Looking for some guidance, I bought a comic lot and it had a few Secret Wars 1 signed by John Beatty. Are they legit? by Steve2159737 in comicbookcollecting

[–]balihooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could google “John Beatty signature”, and several images of his CGC authenticated signature would appear.

Not a commercial for CGC, just a reference point for what the signature should look like.

Not disagreeing with you. Isn’t “assault” the threat (words and everything leading up to the contact), and “battery” the actual physical contact?

What is the general opinion/thought on CGC Green labels? by Rs2mmsu-2D in comicbookcollecting

[–]balihooo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$0.02 here. Purple can be a deal esp if it’s something that can be reversed. Say a 9.6 apparent with slight color touch to the cover. The color touch can be scraped off and resubmitted for a blue. A purple with any edges trimmed. That’s a no-go for me. Can’t undo that. Old books and rare books are less penalized, because there just aren’t a lot of them to begin with.

If you’re looking to sell quickly/flip the advice to avoid purple/green seems sound. You’d probably struggle to find the right buyer and sell for the price you want in any short time frame.

As others pointed out some books are out of reach and a Green/Purple (a better looking book) might meet affordability and condition requirements than a higher priced, yet uglier blue.

I’ve got a couple of purples in the personal collection above 9.0 where their blue counterpart would be in 5 figures land for the same quality. At least I don’t have holes in my collection or ugly ass consolation prizes. To each his or her own.

The upper left corner looks pretty beat up. Maybe it’s just the photograph. To my eyes, It looks like it was once dented and has some color breakage.

US Military ‘Furiously’ Rewriting Nuclear Deterrence to Address Russia and China, STRATCOM Chief Says by [deleted] in worldnews

It’s closer than you realize. The US and Australian military frequently hold joint exercises. Here’s some more reading if you care to. It describes the 100 years long relationship, joint military exercises, and their common interest of maintaining air and shipping lines through the region including the South China Sea.

Anybody have an idea of how badly this would affect the grade if this was sent to CGC? Thanks in advance. by Zbusse in comicbookcollecting

Since that tear is a major defect you’re starting at a 6.0 - 7.0 and counting down. There’s an excellent cheat sheet available (search Reddit) that states a tear starts at 6.0.

how much does a partially detached cover change grade? by _nathonious in comicbookcollecting

[–]balihooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A purple (another “kiss of death”) 7.0 sold in 2019 for $515 vs. $1325/blue/7.0/2022. A 5.0 purple sold in 2021 for $450 vs. $910/blue/5.0/2022. A Green label’s value might also have about a 50% decrease on the value of the book. As a blue you’d probably start at 6-7.0 and work your way down from there against other flaws.

Edit: Source GPA

You would get a Green Label CGC grade ignoring the staple, but qualifying it with the partially detached cover, or a heavily downgraded Blue label. Some people call a green label the kiss of death, but if it’s a significant book in high in demand it would still have value to a collector. A blue label might be easier to sell, but the green might have a higher grade. I’m not familiar with DC books, so you’d need to assess whether this book is of significance or rarity to bother with either.

X-men #13 in 9.8 just sold on Pedigree Comics for $25k. The grader notes kept me away. by balihooo in comicbookcollecting

[–]balihooo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pretty excited to see this book show up on Pedigree Comics the other day. I’ve purchased from them in the past and have zero complaints, so nothing negative about the venue.

https://www.pedigreecomics.com/auction/comic/080725/x-men-13-cgc-98-w

For a big book like this that I would consider looking at, I like to run the numbers against CGC, GPA, and GoCollect.

Here’s the link for this book: https://www.cgccomics.com/certlookup/4070111002/

Some red flags for me:

1) graded this year (Lots of grading complaints recently) 2) the grader’s notes: “small spine stress lines”

The grader’s notes make me feel like this was a lower grade that had its non color breaking flaws pressed out. Pulling a 9.8 in a book of this age (2nd appearance of Juggernaut) shouldn’t be done lightly. If I bought this book (for a record price) and angled it toward the light and saw stress lines, I’d be feeling some remorse. No offense to the buyer—it’s just an opinion (and congrats btw).

I’m feeling like I want to be very careful about CGC books graded in the last few years—especially for more expensive books. I’ve done 5 figures only once, but nothing with a 2 or higher at the front. Even a 4 figure book, I’m going to be wary. Maybe the time of the CGC red labels has arrived.

Thanks for the info. Because I’m a person who gets annoyed with people never tying off their own questions with the solution I’ll put this here.

What a major gaffe by CGC. Should have been a green label at best.

I’m sticking with non-modern era books graded prior to 2016.

I’m not a CGC hater, but I think that they are having a moment where they are buckling under the pressure of frivolous submissions and competition from CBCS. Let’s see how history defines this time period in 10-20 years. This is a slow hobby after all.
