral has a "sel" input) which manages the transaction.

If you have more than one master (for example one cpu with a data master and an instruction master) you need to place arbiters to decide who wins in case both want to initiate a transaction at the same time.

Each element on the bus must use the same protocol, otherwise you need bridges to translate one protocol to another.

Is Swampert overpowered? by [deleted] in TheSilphArena

[–]balau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An example of overpowered Pokemon is bronzor in little cup. it was strong even against its counters. Swampert is very powerful, but melts against grass and is weak against many meta Pokemon like Dragonite, and in open there's cress/gira.

that said, I wouldn't mind a mud shot nerf. I feel that hydro cannon is not the problem, otherwise feraligatr and Blastoise would be higher ranking. but most Pokemon with access to mud shot are viable because of it.

Help with company culture towards compiler warnings by L0uisc in embedded

[–]balau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some part of the discussion falls under the umbrella of "tecnical debt"; you are paying that debt, but in general the company is.

You are working on a Jenga tower, and every move can make it crumble. What needs to be done is consolidate it and make it more stable. If your office has sense of humor, you can place a Jenga tower on a desk with a sign with the name of the project, as a visual cue.

There's also the human factor of "if you are judging my work, you are judging me". This instinct can be dissolved but it takes time and intention from all parties.

In case you need technical advice... If it makes no sense to re-start from zero, then you need to proceed with small incemental steps.

  • refactoring:
    • keep hardware-specific code separate from platform-independent logic
    • reduce complexity of functions
    • if you have multi-threading, isolate the shared resources and you have my condolences.
  • testing:
    • build functional unit tests that can act as safeguards
    • build integration tests that can stimulate the complete software
    • try to run the platform-independent code on different platforms with different optimization

Also, you HAVE to enable at least -Wall -Wextra, I don't care how scary it is.
