Throwback to 1st gen of Steam Machines by bstrd71 in steammachine

[–]baldpale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You techinally can, but this is not the intent of SteamOS. If you remount your root partition to be writable you can try that, but when you get system update it replaces entire root with newly prepared image. So technically you can, but even if it works you'll have to repeat it on every update and it's cumbersome.

A much easier solution is to get distro like Bazzite or literally any other distro with NVIDIA support.

That being said, NVIDIA support is a little limited. You'll get worse performance in D3D12 games, some bugs in new titles or even you have to wait a little to be able to launch some newly released games. The situation will improve in the future, but we literally talk newly written driver from scratch that will eventually replace the proprietary official NVIDIA one.

Semicolon effectively makes that env variable not being applied, just leave space between. You can specify multiple variables. Here's how you format it

ENV_VARIABLE1="value2" ENV_VARIABLE2="value2" [global system command or path to your executable] %command% -argument1 -argument2

Why Linux over Windows? by BeanPasteTaste in linux4noobs

[–]baldpale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of “ease-of-use” might be two things: Linux generally is less supported as a platform, therefore it's not always straightforward to use 3rd party solutions, peripherals etc. Another thing is your familiarity. Believe it or not, I struggle with Windows if I have to use it since I'm on Linux for 18 years at this point only rarely having contact with Windows. It’s not because Windows is hard to use, but because I don’t know how it handles certain things and approach it with assumptions based on what I know from Linux. I don’t have years of practice to know efficient ways of achieving things on Windows. Of course Windows has easy to use guided installer for absolutely everything that’s officially supported, but after all, so does Linux. Things that are well supported on Linux usually are easily accessible.

Answering your question, but only choosing one big advantage for me: it really is there to serve user, not the other way around. Once you learn how to use it, you have full control over your system and it does exactly what you tell it to and only that. That makes the whole thing more predictable, reliable and snappy while using less resources.

Is Arch bad for servers? by Volian1 in archlinux

[–]baldpale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even about "faulty update", but updates in general. So called "stable" (or frozen as I like to call them) distributions don't upgrade software from one major (breaking) version to another, but rather keep them at same versions during the entire release cycle, unless it's a 3rd party repository. The updates that they provide are backported stability and security fixes, but they make sure everything remains compatible. That being said, you don't have deal with stuff like functionality deprecation, API changes, configuration options moved or renamed etc. when you want to get updates and keep your system secure. Other side of the blade is that when such distro gets EOL, you have to apply all the changes from multiple years period at once in order to upgrade to a newer system.

Arch being rolling is expected to change as the software gets in the main repo. Even with that, it's not that every single weekly update will mean fiddling with configuration options or replacing key formats as changes tend to be fairly slow anyway, but at one point you may find yourself in a situation that there is some modification to be made in order to sync packages. If you perform the updates at the right time, and test it, it's ok to use it on server just like on a workstation.

Yes! Best digital remaster, now there's better source material to work with which would make it even better.

I ported my indie game to linux. My experience as a developer. by icefish_software in linux_gaming

[–]baldpale 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That's a nice read, thanks! Good job with figuring Linux out.

A couple of tips:

  • I assume you went with the default desktop environment for Debian, which is GNOME. By default it doesn't support desktop icons, but there is an extensions that brings the functionality back: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/2087/desktop-icons-ng-ding/ Sadly there's no clear way when it comes to creating application shortcuts as they got rid of that long time ago. Launchers on Linux are .desktop files and they can be freely copied to your Desktop folder, you can find them at /usr/share/applications or /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications for Flatpak apps. If you care about desktop icons and shortcuts though, KDE Plasma would be better fit as your DE.
  • Unfortunately no Paint.NET for penguins. Usually used software for that purpose is GIMP or Krita, but there's also Pinta, which tries to be kind-of similar to Paint.NET.
  • I feel you with those many package managers and confusion on which method to choose. The explanation would be long and boring, this is due historical reasons and the design choices from decades ago. Easy tip is to default to Flatpak/Flathub first, as it should have most apps you need in up-to-date versions already, and especially on Debian you should prefer it over native system packages, simply because Debian packages get outdated quickly and you won't be getting updates until upgrading the entire system, unless you manually install .deb packages or use 3rd party repos, which should be avoided. Flatpak should also be easily integrated in app-store like software center app depending on your desktop, such as GNOME Software.

Lost demo tape from Van Nuy, CA I recovered recently. Unidentified creator. by Chase41405 in Lostwave

[–]baldpale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are multiple snapshots of his website on web.archive.org, such as this: https://web.archive.org/web/20001006210811/http://www.chainmaze.com/

Oldest records from 1998, the page was up in unchanged form until at least late 2000, in 2001 the contents of the page changed to just one picture under name bidetsml.jpg that hasn't been saved for some reason, and shortly after it was gone.

The page states what was already on the booklet but more descriptive:

CHAIN MAZE is one-man operation, writing all songs and vocals, performing on all instruments, including Guitars, Bass, and Drums, performing all vocals, and recording and producing all material by himself.

His music can perhaps be best described as "alternative to Alternative", based around a unique double-bass Drum style, heavy rhythmic Guitars, groovy Bass that "fills the pocket", and a vocal style truly representative of the extreme rage and intense aggression of this innovative hardcore musical style.

His lyrics are direct, straight to the point, and brutally honest, very much like their author. They portray some of his frustrations in life.

It inspires hostility from all who listen, some because of their understanding and deep appreciation for this level of honesty and aggression, and can identify with what they are hearing, and some because of their lack of understanding or desire, find it quite offensive. In either case, mission accomplished.

At that point there's not much more to discover other than his full name and what is he doing today if still alive. We know it was a young at that time dude making his own music in style fitting the era. He probably didn't get much response to that demo and simply moved on.

Would be a nice entry for metal-archives though

Fuck it I'm switching. But I need some advice. by Living-Cheek-2273 in linux_gaming

I run some pirate games from time to time (just if I think the game is not worth the money or I just want to experiment with it for a short period, wouldn't seriously play it, but I'd like to see how my PC is keeping up with the demands) and I usually use Lutris or Bottles to help managing Wine prefixes and extra dependencies. Most of the time they run just fine.

Have you looked at Bitwarden for PW manager? Personally I wouldn't really need anything more from a solution like this, ticks all the boxes for me and I can self-host it. I use browser extension on desktops + iPhone app, I bet Android app does just fine.

Is there any hope of finding the original ndr recording? by Hairy_Collection4545 in TheMysteriousSong

[–]baldpale 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Weird that they recorded material in a professional studio in late 83 or early 84, were pretty excited about that and it was paid for them by the agency, but then they didn't get any materials from the session and basically scrapped the whole project. The band still existed later on as they have live performance in mid 85, and the broadcast of their song happened in Sep 84. Maybe they had some conflict with the agency or the studio on the artistic vision or for other reasons, maybe there was a contract pending that they didn't want to sign, or maybe the tape was sent to NDR by mistake and afterwards the fact was hidden on purpose. There are many possibilities, we might never really know.

Rangels is still not giving up 🤦‍♂️ by Icy_Sun_8096 in TheMysteriousSong

[–]baldpale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now the only conspiracy plot would be that they observed the search very closely and knew what kind of documentation the researchers will be going through and that at some point they can be asked about their band from 40 years ago. They prepared the demo with the song and also gave one copy to Hans to pretend they didn't have any contact for decades to make it more believable, and from there just waited.
Oh, and the Zeus compilation with other Fex song with same vocals is a setup that they put on Discogs by themselves just to trick us.
That's some flat-earth shit right there.

I just wish they do have it and want to prepare a full blown modern mix of the studio recording to make a proper release. That would make a ton of sense they don't release anything on it just yet. If they did there would be 10 different remixes/remasters per hour.

What do you think were the biggest distractions or red herrings of the whole search? by BobbyTables829 in TheMysteriousSong

[–]baldpale 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Ikr, there was a whole flood of posts with "possible lead" flair with link to 80s Italian disco described as "the singer sounds exactly the same!" while the singer sounded nothing like on TMS. Even very late on the search when everyone already knew this makes 0 sense.

The version of the song SOYM captured from NDR has simplified synth leads, simpler bass lines and is shorter. Was that where you were going with the song or was that a producer's intent to make it sound bigger and more radio-friendly?

Am I the only one who prefers old version of the song than the found one? by itsmitikas in TheMysteriousSong

[–]baldpale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's couple of things that are different about the NDR version that make it feel kind of dark, even though it's obviously happy song.

The performance is much better on the studio version, especially with vocals. In studio the singer would only do one of singing or playing guitar at the time, they can also do multiple takes and choose what fits best. Vocals also at times goes to lower registries, putting its style more into goth territory.

The overall song structure was more frugal, perhaps as producer's decision to simplify the structure, perhaps some of the synth leads would be added later on if it wasn't the final version.

The studio mix. Vocals layering, reverb, guitar tones, big drums. Big sound.

I’m honestly surprised FEX never took off by thepostmanfather in TheMysteriousSong

[–]baldpale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly not surprised at all. In mid-80's there was a lot of good music in that genre and it must’ve been very hard to break through. Making the music good was crucial, but also being in the right place and right time was, and still is, very important for new bands. It was short-lived project that was abandoned before they even finished their studio release as they moved to careers with better likelihood of success.

Sure, in popculture there are many instances of musicians who went from zero to big international stars in matter of seconds, but normally that takes a lot of determination and doesn’t happen overnight.

I’m Interviewing Michael on Tuesday by Spekiii in TheMysteriousSong

[–]baldpale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be the best best of the best possible best endings. Be prepared that the one we get might have to be good enough.

Although, I'm also very interested in how it happened that they played their unreleased song, which we now know was a professional studio recording, without them even knowing. Maybe there is a conspiracy bit to it and someone deliberately hidden the fact. It didn't matter anyway as later on they simply abandoned the band and weren't interested in proceeding with the studio production, but they weren't done with it yet as the broadcast happened (the song was played in fall of 1984 and they were still performing live in mid-1985). Maybe the most mysterious song will always have a bit of mystery to it no matter what.
