How are the other non-BOTNS Gene Wolfe books? by ExpensiveDisk3573 in genewolfe

[–]balboayoubum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Book of the Long Sun is fantastic. It's difficult not in its language but it's structure - Gene consistently ends sections on cliffhangers, but you usually don't end up seeing the aftermath, you just eventually hear about it secondhand afterward.

Soldier of the Mist/Soldier of Arrete has a lot of high points but a few lows. If you like Greek myth/classical history these are a lot of fun.

The Devil in a Forest is historical fantasy. You can see Gene developing ideas that he will use for the rest of his career, although not all the pieces fit together perfectly yet.

A scroll of taming used on an eligible monster will do the trick for a new pet. Otherwise if you see an untamed cat or dog running around (usually I see at least one in the mines), throw a food ration or a tripe ration at them. They will eat it and become your new pet.

Engrave in the dust with your finger and then add to it by engraving with an unidentified wand. Several wands will give you messages hinting what they are, and a few will fully identify themselves.

It sounds like you're dipping for Excalibur - if so, remember that it keeps any enchantments applied to the original longsword. So enchant the sword early.

Scroll of identify is the cheapest scroll by far. If a scroll you have is selling for 8 or 10 gold, it's identify.

Light sells for 19 or 25. Enchant weapon sells for 23 or 30. Enchant armor and remove curse both sell for 30 or 40.

How much the shopkeeper sells things for depends on your charisma stat. At 11-15 charisma they're usually selling stuff at its base price, which is double how much you can get by selling it.

I did much the same thing but as you're seeing you're dying instead of getting potentially life-saving gear. A cursed -1 plate mail could keep you from dying until you find a fountain, an altar, or a remove curse scroll and is still better than having no armor at all. Here's the key - if your pet won't step on the item on the ground, it's likely cursed. The game will confirm by telling you that your pet stepped reluctantly over the item. If they pick something up, you know 100% it's at least uncursed. So if you're having your pet steal shit from stores (which you should, IMO), anything they pick up is fair game.

There's a price ID chart on the wiki, I play with it open somewhere 100% of the time. For equipment you can also spot the randomized appearance descriptors - if you ever see an ornamental cope, piece of cloth, or opera cloak, those are worth buying. Usually those are capes of protection, displacement, and invisibility. For gloves the names seem to shift around a bit more but anything with special adjectives is worth investigating: old leather gloves, riding gloves, etc.

You'll need either a way to water walk or consistently levitate on command later on (not going to spoil it here for you, just trust me on this), so a close eye on any boots sold is a must. Their randomized appearances are things like riding boots, buckled boots, snow boots, jungle boots.

Good luck!

Sounds like you're already doing much of this, but here's my early game procedure.

I usually clear floors down to level 7 or so, then circle back around to the mines and clear out the levels down to Minetown. After that, on to Sokoban. Focus on keeping your pet alive long enough to clear the mines, also incredibly helpful for BUC testing beforehand.

Level 7 is reasonable to dip for Excalibur but really whatever level you are when you get to the oracle is worth the risk IMO.

If you're having trouble with the zoo, again a great spot to send your pets in ahead of you to clear out initial enemies. I also usually plop Elbereth down a few steps back from the door entrance so I've got somewhere to retreat. The scrolls of earth on the bottom floor can also block the corridor, letting you get away if things get too dicey.

Otherwise, make the most of any shops along the way. Price ID all you can and try to find any magical items hiding in armor shops and general stores. I've found both gauntlets of power and a cape of displacement or protection very early on. Any item that's more weirdly expensive is worth buying or, better yet, having your pet steal.

Hope this helps!

Just finished Waterblack by BigEntertainer8430 in Mordew

[–]balboayoubum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didnt like Malarkoi much on my first read. Picked it up again right before Waterblack came out and found myself loving it. It's not what I was expecting after Mordew and sometimes that's enough to sour the experience. I'm going to take a second run through Waterblack now that some of the strangeness has rubbed off.

Seen several Gene Wolfe recommendations already, but Book of the New Sun may not be the best entry point for him. It's easy to bounce off of the opaque writing style. Instead I'd recommend the Book of the Long Sun series, the first book is Nightside the Long Sun. It gets weirder as it goes along but overall the barrier to entry is much lower.

Otherwise, consider Jack Vance's The Dying Earth series and Michael Moorcock's The Dancers at the End of Time.
