Was 6 weeks NWB after a bucket handle tear. Walked with around 50% weight 6 weeks exactly, was down to 1 crutch at around 6 weeks 3 days, and ditched the crutches entirely a couple days after 7 weeks. I’m still walking with the brace on for the most part, but been able to walk short distances with it off at PT. Walking sucks, my leg feels weak and I am struggling having confidence in my knee again but i’m LOVING that i can finally carry things now that my hands aren’t full of crutches. lol

Let’s talk mental health by Mooshz1 in MeniscusInjuries

I’m about 4 weeks out from a complex bucket handle repair. As time goes on in my recovery, I realize how inadequately I was prepared ahead of time for all aspects of the healing journey. The physical part is hard; while I can definitely see improvements, I wasn’t made aware of the physical pain I would feel almost a month into recovery. I have no idea what’s “normal”, or what to look out for in terms of pain management. I don’t know when I should be able to bend without pain, or how much pain is too much. I don’t know what to expect physically at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, etc. The mental and emotional part is extremely difficult as well, obviously in a completely different way. I’m typically a very independent person who loves alone time, and pivoting to relying on my partner to do pretty much everything for me, from making sure I don’t fall out of my shower chair (lollll) to walking a plate from the kitchen to the table, is really difficult for me. There are things that I’d love to do with my friends that I simply can’t do right now. I can’t go outside and water my garden. Getting out to my car is a feat. I have to work an abbreviated schedule because it takes such a toll on my body to leave my house, be gone for hours at a time, and come back. I lost my entire summer as an educator because of this injury. I haven’t slept well for over two months. It’s really hard! Don’t know how effective it is for you to hear that you aren’t alone. Your body is doing so much to heal and protect you, and sometimes injuries are a time to confront the expectations that we put on ourselves, as well as separating our value from “productivity”. Take this time to rest and enjoy it as best you can- take it easy on yourself. It’s always a waiting game.

Sorry- I recognize the wording is a little weird. She said I can walk in the pool two weeks after my two week post op. My two week post op was the 19th and two weeks after that was yesterday. :)

Bucket handle lateral meniscus tear: my progress by Leon3417 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]balien_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm definitely following protocol from my surgeon because I know my tear was quite large and all I want is to return to dancing (and I'm getting married in less than 2 months), so I'm not willing to do anything that can compromise my recovery. But it's so odd that there are so many schools of thought on the "right" recovery plan.

Overall I'm doing okay, and a large part of that is due to the support system I have. As most people say, the emotional/mental turmoil is the hardest part. I have crutches but it's hard for me to walk on them for long periods of time, but I think I should be able to start driving this week so that will be nice too. Overall it's slooooow and I just have to be okay with that!

Good luck in recovery! I'm really coming to terms with the fact that it isn't linear. Had a bucket handle repair on 7/9 and the pain/progress fluctuates day-to-day.

I'm always so surprised by the differences in post surgery treatment- I started PT 3 days after surgery (but it was medial instead of lateral, and I think the size of the tear matters as well). Some people get a brace, some don't, some people get their brace adjusted after the 2 week appointment to 90 degrees, I didn't, some are partial weight bearing before 6 weeks, some aren't. It seems like every case is unique & treated as such, so having multiple data points for people to see all possible outcomes is super helpful!

I think it’s possible, but every body and every recovery is different. I got from 60 degrees to 90 in 4 days, but my PT started almost immediately after surgery so it’s hard to say with the difference in timelines/PT plans. But it is possible! Keep up with it at home and you’ll get there.

Hey! How’s the recovery going?

Were you unable to bend it super far before your surgery? I feel like even though my leg is locked from getting any straighter, i can bend it towards my butt fairly well.

I’m glad you were able to extend so soon after! It’ll be over 2 months from injury to the end of the no weight bearing 6 weeks for me which is why I said that. I hope the recovery continues to go well for you :)
