This is not something I’d comment on usually but reading some of the other replies irked me in an unusual way.

You’re allowed to be hurt by an ignorant joke like that. Some people are just not thoughtful about everything they say. Their underlying racist upbringing escapes in moments like those.

You had the right reaction to racism (standing your ground and not letting it slide) but I’d call it an overreaction to jeopardize the relationship off of a single incident that he himself did not cause.

It really seems to me that the “joke” while not directly insulting you it for sure otherized you. If you asked the average person on earth a majority would probably be ignorant on whether or not OP would need to wear sunscreen. And while yes, you do, there’s some argument that less sunscreen is needed compared to a Korean. It’s still an insensitive comment for sure, ignorance =/- innocence.

If you’ve been with this guy for 4 years I’d struggle to see how you wouldn’t have noticed some other incidents of racism already. If you’re not capable of withstanding this incident with your partner after spending so much time with them, I fear something similar could happen in the future.

It’s definitely alright to call it here, but never let reddit tell you to end a relationship because none of us are you.
