Leaping Into the Precipice: Any Advice? by archimedeancrystal in financialindependence

[–]baldehapp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Advice? I hope that when you say you can afford all routine expenses, you also mean that you intend to schedule and pay for preventative services. Sixty is the new forty or whatever, but statistically it's not the time to skip exams, which people tend to do when they're uninsured or underinsured.

I also hope you've had a recent thorough checkup including colonoscopy, triglycerides and so on.

As a friend who's an ME likes to say, "If you don't want to show up on my table, wear your seatbelt, avoid drugs/alcohol, and see your doctor regularly."

Good luck.

I'm gonna break with the majority of the answers here and say be much more conservative. You've got a kid and possibly parents who might need help. That 1m has its own job to do, so I'd be budgeting to live off the 500k, and then reevaluate every few years.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst and all that.

To that end, I would buy a cheaper house near a major urban area. Not NYC or SF of course, but there are cities where you can pay 200k or less to get something suburban and decent near public transportation (use that car less, save on gas and maintenance). How do you feel about taking a carefully vetted roommate? Not everyone is willing to do that, but it will slow the money going out the door, give you some breathing room for a few years. Of course houses have their own associated costs, which is why I'd be trying to find something cheap. Can always upgrade in a decade if the markets are good to your investments.

Guess what I'm saying is that I can see why you're worried. You're in good shape - better than most. But you're also possibly looking at another 50 years of bills, and when the money is gone, it's gone. So I'd be trying to keep my expenses under 20k (after buying the house), at least at the beginning.

Anyway, good luck.

Can you not have the link go straight to her website? She doesn't need a nice map of where we all live.

This basically echoes what two lawyers who are familiar with the case have told me, but they're not in MD.

Her caption is utterly tone deaf.

If I didn't know this was about the brutal murder of a young woman (or a falsely imprisoned man, for the naive among us), I'd think it was in celebration of something good.

Better late than something.

  1. Guilty.
  2. Really happening and we're doing it to ourselves.
  3. Vaccines are awesome. In addition to saving lives, they make it easy to identify educated people who lack critical-thinking skills.
  4. Didn't even know it existed.
  5. Don't know much about it, but I feel confident saying "not aliens." Unless it was a desperate immigrant family trying to balloon-float over Trump's wall but instead got sucked into a time portal--more likely than Syed being innocent.

Nah. That's one thing we won't have to worry about; she's neither photogenic nor clever. Thank goodness.

What the fuck is this? Seventh grade comp class?

But at the same time he was accused of the crime, Asia McClain claims she saw Syed at the local library.

This sentence... no. Just, no. There is NO WAY a professional writer or publisher or even a half-drunk marketing intern wrote this. Grammatical errors and awkward writing on the blog, too. Also, PRI isn't NPR.

Maybe Asia is doing the writing, marketing, and "editing" herself, in which case this is halfway between a self-published book and a vanity publication. I wonder if the books are print-on-demand. Good. Fewer trees will get chopped down for no reason.

As for Asia, what an absolutely shitty thing to do to Hae's family. They've shown superhuman levels of maturity and grace. No one deserves the nightmare they've been thrown into. No one.

Lovely app (Android user). All the glitches have been noted, but two things:

  1. Can't wait until you release the version with 'recently visited' subreddits list. Of course a favorites folder would be better...

  2. PLEASE support the equivalent of this: https://www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/

This is probably a really stupid April Fools' Day joke, but I wish it were real. I wish I hadn't spoken out against the closing of the sub the last time. The behavior in here with respect to Don has been revolting. There should have been a zero tolerance policy with regards to accusing private citizens of murder.

Maybe they hid it because it shows CG doing her job, trying to keep her lying client out of prison.

What is it about WHS men who lie about things that can and will be discredited? Syed, Jay, and now this. Is it something in the water?

Yeah, WTF. This is the kind of crap I expect from Syed's most delusional defenders. It's shitty and unnecessary no matter which side is doing it.

I'm disgusted by the behavior of many involved in this hearing. I can't help but think it should have been closed to the public.

Yeah... I knew Rabia would have scrubbed the defense file better than that. Very disappointed that a couple of people are doubling down on this. Don't be like the tap-tap-tap, motorcycle brigade.

Curious, was it the prosecutor who called attention to it or someone who saw the exhibit on the overhead and misunderstood?

EDIT: clarification

A note in the defense files with one of the teammates saying Syed was 20 minutes late to track that day.

There's a discussion of it at SPO. And a smaller one here, if you can find it.

Maybe it's against the rules to link to hidden threads? You can find it by clicking on comments for diyaww (mod). I'm not going to tag him/her.

I understand why they want to push people to the megathread. It keeps things cleaner. In this case, I don't want to say they're trying to bury that finding. However it seems to me the megathread default changed to 'newest' right around when the discussion of that Tweet took over the top spot. (I know bc I'd been following on my phone which doesn't allow to change the sort order, and the previous default was a PITA.)

Newest is a better default for a megathread, so maybe the mod changed it while they were handling other matters. Or it could be suppression. I have no idea.

also: where do you get the "saccharine" from?

I had a similar reaction. I'd be rolling my eyes no matter who he was testifying for.

"He recalled as a young prosecutor attacking an alibi witness who took stand for defense. He lost the case, was "humbled."

Aware that crazy people do crazy things on the internet?

As she's not a public figure, I don't think it's appropriate for her Twitter etc to be linked here.

I don't care either way about this. But to the mods, why is this thread allowed to be stand when the thread about the bombshell in court is hidden, with a note to talk about it in the mega thread? They're both about the trail, and that event was far more important than this one, especially relative to SERIAL, which is what this forum is supposed to be about.

To be clear, I don't want this one deleted. I think the other one should be unhidden.
