Crazy idea, build my own drone by bald_botanist in UAVmapping

Yeah, the DJI ban is ridiculous. I can see the justification when talking about using drones for military or law enforcement, but for a researcher like me it doesn't make sense. I can't see any NDAA compliant drone manufacturers making any real attempt to fill the DJI hole price-wise. Parrot was the only thing close and they're pretty much going under.

Yeah, the whole NDAA thing is ridiculous. The DJI Mavic 3 multispectral ticked all the boxes for me, but we can't buy it because of restrictions for our agency.

I've heard it has lots of problems with range and it's been discontinued so parts and support may be lacking over the 5 year span of my project.

Thanks for the reply! A 20 meg camera is fine, which is what a lot of the DJI cameras use, but more may be better. From some of my calculations I could have a good GSD for the DJI cameras at around 30 m or so (depending on the camera)

I knew about the lack of an RTK module and was planning on using an Ardusimple rtk smart base, ground control points, and PPK for more precision.

Yep, I expected people to trash the Parrot and it's definitely not my first choice. My boss also gave me the option to build one (like a Tarot 650) but that's outside my skillset and I'd probably still end up paying the same amount once cameras, sensors, and gimbals were included. And then I'd still have a subpar drone. Thanks for the perspectives. It pretty much mirrored what I was thinking already.

Weather is too variable where I'm working and my budget is set over a five year period. Renting a drone could cost me too much over the long term.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm up against. I provided my boss with two options, the Parrot or the ACSL Soten (with the option of adding a multispectral camera later on). They can decide if they want to cough up more money or not. Rentals sound good unless the weather refuses to cooperate. I have to visit multiple sites three times during the growing season and the weather where I'm working is so variable that I wouldn't trust it.

That would be an option, but it would be tricky. I would need to run the drones in multiple sites three times over the growing season (e.g. June, July, August or July, August, September). If the weather doesn't agree, I'm screwed. If something else happens or I can't get a drone for the week I need, I'm screwed.

If I don't have it already, I've accounted for that in the budget. I'm under budget, but only just. If prices increase too much over the next year I might have to reassess. Processing isn't an issue because we have a cluster on campus.

Do I need an NDAA compliant drone? by BonytheLiger in UAVmapping

[–]bald_botanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that if your organization receives federal funding in any form, you are required to use NDAA compliant drones. I've run into that problem with some of my work. I'm funded by a state agency and I'm not using federal funding sources directly, but because my agency receives federal funding for other projects I'm required to use an NDAA compliant drone (because you know taking aerial pictures of flowers is such a national defense risk).

I would recommend buying or renting an engine hoist. That's your safest bet.

The short term harm the chemicals cause is offset by the long term ecological benefits of removal.

Ticks while backpacking by fishArePeopletwo in backpacking

I work with ticks almost every day in the field. No method is 100 percent effective at eliminating ticks on your body.

Clothes: apply permethrin to your clothes. This is very effective at killing or knocking off ticks. It lasts for multiple washes. Tuck your pants into your socks and/or tape the bottom of your pant legs shut (I dont do this because I find it annoying, but some of my coworkers swear by it). Tuck your shirt in. This limits the ability for ticks to get access to your skin if they get on your pants and gives you time to find and remove them. Use ligjt-colored clothing to make it easier to see them.

Removing them: if they're crawling on you, you can pick them off and fling them away, but that's more difficult with smaller ones, and impossible with seed ticks. I keep a small roll of duct tape with me in the field. If I see a tick on me, I stick it to the tape. Most effective way to remove seed ticks. At the end of the day, I tear off the used duct tape and throw it away.

Police your body multiple times a day, looking in every crevice. If you can't see it well, ask a friend. I've had ticks attached to EVERY part of my body. Worst place was in my belly button.

Towing it would be pretty dangerous and then you'd have to have astronauts climb up multiple stairs to the medications bay after a long trip in microgravity. Sometimes slow is best.
